Thank you for the great video. How does it feel when writing compared to the custom 743 you have? Is the 845 smoother? Please be specific and detailed.
@WrexelsWorld26 минут бұрын
I haven't used these two pens for a while. My 743 came with a FA nib whereas this came with a M. In terms of nib feel, there isn't a lot of difference based on nib material. The main factors that contribute to writing feel will be nib size (these two have the no 15 nib size), nib grind (probably the greatest factor, most any nibs tuned and ground properly will feel smooth), nib material (in a blindfold test, it would be hard to tell the difference between 18k and 14k) and lastly nib design (some nibs are deliberately made thinner or have a design that promotes bending to make them feel softer e.g. the FA). To summarize, the 845 could be slightly smoother but only because of the grind. Other sub-factors are ink flow (feed design look similar) and also the body (the 845 has a plastic grip section but the rest of the body is mostly ebonite that has a urushi coating.

Thank you. I also prefer buying new but in the case of MB, the price new is objectionable for me. Its possible to develop the skill to detect a fake once you have had handled a real one before so maybe try that.

That was a great video thank you very much. I watched it twice. Just today, just today!, my new 149P turned up from MB themselves. I’m very happy with it. Glad i bought it. Worth the money? Not even close, but I don’t care, I like/love it anyway. I also love the knowledge it’s real, genuine, 100%. PPL just don’t realise quite how MANY fake MB’s there are out there. I got bitten on the arse with a fake MB off EBay TWENTY YEARS AGO. That’s how long they’ve been faking MB’s for. AND, as we know, it’s not an overly difficult task to fake a MB. They’re not rocket science. Caveat emptor and have fun!

It really depends on your use case. The 823 has some limitations - particularly how hard it is to clean and to keep 100% clean. If you always use the same ink, its less of an issue.

If you want to really flex for expressive writing then just get a cheaper flex focused one (fountain pen revolution) where if you mess up the nib it's 20 dollars and no big deal. All of these pens are "soft" but for daily writing to and to improve your regular writing. What they teach you is to not put so much presssure and take your time to enjoy writing. They provide an experience which for me is the reason I have fountain pens. For softer nibs I have the range: FA15, FA10, #10 & #15 SF (these put down an amazing line for beautiful writing), custom Urushi. All of these pens while "soft" can be used as daily writers on all paper. I can't say that for other "soft" nibs like my Pelikan M1000 which is useless bc you have to be so careful with it. Pilot quality is amazing and although I have many other pens and brands, these are my go to as no issues ever and they just write perfectly. I love their range of soft nibs so much more than my #15 M (from 823h. They have character. The regular nibs are great but aren't much different than high end steel nibs you can get for cheaper today. They just write and write well but I think if you are paying a lot of money for fountain pens, you want something with character and these provide that for me. For the money they can't be beat. Even the #5 SF is super soft and amazing for 100 dollars. I put my FA15 in the 823 body which is pretty much my favorite writing pen. Then I put the FA10 in the 743 body. I made the channels on the standard feeds a tiny bit deeper with a scalpel and never had railroading even with the FA10. It's lovely because the nib tip is long and very thin which provides a cool writing experience. I love it and recommend it to anyone who really enjoys just writing. Performs on all paper which I can't say for some of my more expensive pens like my Custom Urushi. For the money the FA15 is the best and most interesting nib on the market for me. If you can afford to get a 823 and 743 and switch the FA15 into the 823 I think you will be happy. You can then buy $ 50 Asvine v200 bodies and I put my #15M, and #10 & #15 SF in those one bodies (they work with standard Asvine feeds and housings) and now those pens are perfect daily writers either a better balanced vacuum filler and the grip section is much better than standard Pilot pen bodies. Hope this helps. I highly recommend these soft nibs and if you want to really flex get a flex specific pen (I used Fountain Pen Revolution and vintage flex like Pelikan 140s).

The Preppy writes best of all the budget pens I own. The Pilot Kakuno has a prettier nib, but the Preppy is smoother and half the price. I'd say it's even a tad smoother than the TWISBI Eco and Lamy Safari, much more expensive pens. I even like the standard blue cartridge the Preppy comes with. The ink shades quite nicely.

