Great information Mike and I have always been a Johnson fan and I have always done my maintenance but I have never done what you do restoring Motors. I have great memories with an old Green Johnson 5.5ho motor always like the color.

I grew up with a Evinrude 25hp it was a good motor we could depend on that motor to get us home every time

When I grew up in 1970s-1980s, we had a hand-me-down 1950s Mercury, which we used until something broke that didn’t have (in 1980s) part availability. During Covid, I bought an old Mercury that matched the one we had, and I tried to get it running, and I did (though not well), and the design is definitely a nightmare, you need (expensive) tools, for example, the flywheel nut tool is like $50

I agree 100 %, Recoil in the cover is nuts, I had one to fix and it was a pain!

Great video, Mike! An old adage from the 50's... Your Mercury might get you there quick, but my Evinrude will always get me home.

Great video Mike ! Thanks...I worked on Evinrude's and Johnson's when I was working summer job for College, 1980 to 1984. I never knew that Mercury Motors were designed to be "hard to work on" I too love the late 1950's Johnson and Evinrudes ! Keep up the good work ! Mark C.

Thanks for another great video, T-Mike! I have landed on the same conclusion after having tried to replace damaged reed valves on a Merc 7.5. They are sitting inside the crank case and are really hard to get to. You basically have to split the crank case 😬. And I also find Mercs to be surprisingly heavy.

Great video T-Mike .... At least all 3 were American companies and I've own all 3 .. OMC for ease of working on them - Mercury for top end speed ..

Yes. You're right about Mercury. I would never ever buy one for the exact same reason...they're crap to work on because of all the special tools one needs! My Evinrude Twin Sport 9 1/2 HP is so nice and easy to work with, and so is my tiny Johnson Seahorse 3 HP. Btw..I'll have to change the coils on that Seahorse...both are porous and absolutely smoked.

SOME MERCS dont have cylinder heads its all built into one casting,, also merc changed alot of the years, they had weak lower units.... they were faster than the omcs, but not as reliable..

I enjoyed the video. Any thoughts on what the DYI friendy brand is today, since Johnson and Evinrude are no longer making outboards motors? One day I may have to replace my 1990 Johnson 6hp. But it is still running great, all I do is change the spark plugs, lower unit oil, and water pump as recommended. Great motors.

You need injector testers and plug in diagnostics for motors now.

@@michaeljsimon Disappointing, but thanks for the info. A friend who just bought a 4hp from one of the major brands told me the dealer said it should be fine through the warranty period. However, after that think of it as a disposable motor and buy another one if anything breaks. The cost to repair anything on any brand, will probably be more than the motor is worth. I thought it was an exaggeration, but maybe not.
