Hi this is literally my first day soldering. I tried running my tip but all that happens is the wire just beads up and falls off the tip and won’t stick. What am I doing wrong?

It is interesting that you revealed that Atlas is producing "decoder-ready" units that only interface with an ESU decoder that is not available. Now, just a little background on my Atlas product experience. I bought my share of Atlas in the 70s when I did N scale back then and they were OK for the most part given that was strictly DC era tech. Now since getting back into N scale these past three years and working my way through the learning curve with the newer DCC controller tech, I, until recently only bought Kato, BLI, and Scale Trains equipment. My most recent purchase was a pair of Atlas F units for purely nostalgic reasons which were FA1 and FB1 Erie Lakawanna units because as a kid my first train was Lionel FA1s with that livery. I trusted that they would run acceptably. However, upon addressing the units with their road numbers Only and ran for a minute, the FA unit quit entirely and was returned to Atlas for repair of a blown board. Have NEVER had any blown board issues until this. So, I feel confident that my track work and command station is reliable (it is breaker protected with high end digital board). Once I received the repair back and re-addressed the unit it ran fine. As soon as I consisted the pair to run as a consist, neither of the F1 units would respond in any way - no lights or cv read attempts at all. I read in a couple places in n scale modeling forums that there seemed to be a lacking firmware update with ESU that apparently have created this fail issue. My question is, have you heard of similar issues and are there any solutions that you are aware of?

This is how they did it back in the 50s there weren’t power packs back then so they used batteries usually car batteries as this would drain batteries relatively fast 6 volt for n and 12v for ho you could usually get away with either tho

This does not work at all on one of my new Atlas SD-9s. I kept trying and it won’t budge. I have no idea what to do if I want this shell off, I’ve never had a loco this hard to take apart

what's the purpose of doing this? what'll happen if you don't "tin the tip"?

The solder will not stick to the iron and the tip will corrode.

🌟 Wow, what an incredibly informative and detailed tutorial on installing DCC decoders in locomotives! 🚂 Your step-by-step walkthrough made it so much easier to understand the process, especially for someone like me who's new to this hobby. Thank you for sharing your expertise and insights! 🙏 👏 Your attention to detail, from testing locomotives before installation to using Kapton tape for protection, shows your dedication to quality workmanship. 💪 You've put a lot of effort into making this video helpful and educational for your viewers. 💬 What are some common challenges or troubleshooting tips you've encountered while working with DCC decoders? 🛠 It would be great to hear about your experiences in overcoming technical issues in model railroading!

Not gona lie I'm pretty quick at catching on and self training most things, it's like once I see it done correctly the first time I can usually remember those exact methods and then once I put those methods to practice it's usually 1-4x and I've got it down and I just tweak it to how I like to do it if it's possible to experiment with the methods but when it comes to soldering for some reason I'm at like my 6th time and still working out kinks, not sure if it's specific solder I'm using, or the flux or in which order I do the steps but It seems like it takes me a long time just to get solder to stick to copper wires. I'm definitely not doing it correctly

No disrespect intended. That’s not the first time the trains been moved by a battery. It’s cool that it works and I use that technique for wheel cleaning. The first electric train that Josh Lionel Cowan made was actually powered by two dry cell batteries. Still a cool video.👍👍👍👍👍👍

Interesting fact: the film was shot in 1987, and originally planned for release in early 1988, but the original distributor, De Laurentiis Entertainment Group (DEG) went bankrupt before it could be released. So, Orion Pictures bought the rights to the film in late 1988, and released it in February 1989.

I'd be writing a strongly worded letter to Atlas (not just an email). I would accuse them of misleading their consumers; withholding information knowing people won't buy the silver edition or any model of the knew they couldn't get the required decoder. I would advise them that if they don't remedy this to your satisfaction , you will be filing a complaint with the consumer affairs division of your states Attorney General's office so they can investigate this practice. (But that's just me!)

It worked great! I didn't know at first you had to tin them first and messed my first tip luckily there was a replacement on my kit! Your process is the easiest I've found! I made a little mistake of not coiling enough solder and missed a tiny spot but I reckon I could just run tin through it and be done with it. Thanks again man!

Hello my friend. I want to thank you so much for how easy you have made that process for me. I know this video is seven years old, however, I’ve been watching other ones and they’re just way too complicated. Then I saw yours and you just made that super super easy man. Thank you so much. Hello, great video... I have problems with those buds, but in my case they are the ones that the scale trains and BLI locomotives come with, in N scale. Every time they enter an area of curves with a radius of 30 cm, the car that comes connected to them, it derails (The capacity of the horizontal angle of movement of the knuckle arm is limited, which generates this problem. I don't know if this has happened to you and if so, how you solved it. I have no problems with the Kato locomotives, Tomix, Atlas and in general with no other... Are these locomotives....What do you suggest I do?
