Totally respectable ride! I struggled up exactly the same type of conditions recently, and you're carrying at least another 30kg in weight. In terms of keeping momentum, consider the traction control. The KTM offroad mode is very good, but I find its a bit sneaky in scrubbing speed when its very loose uphill so it can be hard to push the bike beyond slow speed mode in some conditions. Traction control can only manage the traction you have. Another tip is invest your traction, when do have grip, push a little harder so you can ease off where theres none. Don't be too scared when you're going in a straight line, and take necessary changes in direction nice and smooth. I'm actually switching the STR out soon, but I agree they are a good all around tire. Bit of limitation in that type of uphill, and in the mud, in my experience, but can definitely be overcome with good technique.
@motocrad
@motocrad Ай бұрын
Thank you, really appreciate all the tips & advice, I want to go back now and have another go 😉 Thankfully I haven't been through much mud, but as you've mentioned I think the STR's are better suited to dry conditions. All the best :)

@@motocrad having another go is a really good idea. Tip I was given recently around riding the same track multiple times to become more comfortable riding overall makes a lot of sense. I'd still say they're pretty good in wet conditions, just where the mud is the kind that sticks to your tire.
@robgreaves2633
@robgreaves2633 Ай бұрын
Couple of pointers - the STR's are def not up to the task - the standard Rally is better as deeper tread but would not be my choice. Momentum and your position on the bike will also make a huge difference - look through any obstacle and you need to be carrying far more speed up hills with your eyes a good 30 metres ahead all the time. By paddling you are unweighting the pegs - this then in turn takes the weight off the rear tyre and lessens grip. Be worth a day or weekend at sweet lamb adventure bike school with the guys there and they'll teach you the skills to get out on the trails safer and easier with a few bike changes. Great road that.

Hi, My 1290 Sas has now 17‘000km and it’s a lot of fun. The negative details you mentioned I have seen these, too, but after getting used to it, who really cares? The important things are the outstanding engine, the excellent suspension, the very comfortable ACC, etc. I only once had an issue and it was my fault: very first ride out in spring, the battery was super weak, and unfortunately I switched the engine off shortly after leaving home. But I had a charger in the top case, and after 40‘ charging at a local shop, it started again, and later that day I fully charged the battery for a few hours No issues at all sice then! Very reliable bike in my view. I can’t speak for others, but some of my BMW friends (we are crossing the Alps, doing long tours together) seem to have more technical issues than I. All the best 😀

The preload warning has to do with the underpowered battery. I had my first incident during a cold morning in year one already. After 3 years all kinds of other errors popped up during even hot start. It ist worse with the clutch pulled, strangely enough. With the new LiFePo Battery the spook is gone for now and the starter is revving the motor quicker. KTM really should have chosen a bigger battery. My favorite seat became the long two-in-one power parts model. Tried the heated seats in high and normal height. Wasn't happy with those. The heating foil takes away comfort too much.

Hi, thanks for sharing. I've just ordered a LiFePo battery, so it's good to know that it will solve the preload warning. I've ended up making a custom seat to solve my issue, but I've heard from a few other 1290 SAS owners all saying the one-piece powerparts seat is the best 👍

Here in Portugal we need to go pay for the fuel before using the pump. So I stop the bike, shut it down, go pay (often that means waiting in line) then go back to the bike to put petrol on it. How would that work? Would I need to turn it on and off again to open the fuel tank? Thanks

I think when you have ARA on, the key goes to sleep to prevent the attack motion should prevent it from sleeping, but not always. You can reuse the pistons if they're in good nick. Of course, you have to get new piston rings. If you want to upgrade the bike you can bore the block out. I've assembled two oversize 9R motors. The first one I did was with a 923cc Wiseco kit, which gives about 151hp at the back wheel. This is imho the perfect amount of power for this bike. The second engine I did, my current bike, is a 2003 model bored out to 998cc, with CP Carrillo pistons. It's been a ported, installed a gearbox from a Z1000 and had some cam work done to it as well. The engine delivers 160bhp to the wheel with stock carbs, and 170 with 39mm flat slide carbs. I've also swapped out the suspension for that from a 2004/5 ZX-10r. But honestly, this setup is way too brutal for road use. Your gearbox looks perfectly fine. It was the 98/99 models that had weak gearboxes, and you'll spot the wear immediately. Not sure what model year your bike is (as I haven't watched the entire series yet), but it doesn't look like an early model.