Homo Sapiens vs m800 vs 823?
@WrexelsWorldАй бұрын
All 3 have drawbacks, of the 3, the Homo Sapiens is the most luxurious feeling and the most expensive plus it has a very good nib feel however occasional leaks and the fact that you cannot see the ink quantity is a major drawback; the M800 is less luxurious and their nibs are inconsistent, however as an everyday workhorse it's great as it is easy to clean and is reliable; the 823 has my favourite nib of all of these 3, it is smooth and refined with non-excessive ink flow, it's drawback is how difficult it is clean it out when changing colours plus possible cracking if you open the section too often (or if you tighten it too much).

When I was in grade school our desks had an ink well in the top right-hand corner where we used nibbed contoured wooden dip pens. This was the only writing instrument we were allowed to use in the classroom. No pencils or ballpoint pens ever. If we made a mistake let's say with spelling we were allowed to draw one straight line through the word and then write the correct spelling. Formal script writing was learned and penmanship and grammar were graded no matter what the subject. That was in the early 1950's. Not sure what they require now.

I did manage to get a Lamy 2000 in B from Singapore and also Taipei. Around $195 from Ty Lee in Taipei and recently, the Black Amber from a local retailer for less than $500. If I were to purchase this special edition online, it would roughly be the same and I might get hit with GST and handling fee when it’s sent here. I love the Lamy 2000, it’s the only Lamy pen I like writing with.

I like the 15 nib best, but for the lower price, I don’t mind the 10. It’s still a big nib. I have a 742 med, a fine 823, a medium fine and an FA 743….I’m thinking of getting another 742 with a soft fine, or soft medium fine. I just wish they came in more colors, so many black pens…!

Increasingly, I am liking the no 10 nibs more for their versatility and yes, the relative affordability. The no 15s are a bit fiddly with using for fast writing and while travelling; they also take a lot of getting used to due to the greater distance from paper. It seems that I have most of the same nibs as you and also in the same pens!

Just watched your video. I own the same pen the Elite with steel nib with gold color coating. It came with the squeeze rubber converter and it was locked in tight. I researched online and found that soaking in warm water will loosen the converter and with a little twisting and pulling the converter came out. I soaked it about an hour. Now I could use the Pilot cartridges.

Great review! Ive been considering the Fermo because when i click the pen, i sometimes get small amount of ink dots on the page or my desk because of the jerk of the click; has this occurred with yours? I was thinking the LS would be worth the upgrade, but then found this Fermo, and seemed like a more affordable resolution. Thanks!!
@WrexelsWorld3 ай бұрын
I don't recall it happening to me for the modern Capless pens but it might happen from an ink leak from the nib area and splattering might then appear at the trap door area when deploying the nib. Sad to say, the Fermo will not be immune to this

My first ever fountain pen ink I bought just for the name lol...luckily it is actually one of my favourite inks and I am still using it almost daily 2 years later (Diamine Writer's Blood). I went into the fountain pen hobby head first just wanting to try every pen or nib that I could...so that is where my money and focus went. A couple years later and I became obsessed with inks, my humble 2 bottle collection expanding to 13! It's a lot...I think it would be a good idea for me to re-evaluate what I like, and set some boundaries...I like the one you mentioned about not buying inks that other people have. I would add to that, for myself, not buying limited edition inks because it puts too much pressure on me and I end up with things I don't use. Surprised I didn't find this video 2 years ago when I got into fountain pens, though, I guess I wasn't paying attention to inks then. Anyway, happy to finally find this video, best of luck on your ink and pen journey :)

I must've had rotten lucky, my first and so far only TWSBI is the Eco in a broad nib. It had severe baby's bottom. I got rid of that but now I don't have anything to smooth it out more so it's super scratchy lol. I'll be getting some micro mesh for that soon, but I haven't used it since I tuned it (about a year ago). I think I'd like it a lot otherwise, so I'm gonna strick with it. Currently debating making it a stub nib since I've since decided I don't really like broad nibs. I kind of want to get a second, maybe not an Eco though, I'm leaning towards a 580 since I like the look of them and everyone seems to like them a little bit more. I've been looking for a good EDC pen that I wouldn't be super upset about losing if that ever happened, although I'm typically very good at keeping my pens and pencils from being lost.

Is 823 F nib much better then 74 F? Or they are comparible ?
@WrexelsWorld4 ай бұрын
Better is very subjective, some people like bigger nibs for the distance they give from where you hold the pen to the paper. The line widths are similar, however the larger 823 nib is ever so bouncier/springier and is wetter so might have a slightly wider line.
