Hm, I am trying to learn a lil bit about HVAC and this is the first vid I've watched. Thank you for explaining that so thoroughly! My goal is to have a merv16 filter on my system and I am trying to figure out how I can make that happen... My family is medically sensitive to mold so very small filtration is my main priority but we live in Florida so cooling is important also. I guess my next question is how does one decrease internal static pressure?

Nothing personal, but; it took you ten minutes to start talking about the subject you mentioned in your video title. Would love to see a concise video about a 2200sf house like mine with five ceiling filters rather than one at the furnace. Three of the five hardly ever show any dirt but are in lower use areas.

One important detail that you missed. About 6 inches above the Cat 6, you should lay down along the entire trench a yellow tape ( sort of like "Police line, do not cross" tape ) . That way, if anyone starts digging in there, the tape is the first clue that the lines are down below. This is actually code in some places. I would have used some plastic pipe as protection; cheap insurance.

I wish developers would offer those upgrades in new construction houses. We have electric water heater/heat pump, but a standard furnace, the amount of waste to replace it in a two years old house is BS.

I'm up in Canada so our building codes will be different but I don't see why not go all out? It may be expensive up front but savings in the long run more than make up for it. If I could, I'd go with SIPS, Geothermal, radiant floor heating, on demand electric hot water and solar panels. Only thing left to the grid is water and sewer.

Watching all those videos about wiring a house with cat6 cable just makes me realize how much money I wasted on buying Ethernet cables considering how easy it is to "make" one yourself. You can buy a 20ft cable for $15...or you can buy a 1000ft for $100 and a couple tools for $30 max. And then it's just a matter of adding a couple dollars in a pack of 50 RJ45 male ends and you've got 25 cables of any length you want. That's already less than $6 per cable and the more you make, the less expensive they get. And unless you've got some crazy wiring to do, 1000ft will probably give you enough cabling for all your needs.

Jesus…. You drilled next to an outlet with no consideration of what was behind the wall - electrical wires, plumbing, sewer. NEVER drill blind into a wall. ALWAYS use a stud finder that can detect electrical wiring. ALWAYS make sure you are extremely careful if bathroom plumbing is likely inside wall. And if drilling blind like this guy, at least mark your drill bit the width of the drywall so you don’t drill further without knowing the pipes or wires are behind.

That’s what a stud finder is for that can detect electrical wiring. If you can afford a $30 scope you can afford a decent stud finder. He drilled blind before he ever used his scope. Amateur action. Knocking on a wall is worse than using magnets. At least with magnets you can be quite certain of a stud presence with enough nails detected. But knocking could fool you is a pipe of wood spacer is knocked on.

The unit is manufactured in China. Their QC is horrible. Upon receiving the unit, it wouldn't fire because they hadn't set the high temp switch correctly, so, had to remove and reset the switch ourselves. Lately, it would feed pellets, and tech support said it was an auguer set screw not screwed into the auger flat spot. That resulted in taking the back panel off, working on it, and that was NOT the problem. Tech is good if you get the right person.

Thank for the video. I had my furnace replaced 3 years ago and it was oversized. It countinued to over heat and shut off and turn back on right away. Ive had the technician out 7x now though out the install to try to fix. I was told by a different hvac tech that the has was tuned down to temporarily fix the over heating. Well now its in the negative cold snap here in Chicago and my heat cant keep up with the -10s and 20+degree windshield. Runs all night for few days stright sometimes dosent shut off. We went to bed and it was 74 degrees woke up and it was reading 68 degrees in the home. Had to buy a space heater to make it though last few days. Different techs who came out said the furnace installed was to large for my home. Also the return air duck was to small. They said the downstairs area could use a return because it dosen't have one. My question is, is this issue fixable and is the contract responsible for rectifying this problem with the correct size furnace. I have a warranty company that i use and they now said they aren't going to replace it, even though they admited to the contractor they used said the new units to big. My old furnace never had that problem before. Any recourse you can recommend be greatly appreciated.
@stephencavill5 ай бұрын
A furnace overheating has little to do with outdoor conditions IMO. Waking up to 68 degrees for a week or two is no big deal IMO. Put on a sweater. You need a static pressure test on ductwork, and a load calc done to see what size system you really need. I highly doubt either of those things were done. I have a video on load calcs, and you can actually do it yourself with programs listed in the comments. Watch this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f56BidmHr9SrhIE.html

Not crazy! I want my furnace to be sized for the worst possible scenario. I don’t want the ship that I am traveling on to be safe for 98% of the storms. And if you think there is galaxies out there, (I don’t) then you would want your spacecraft to be designed for all the possible scenarios that you can think of. End of story. I don’t want to find out that my furnace is not able to preform on the worst storms of the season.

Thanks for the comment Darrell. In my house, we will put on a sweater when it gets super cold. I'd strongly encourage you to look at the consequences of oversized HVAC. Hey i just installed merv 14 filters in my system for the allergy problem in our house and noticed a increase in cfm at all the vents. so you said that using a higher merv filter decreases cfm.. not true in my house and i would challenge anyone to measure the output of the vents after installing higher merv filters.
@stephencavill7 ай бұрын
Interesting. How was cfm measured? What thickness filter did you have and do you have now?
@rbnjr7 ай бұрын
@@stephencavill increased cfm blows harder and can be felt easily zero measurement required the filters are one inch thick but non of those things mean anything as increased cfm does happen when you load up a blower of this design and to claim otherwise would not be true. Cleaning the air in the house is more important than any argument to not clean the air in your house. You may claim anything you wish but the facts speak for themselves.

@@rbnjr This sounds like you are not testing, but guessing by putting your hand over a register to feel the air flow. Even if you have an ECM motor that is ramping up to compensate for increase static pressure in your merv 13 filter, I'm skeptical of your claims. Thanks for the comments and best of luck to you.
@OneTrueCat5 ай бұрын
@@stephencavill I'd be willing to bet they also didn't test new vs new. Older filters get plugged up, so a high merv filter brand new might actually flow better than a lower one that's completely covered in dust and debris.
@rbnjr3 ай бұрын
@@stephencavill The volume of air flow increase is noticeable without using your hand as a gauge. I asked other people to walk thru the home to feel the cool air coming from the vents. my wife has asked me to close a few in areas where she worked as they cooled it off too much for her. This actually happens and volume increases and does not decrease. I do not understand why you went to so much trouble to provide information that is not at all accurate and have people believing a filter with less filtering is better for their machine and so it is more important than their health!

I would advise against this. Air is not like heat transfer. You take air into your body, it's like a food. Air can hurt you. You send on things that are irreplaceable, like your health. Merv 11 filter minimum, 13 would be better. Mix the air constantly. Get an IAQ monitor. Media filter 4" minimum.
