Well, the main theme of the finale of the First Symphony is also reminiscent of the main theme of the finale of Beethoven's Ninth, and when this resemblance was pointed out to Brahms he replied that any dunce could see that! In 1876, when the work was premiered in Vienna, it was immediately hailed as "Beethoven's Tenth"!
Erstmal vielen Dank für das Video das habe ich bisher noch nicht gesehen ich kenne einige andere mit karajans eroica alle 4 sätze sehr gut gemacht und gespielt von den berliner Philharmonikern das allegro conbrio sehr heftig und feurig und brutal dirigiert von karajan nd die anderen 3 sätze ebenso so stelle ich mir karajan und Beethoven vor alle 4 sätze in einem brutalen feurigen heftigen spielen echt sehr gut gemacht so etwas sieht man in den konzertsäulen überhaupt nicht mehr

Eine grosse Musik - aber man sehnt sich dabei etwas nach der Spielfreudigkeit in der Abbado'schen Interpretation (KKL).

Genial Beethoven. Karajan sigue siendo mi director preferido.
Marvellous live! Suddenly the mister Karayan changed the orchestra into Wiener Phil. for the Salzburg live, and it is said that they performed without any rehearsal. However, I think it is the best in all the Karaya´s performances.

懐かしい。東京文化会館の5階席、まさに天井桟敷で、観た聴いた。 もはや称賛する言葉自体が、安っぽくなってしまうほど、その燃焼度が高い空気感・音圧だった。彼らの音楽にはマンネリズムに陥る隙も無い絶妙の「間」といい、無為自然な彫琢のフレージング/アーティキュレーションの突き詰め方が存在していた。 手兵たるベルリン・フィルハーモニーの楽員メンバー全てが、その着地点の集約の為に今や臨界点に達しつつある、その哲学的とも摂れる点と線の止揚の怒涛の如く。 人間カラヤンがこの映像に在る。つい先頃1981ザルツブルグ音楽祭の最中で盟友のDr.Karl Böhmを亡くしたその諦念も垣間見える様だ。 Nostalgic. I watched and listened to it on the 5th floor of Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Hall at Ueno Tokyo, right in the ceiling. The atmosphere and sound pressure were so intense that even the words of praise were becoming cheap. Their music had exquisite “pauses” with no chance of falling into mannerisms, and a thorough idle natural carved approach to phrasing/articulation. All the members of the Berlin Philharmonic, who are the hand soldiers, are now reaching a critical point in order to consolidate their destination, and it is like a surging wave of points and lines that can be taken as philosophical. The human Karajan is in this video. You can also get a glimpse of his resignation after losing his ally Dr. Karl Böhm recently during the 1981Salzburg Festival.

This symphony is arguably the one that Karajan had in his muscle memory more than any other - inclusive of any by Beethoven - while despite all the recordings he made of it (inclusive of his 'better' early ones), this live reading comes closest, I think, to being K's 'best' and most definitive account of this great work. In this case, the sound is incredibly full and rich, with the strings in particular sounding especially resplendent and glorious. Although I've often criticised Karajan for the superficial and corporate sound that he produced as a consequence to the aural obsession he developed post the CD's introduction, this recording does indeed testify to that great art which K, in my view, so often sacrificed for the sake of achieving a 'beautiful sound'.
