Hi James, just trying to find some info on Bio Balls. I use them in a trickle filter, but am thinking of having them completely submerged with air pumping through them. How do you use yours?

Lots of Question for you but just a couple at first. What country/climate are you in. Have yo gotten Papaya and any bananas yet, the fruit that is? Not many women on you tube. Love your ideas and your heart interest in Aquaponic. Keep experimenting and videoing.

Queensland Australia. Semi tropical, yes lots of Papaya and bananas, very sweet, I pour all the bloody water from de-frosted meat onto them, being careful not to overload the system with nitrates

I've got approx. 300 aloes that didn't freeze this spring. The mother was given as a gift to me when my previous husband died and I just keep transplanting the pups. That plant is a lifesaver for burns.

That large tank where all of your fish poo is, approx. how many of those bioballs did you need? Some dude on Ebay has them 5 pack of 150 pcs (750 total) for $20 US, but it looks to me like you've got at least that much or more.
@CEDARVALE54
@CEDARVALE54 5 жыл бұрын
You do not need a lot of balls. They are only there to provide surface are for the bacteria to convert the nitrates to nitrite. The fish poo sinks to the bottom and sits on top of the bio-balls. The top 2 layers of balls are full of poo, the bottom ones are clear of poo. I have shade cloth hung into the tank attached to the top of the sides and the balls are in there, the water flows over the sides that hang down about 12". I have about 1500-2000 balls in there. I have 1500 fish in the system. I paid about au$105 for 2000 balls. They last forever

@@CEDARVALE54 Thank you Regina for responding. I think I found something a little bit cheaper than the bio-balls. Those plastic pot scrubbers that are made out of mesh are 6 for $1 at our dollar store. They are bigger than the balls. www.amazon.com/Round-Nylon-Scrubber-Scouring-Scrub/dp/B0773VZ2P4?th=1 Some are made of nylon. Some are made of polypropylene. Either way, they should be safe for the fish and I won't have to pay shipping! We are supposed to get rain tonight and tomorrow and we finally got the pond built. Haven't got the liner fastened down, we'll wait until we get enough water in there before we fasten the top of the liner. 8' (2.4384 meters) x 8' (2.4384 meters) x 20 inches (50.8 cm). deep. We'll build a bigger one, hopefully for catfish. I think catfish like it deeper. And a grow out channel for the baby crayfish (marbled). I'll probably grow rice in it and let them eat the leftover roots and stuff. I'm not allowed to have your Australian Crayfish without a permit and it has to be in a building to make sure they can't escape! LOL I suppose that means hurricane proof!
@CEDARVALE54
@CEDARVALE54 5 жыл бұрын
The pot scrubbers may break into tiny pieces after a while and be ingested by the fish, they should work well with a high bio-logical surface area, the balls are UV treated. Just a thought. Here in Australia some of our vegetables come in plastic mesh bags which you could also use . Nice size pool you are building. My pools are deeper one end.

@@CEDARVALE54 Thanks Regina...you wouldn't believe it! I went to the stores to get them and they were out of stock chain wide! None of their stores had them, LOL! Oh well...any thoughts on using shade cloth? I've got plenty of that. It's UV protected, knitted.

No, bananas do not like to sit in water submerged you can plant them on the edge above the water line. My bananas were in 300mm (12") pots, I planted them so the bottom was 1" in the water the rest was above the water line. I used fine coconut fibber in the pot it is a good wicking material. 2 times a week I pour water over the top in summer. I hope this helps.Regina

Maybe you could dig out some swales in places along the hills and plant some things in them. So you can slow the water that is leaving your property and clear it up so it isn't mucky and carrying all your dirt and water away. That is something to do after it stops raining though.

Regina, just a small suggestion. Title your next video, something like, A walk around a 10 yo aquaponic system. I do not know anyone else that can do it.. Show people how they evolve, what they can expect, the dollars, the effort, the results. You will go to number 1 on the KZfaq Aquaponics ladder and hopefully make a few dollars as well. Cheers Floot..

I grow vegetables in them, either using cups that fit into the holes, or, float trays on top of the rafts with coir coco nut fiber to grow larger plants that then float ontop of the water and the moisture wicks up
