My L28 seems to like a lot of timing. I’m having an issue tuning it though. I’m using microsquirt, and it seems like it completely lacks torque below 5000rpms. It pulls like a train once it gets going though. I’d like to look at your maps when you get a tune you like.

The car looks great! If you're not opposed to killing your brakes, I start at a low rpm ordinate in the VE map and drag the brakes to maintain that rpm while slowly adding more throttle to work through from one cell to the next in the same rpm column. Rinse and repeat from one rpm break point to the next until you dont want to drag your brakes that hard as the rpm gets higher and the car is making more power. In this scenario, your brakes are the load bearing dyno. Much faster and more effective than just driving around with autotune on. The brakes take a bit of a beating, but just let them cool off between rpm points and you'll be fine.

Kris, that really looks great! Fantastic. I am happy you didn't put fender flares on it. Classy and cool. If you are going for a 5 spd, get one from a late 82-83 non-turbo 280zx. This will have the close ratio gear spread and the taller 5th for cruising. (It is widely considered the best of the Z gearboxes) and if you pair it with the 3.90 diff also from the 82-83 zx, you will have great off the line gearing combo. if you are doing racing stuff, then go for the late 77-80 5 spd and keep the 3.54 diff that is already on the 280z. and in case you're interested in a T5 tranny, grab one from a late 83 280zx turbo. Also, don't be afraid to rev it up while driving. the L28 motors are performance engines and were designed to rev high (the complete 13 year run of the L-series) Lastly, there is a website - datsunzgarage.us/ Lots of good info about the engines, transmissions, and the diffs, and all the gearing numbers and ratios that they have. really good stuff if you are going to do any modifying to your already-badass 280. Check it out. I hope to do a 77 280z soon and I plan to paint it white, all at home. Your videos are very helpful. Thank you and welcome to the world of the Z! Cheers

How do you like the Strange front struts..? Or have you since changed..? I have the 4cyl struts in the front of mine now but it hasn't seen the track yet nor has it been launched hard on the street. I am running the Team Z street beast set up in the rear with the relocated uppers, strange adj shocks and their drag springs. I really don't want to drop $1500 on drag struts. I seen Bilstein make a drag strut but I don't think it's adjustable.

Mine sit in like that with a Ford racing trac-loc and Moser axles I had made right at 29 inches vs the stock 29.188 length, RC Comp 15x10, 6.5 backspace, MT 275/50 drag radial. I am also running the Team Z street beast kit with relocated uppers. I also had to give the inner wheel wells a little love, I haven't touched the outer lips yet but have only driven the car a few times for short trips and have yet to launch it hard, but no rub yet. Doesn't the rear of the body want to lift under launch..? I may get away not rolling the lips if that's the case. I know this video is 2 yrs old but was hoping someone else might get something out of my comment. I like your work Chris, I am also meticulous with my work.

You need to attend Tuning University..... a lot of vacuum advance is good as long as it doesn’t detonate. 40 total is usually too much for a SBF, usually around 34*. Smaller primary jets won’t change idle A/F ratio, that requires tuning the idle circuit. You probably have this all figured out by now....
@D.Vincent1993Ай бұрын
Did you have any issues with the axle being tough to slide in or out..? My drivers side seems like it's bent, I don't know if it's something in the Ford racing trac-loc or the tube is bent. I got the rear end all built and got it in the car then found the issue. When rolling the car by hand there's a spot where something is binding at about 30-40% of a full revolution. The axle goes in and out kind of tough, splines are all good, brand new Moser axles, I even tried 2 other axles and they all went in tough. Any thought's are well appreciated. You do good work btw.

My guess would be it’s bent. It should slide in easy. The only resistance should be the bearing seal.
