Out of all your attempts to decipher the lyrics from yes song. I think you came very close. The reality is you get to create your own story using the words anyway you want

Don't try and take the lyrics literally. They are all metaphors that cast a picture and paint a montage to take you on a journey 24:40

Really like YES! If we are not coming back to Rush, after the Yes journey I would suggest Jethro Tull: Aqualung, locomotive breath, living n the past, bungle in the jungle and Teacher.. 1978 live version of locomotive breath But I would love to hear more Rush!!! Thanks for your great reactions

There's a thing called synesthesia, where one can taste colors, see sounds, etc. That might help you understand the lyrics. I think Jon dabbled in substances back in the day, haha.

With their lyrics, what you hear...is...what they are saying. You are in control of their lyrics. If you looked up the lyrics...you would know their lyrics... but, when you next heard them play, you wouldn't feel the experience had been improved by your research. You would simply stand amazed, like before.

Okay...Eric Porter suggested this?? Eric Porter is the reason I have listened to (and loved) Yes for almost forty years. Is that Eric Porter the same as MY Eric Porter?? ...Eric Porter?

Yes, most of the lyrics in Yes are cryptic. Even when you can understand them, you often still can't understand them.

This song was the collective moment in the early 70s when every rock drummer lifted the needle off the record and said “Hold up… who the hell is Bill Bruford???” … and listened again 1000 times.

Lyrics are hard to make out and more symbolic than literal. Ethereal and spiritual for sure. I believe Jon Anderson is a Christian. All of these men were/are genius. And you have a very high musical intelligence. Great reaction. 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' is epic. Particularly 'The Revealing Science of God'. Nothing like this music on the horizon today.

First, congratulations and welcome to the Yes rabbit hole. Second, don’t worry about the lyrics. Jon Anderson wrote stream of consciousness lyrics that hand over the meaning-making to the listener. Total trust. Third, please do a search on both keyboardist Rick Wakeman and Drummer Alan White to discover who they recorded with before joining Yes… holy cow… And we wish you endless joy with future Yes realisations. I won’t even get into the brilliance of Steve Howe on guitar and the GOAT Chris Squire on Bass. Next recommendation: Gates of Delirium , or Sound Chaser, from the album Relayer… the only album featuring jazz fusion keyboardist Patrick Moraz. The studio album versions hit harder. Enjoying your reactions from here in Australia

While Geddy has always been a REALLY good bass player, I feel like he really started working his bass toward the end of Rush. I think part of this was the willingness to deviate from the album version of the song. But I’ve seen a couple of examples of late stage live Rush where Geddy is just FIRE on the bass

Both Geddy and Alex are playing pedal keyboards on this song too. Look closely. 😁The F to Am figure is in 7/8 but they don’t think about it, they just play what comes out.

Jon Anderson (the lead singer and lyricist of Yes) has in many interviews stated his lyrics are written more for the way the words are used as a percussive element. Even he doesn't know what they mean half the time. Pure Dadaist

You really need to listen to Yes with your eyes closed. All the time you're reading lyrics, you're missing the flow of the music. Just let it pick you up and carry you along like a river of sound, including the voice. The words eventually get inside you and start to suggest moods and meanings on their own. "Looking for the sunshine" is a line that sticks with me. Letting go of 'the challenge' to understand a single literal meaning is part of the challenge. Think of it as Jon singing 'in tongues'!

I think the lyrics are about the contrast between the relentless stress of 9-5 city life, as expressed through that hard driving opening, and then getting away from it all into the country and being energised by the beauty of creation eg a lovely sunrise, which tempers the stress and lets you survive.

Think of the vocals as being an instrument and of this instrument the vocals are a voicing of the instrument. Like the way an acoustic piano is “voiced when it is tuned. Like the way flangers are used with guitars , or the push bars on a Hammond. What the lyrics say are less important than how the words flow. There’s nothing to figure out because the lyrics mean different things to different listeners. The lyrics might bing out different feelings to the same listener at different time. Quite brilliant you see!!! Got it?? Good.
