I like that he mentions that the 1970s were much farther left than anything today, so much so that positions that are considered radical today were considered mainstream and sensible back then. That conforms to my memories, too, and was true even in the US (and even in Texas, where I lived back then). As he says, his positions stayed in place while the entire society moved to the far right beginning in the eighties. Young people today don't seem to believe that it was much more progressive back then, but it was. For instance, abortion was accepted as normal and uncontroversial in the US during the 1970s. A huge anti-abortion movement didn't come about until the 1980s under Reagan's influence. In the 1970s, opposition to abortion was considered a fringe position. How things have changed.

I think this rhetoric is what really made the inherent racism of how Israel is discussed really stand out to me. Maybe I just missed it, but I've never heard one single politician, pundit, journalist, etc. in the mainstream even so much as ponder whether Israel's flag could be seen as a symbol of racial/ethnic oppression, intimidation and violence. On the flip side, we regularly hear statements from clowns like Van Jones demonizing any symbol of Palestinian resistance.
