Whats the difference between 4 and 5 besides being able to test the cylinders at the same time? The reason I ask is 5 is ten times the price as 4.

Hello from Alaska T-Mike!!!!!! I just got a 30hp Johnson outboard that my brother gave to me it was all wired and set up for gear box and everything so i converted it to manual start and everything you need to do to get it back to a "OLD SCHOOL" outboard and I had never worked on a outboard before, i am 34 and yes I am fine with admitting that i need a lesson from time to time, and now from watching a few videos of yours i can say with ALL DO RESPECT! That I will be coming to T-MIKE for help. you are helping me set up before winter i thank you T!

Fuel stabilizer added to fresh fuel is far better than just running the engine periodically. Fuel separation is what you are describing and it will contaminate the rest of the fuel in the tank when not treated. In my marine engines I use Startran and it protectes the fuel safely for one year. They say two years, but I only count on one. I run the tank low at the end of boating season and fill with fresh fuel, add stabilizer and run the fuel through the engine. Yamaha owners manual says regular unleaded, so that's what I run. Top tier fuel only. When I buy a 5 gallon tank for equipment, I use Stabil and add as soon as I get home. It works great and I mix for my two strokes out of that and all is good.

Hey T-Mike, Thank you for posting. I have a question I hope you can shed some light on. I picked up an air cooled 1967 Yamaha P-125A (G), The original service manual recommends a 20:1 ratio mix / 15:1 for running in, However the original fuel tank single line feed states a mix ratio of 40:1. I'm confused as to use the 20:1 or 40:1? Also as it is air cooled should I be using the red or blue oil?.

Ohhh - that brings back great memories! My grandfather had the same model year Johnson 18 on a 14' deep vee starcraft aluminum boat. As I kid, gramps would give me a couple bucks for gas at the marina and I would be out on the lake from morning until dinner time. A 100# kid with ball cap turned backward, I thought I was piloting an offshore racing boat. Thanks for the video. BTW - I still have his Johnson DT40 (1939) that he purchased new and it still looks and runs like a new one! It stopped pumping water, so until I get that problem solved, it just looks good on the stand :)

t-mike great video. You do some great work. I bought some used coils and spark plugs wires and they are great also! From your experience, what is a good compression that indicates the motor can run healthy on the smaller HP(less than 10hp) johnsons 1960-1980's. I'm seeing around 80 with it decreasing when hot.

Looks like that rewind and housing is common to many motors of that era. I am thinking a Zephyr or Lightwin rewind will work. Also looks like one of the pawl springs broke or came off causing the pawl to engage while running.

As an electronics engineer myself for 30 plus years have found temperature sensitive Capacitors may test fine at room temperature or higher but totally fail at cold temperatures lower in microfarad . This is why an esr meter is superior it doesn't just load a Capacitors with a small voltage it actually checks its resistance even different than a typical volt meter .
