Read it in one night after watching this video. Excellent novella. Amazingly beautiful! Will definitely have to check out Denis Johnson's other works.

I'm 50 so I've read thousands of books at this point in my life. Train Dreams is the one book that I return to in my head over and over again. I've never read anything like it nor will I probably ever again. It is perfection of the highest order.

Oh man, I can't believe you're talking about this book! I was in the public library about a month ago and just happened to come across Denis Johnson. The language of some of his other books just immediately drew me in. I decided to "sample" his writings by starting with this short work before moving forward in his other works. MAN!! I was blown away! I felt I was being shown the interior life of the main character, and for a few nights while reading it, I became a part of this man's world! -- And it's a very short book!! Totally amazing. And your video just inspired me to give it another read. Wow! Thank you for bringing this to a bigger audience! Folks: READ THIS BOOK!

I read the book a little over a year ago based on your recommendation (as well as those of other booktubers), and I was moved as well. (Though not to the point of tears. You might do a video with subscriber poll about books that make people cry.) I was astonished how the book managed to be so epic yet so compact. And I love how American it was and how it made one reflect on unsung Americans who chased the American dream and built this country.

Awesome video! Denis Johnson is great, I think Train Dreams and Nobody Move are my personal favs of his. But it always changes.

This story is based loosely on an Idaho hermit named Dugout Dick who lost his wife and went a little crazy. You can find a youtube on him, but there's a more thorough account of his life in a book called Idaho Loners.

I read this book last year in one sitting and absolutely loved it. Might have to reread it now to get myself out of a reading slump!

Love the content, how much of James Baldwin have you read because I would love a video similar to your recent Toni Morrison on his work

I haven’t read much Baldwin yet, though I’m sure I’ll make a video or two about his work eventually

Read it after I saw William call it the best novella he's ever read in a different video and found it a slight disappointment. Jesus' Son is soo much better. The book commits the original sin of telling not showing e.g. the arguable climax of the "plot," the death of Gladys we learn about only after the fact when Granier returns home to find her gone and his land torched. And then the cheap device of the Gladys ghost explaining her supposed death. The non-linear timeline is also confusing and clunky. The writing is great, but lacks the transgressive fun of JS.
