"Why did survival horror graphics peak at PS2?" Honestly its probably because that was the last generation that wholeheartedly accepted the AA market, which is what most high end horror games aspired to be. The 360/PS3 generation by contrast was all about risk aversion, which meant of course dumbing down gameplay and following the first person shooter trend so aggressively it became risk indulgence. If a horror game sold 1-3 million copies on the PS2 it was usually happily received. If you said the same thing on the next generations consoles, it was "why isn't it selling call of duty numbers." The other problem Pongsifu, specifically regarding the graphics, was developers leaning towards Unreal Engine 3 especially as the generation aged it became easier for Japanese developers to select that over other engines(often cheaper). Problem is, that engines weaknesses (such as the "pop in" effect of all graphics loading at once) are especially bad weaknesses for the survival horror genre. It helps a game like Gears of War at the time be a visual marvel, but it ruins the tension of scenes in survival horror. Moreover, that dirty visual style of the engine did not always translate well towards character model development and the limitation of colors in UE3 at times didn't take advantage of the higher pixel performance or stability the engine offered in regards to the genre.

Capcom PS2 era shows a great reason why Linear titles are a great way to flex a console capabilties. looking at TLOU2 at PS4

When I saw the mandrake, I immediately thought of the .hack//imoq one. The plant/egg voices in that game live rent free in my mind. While I respect and like some stalker horror, it will always be less fun to me because of how annoying most are with how chases are handled. Not that that makes them bad. I just don't usually have an interest in playing them myself much. Clock Tower games and Haunting Ground are the exceptions. There will be other exceptions hopefully.
