25:18 Take care of the associates-> associates will take care of the guests->the guests will return, again and again. 29:21 Selection process: Hire for attitude > experience. Someone who demonstrates through their interview that they have the capacity to provide great service. 54:27 Tough, struggling and aging product = your service still has to shine, even more in a struggling product than an exceptional product. 1:00:29 Behavioral Interview question: Tell me about a time when you had a challenging interaction with a guest/team member/past job, and how you resolved that problem. Show examples where they can demonstrate friendliness, teamwork, warmth. 1:02:40 In a tough economy, the customers are much more discerning because they’re much more conscious about where their dollars are going. 1:03:03 Once you establish a certain level of service, that becomes the baseline rather than the pinnacle. Customer expectations continue to grow higher and higher, what have you done for me lately?

00:08 Greta Blash is delivering a lecture on effective project management. - Greta Blash is a certified project manager with extensive experience in executive and consulting IT roles. - The lecture will cover the basics of project management, including the phases of a project and essential competencies. - Greta will also discuss the Project Management Institute's code of ethics and how it applies to everyday life. 06:24 Project management is about addressing stakeholder expectations. - Projects can involve people from different organizational units and organizations - Effective project management requires understanding tools, techniques, and common terminology - Project managers need to assess which project management practices are appropriate for their specific project - Stakeholders are individuals or groups impacted by the project, and their concerns must be considered 18:55 The project charter is essential for formally authorizing and initiating a project. - The project charter serves as official authorization for the project and allows the project manager to spend resources. - It is essential to create the project charter early on, within the first week of the project, to clarify project objectives and requirements. - The project charter should include any compliance requirements, schedule constraints, and budget constraints. 24:25 Identify the key things that must be done, time constraints, and available budget. - We need to figure out the disconnect between the tasks and the time to complete them. - We need to determine how much money is available for the work. - Requirements for approval need to be established. - We need to identify who is responsible for approving the project. - The sponsor who will fund the project needs to be identified. 35:22 Understanding stakeholders and the project team is crucial. - Stakeholders are those impacted by or have an impact on the project - Knowing their interests, influences, and potential interdependencies is important - The project team consists of experts, sellers, and business partners - Effective communication and different roles are key within the team - Virtual teams are becoming more common and bring pros and cons - Virtual teams enable access to expertise globally but can pose challenges - Remote employees and different time zones require coordination and collaboration 40:57 Virtual teams face challenges with communication, cost, and cultural diversity. - Early morning and late night meetings are needed despite the constraints. - Virtual training is preferred due to the high cost of in-person courses. - Misunderstandings and isolation can occur without face-to-face contact. - Technology expenses impact the feasibility of virtual teams. - Time zone differences and cultural diversity add complexity to communication. 51:58 Sequential and overlapping approaches are used in project management. - Sequential approach involves completing certain tasks before moving on to the next step. - In overlapping approach, certain tasks are done simultaneously to shorten the schedule. - Adaptive life cycles, such as Agile, involve iterations and reprioritization. - Retrospective reviews are conducted to identify what worked and what can be improved. - Rolling wave and progressive elaboration are techniques for planning and performing. 57:10 When planning a project, focus on what you know and don't waste time on details that may change. - Create a timeline to outline the project - Start with the tasks you know and drill down into more detail as you progress - Allow for flexibility and adjustments as needed - Compare what was planned with what has been accomplished - Make necessary adjustments based on resources and unforeseen circumstances - Stick to the original plan and seek approval for any changes 1:07:27 Effective communication is crucial for project management. - Conciseness and clarity are key in communication. - Consider the appropriate format, timing, and impact of communication. - Understand the rules and regulations regarding communications. - Plan for approval workflows and document management. - Reflect on the project and store relevant information for future reference. 1:12:48 Giving feedback and recommendations on LinkedIn - LinkedIn recommendations are important for hiring decisions - Assessing and appraising others' work to provide helpful information - Finding something positive to say even if the job wasn't perfect - Celebrating project success without spending a lot of money - Validating completion of tasks and comparing with initial plans - Importance of administrative closure and paperwork - Reflecting on project management competencies and behaviors - Balancing constraints of cost, time, and trade-offs in projects 1:24:04 Project managers must adhere to ethical guidelines. - Ethical guidelines help organizations and individuals ensure compliance. - The code of ethics includes responsibilities, respect, fairness, and honesty. - Mandatory standards include avoiding cheating, lying, and conflicts of interest. - Project managers should know their values to make decisions. 1:29:34 Project managers need to consider the skills and morale of team members when assigning responsibilities. - Assigning responsibilities to eager team members lacking appropriate skills may impact project efficiency. - Pairing team members with complementary skills can help them learn from each other. - Organizational structure plays a role in the importance placed on formal project management skills. - Temporary project managers are commonly hired for specific projects in organizations that don't frequently undertake projects. - During an interview, it's important to understand the organization's expectations and highlight relevant skills while addressing weaknesses. 1:40:05 Being proactive and effective communication are key to project management. - Being proactive helps anticipate and handle potential problems. - Effective communication is essential for understanding team members and their needs. - Motivating and incentivizing the team are important for project success. 1:45:14 Recognition and motivation should be based on understanding individuals - Recognition of good work and admission of mistakes can lead to adjustments - Motivation should be tailored to individual preferences and needs - Emotional intelligence is key to understanding and motivating people

*Effective Communication and Collaboration in Virtual Teams* In today's world, project teams often consist of individuals in different locations working virtually. This presents both opportunities and challenges. Virtual teams enable access to expertise from diverse locations but need face-to-face communication, relying heavily on technology. Misunderstandings can arise due to language differences and the absence of visual cues. Additionally, managing time zones and cultural diversity can be complex. It's essential to ensure clear and timely communication, establish mutual trust, and identify critical resources and dependencies. Project managers must consider scheduling techniques like the critical path and critical chain, and they may adopt adaptive life cycles, such as Agile, to meet the demands of a fast-paced world. Effective communication, adaptability, and meticulous planning are crucial for success in virtual teams. *Iterative Project Management* Iterative project management involves breaking the work into smaller groups, prioritizing tasks, and adapting as needed. This approach allows for flexibility and responsiveness to changes, crucial in fields like marketing, where the landscape constantly evolves. It includes practices like retrospective reviews at the end of each phase to identify what's working well and needs improvement. Effective communication is critical, and project managers should be proactive concise, and consider the appropriate context and timing when delivering information. *Balancing Skills and Responsibilities* Project managers often face the challenge of balancing technical skills with interpersonal skills. Recognizing that only some team members may be suited for some tasks is essential. Project managers should carefully assess the situation when an eager team member wants to take responsibility for an area beyond their expertise. While encouraging enthusiasm and initiative is valuable, it's equally important to ensure the right skills are applied to the right tasks for efficient project execution. The Importance of Soft Skills in Project Management Greta emphasizes the significance of soft skills in project management. Effective communication and the ability to work with a team are highlighted as crucial skills. She also mentions the importance of understanding team members' motivations to ensure successful project management.

It's amazing that she said her weakness was procrastination which is one of the worse traits to have as a PM. But she still somehow became very successful. This goes to show that even those people who have weaknesses or traits that they think do not qualify as being a PM can be very successful regardless.

Sadly as good as this is, companies still have huge problems with Project Management . According to PWC only 2% of companies complete 100% of their IT Projects successfully. This is in the face of improved methodologies, certifications, regulations etc. and this just scratches the surface of the dysfunction of IT Project Management.
