Curious, did a person have to make their own bow, arrow, arrow head, etc. Or, were there individuals in the tribe that specialized in the bow, arrow, etc?

Excellent series! I have one quick question: What were bowstrings for Comanche bows typically made of?

Beautiful hand crafted short bows, it was and still is a very reliable and effective weapon in the hands of skilled shooters.

Never too late to learn new things. I knew about the Navajo cide talkers but not comanches. Great servjce.i grew up farther west and coincidentally next to a couple reservations. I knew graduates of Indian schools and played against 1 in HS. As a child the 1st thing I was taught about them was tbeir horsemanship. They were fantastic riders a d carried for the animals very well especially comparred to others I'll not name. They did a great service in the war much gratitude and respect.

Are you sure the Comanches are monotheists? I always thought they were polytheists.

Thanks so much for sharing this video. I make all kinds of bows but my very favorites are the Comanche style bows in osage orange - elegantly simple effective shooters. Great video, and the next one I am doing offset nocks like your grandfather's.

It always makes me smile when people reference English Longbows, cheers lads, its flattering that people acknowledge what a great war Bow that was/is, although it was the Welsh who were reputedly the best in the British Isles with the longbow.

If Martinez has the flag he should gift it to the museum or back to the chibittys when his works are done. My cousins and uncle are chibittys and my moms a saupitty and someone in direct line has uncle Larry's diary flag. It'd just seem right that something so special be passed down to blood, what Martinez is doing is the lords work and maybe the last wishes but in 3 generations when that flag is in Joe's great grandkids homes I'd hate for it to go unappreciated.

He said " I found my peyote button, praise Allah" or something of that measure. I wonder what that was, some inside joke or just a little one to himself that is seemingly timeless?

"I'm going to sleep in my jeep, it's been a rugged day" man for almost a hundred years rugged comanches have been using the word rugged. Love to see it. Crazy this guy is my uncle and I'm hearing his thoughts from 80 years ago.

Interesting presentation for this whole series btw. Do the "bulbs" that serve as the points on the blunts seem to be a separate piece stuck onto a conventional shaft, or do they seem to be carved from a single continuous piece of wood?
