Thank you Regina. I found this to be very interesting and informative. I use bio balls in my aquarium and that's how I wound up here! Cheers.

Hi James, just trying to find some info on Bio Balls. I use them in a trickle filter, but am thinking of having them completely submerged with air pumping through them. How do you use yours?

mineralization tanks are for creating an anaerobic area for other bacteria that can break down solids further

That large tank where all of your fish poo is, approx. how many of those bioballs did you need? Some dude on Ebay has them 5 pack of 150 pcs (750 total) for $20 US, but it looks to me like you've got at least that much or more.

You do not need a lot of balls. They are only there to provide surface are for the bacteria to convert the nitrates to nitrite. The fish poo sinks to the bottom and sits on top of the bio-balls. The top 2 layers of balls are full of poo, the bottom ones are clear of poo. I have shade cloth hung into the tank attached to the top of the sides and the balls are in there, the water flows over the sides that hang down about 12". I have about 1500-2000 balls in there. I have 1500 fish in the system. I paid about au$105 for 2000 balls. They last forever

@@CEDARVALE54 Thank you Regina for responding. I think I found something a little bit cheaper than the bio-balls. Those plastic pot scrubbers that are made out of mesh are 6 for $1 at our dollar store. They are bigger than the balls. www.amazon.com/Round-Nylon-Scrubber-Scouring-Scrub/dp/B0773VZ2P4?th=1 Some are made of nylon. Some are made of polypropylene. Either way, they should be safe for the fish and I won't have to pay shipping! We are supposed to get rain tonight and tomorrow and we finally got the pond built. Haven't got the liner fastened down, we'll wait until we get enough water in there before we fasten the top of the liner. 8' (2.4384 meters) x 8' (2.4384 meters) x 20 inches (50.8 cm). deep. We'll build a bigger one, hopefully for catfish. I think catfish like it deeper. And a grow out channel for the baby crayfish (marbled). I'll probably grow rice in it and let them eat the leftover roots and stuff. I'm not allowed to have your Australian Crayfish without a permit and it has to be in a building to make sure they can't escape! LOL I suppose that means hurricane proof!

The pot scrubbers may break into tiny pieces after a while and be ingested by the fish, they should work well with a high bio-logical surface area, the balls are UV treated. Just a thought. Here in Australia some of our vegetables come in plastic mesh bags which you could also use . Nice size pool you are building. My pools are deeper one end.

@@CEDARVALE54 Thanks Regina...you wouldn't believe it! I went to the stores to get them and they were out of stock chain wide! None of their stores had them, LOL! Oh well...any thoughts on using shade cloth? I've got plenty of that. It's UV protected, knitted.

Making too much work for yourself. A lot of easier ways to deal with all that poo and balls, without touching them.
