To clarify: The town of Velasco (the first capital of Texas) was roughly 100 miles east of Indianola, where present day Surfside Beach is located, in Brazoria County.

Those rocks really make this place very special. Seeing the hiking route prompts me to caution everyone to watch where you step. Falling from one of those rocky bluffs could truly be catastrophic. Best to hike with a friend or two, and with a cell phone in case anyone has an accident. But definitely worth a visit! By the way... has anyone ever seen a snake in among those rocks? Don't snakes love cool spots like that?

Please note the correct pronunciation of the following: CA-Val-ry are men on horseback. CAL-va-ry is where Jesus died. Thank you for the video, which is really good.

I went north of Lake Amistad and was amazed at the beauty, cleanliness, and remoteness of the river. This is true because the river doesn’t flow through any human development and has few human visitors. Unfortunately this wonderful natural jewel is now being publicized. The more known it becomes the more likely developers will show up and ruin it, what with the population explosion in central Texas and the arrival of very wealthy people. So sad that we can’t share about a wonderful place then worry about it being “discovered.”

The name doesn't do it justice. Why do they have to name it the Devil's river? Ugh. How about something more inviting like the Swaggering River, the Lonesome River, the Sweetwater River or the Lone Star River? Something this beautiful shouldn't be giving homage to the devil. Goodness gracious, mercy alive! The devil ain't PURE folks!😘

I paddled that river every year for a decade. It’s one of my most cherished places on earth. I still have all my maps and journals from all of those trips.

Thank you! Our neck of the woods. Couple of things. First, thanks for the 'Prada' insert just outside Valentine, TX. I've watched many a vehicle slam on their brakes when it comes into view. Second, sadly, Cornudas Cafe (aka May's Cafe) has closed down. I ate their every week for almost four years on my weekly trip from El Paso to Carlsbad. Absolutely great food, yet, all good things must come to an end.

Great video, thanks. I descended from the Thielepape family. Brothers George and Wilhelm arrived in Indianola. My great great great Grandfather George, a civl engineer and draftsman, settled in Austin and became one of it's most prominent citizens. Wilhelm, an architect, engineer, music composer and lithographer, went on to become Mayor of San Antonio. According to the diary of Prince Carl of Solm Braunfels, Thielepape traveled with him extensively when he first visited Texas.

My mom graduated from Paducah in the 50s, pretty much at the town's peak. In 1996, my grandmother passed away and my mom sold her house. It was a small house, but it was in good repair and had central heat & air and a carport on a double size corner lot. My mom got $6,000 for it.

The book blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy describes this city as the “biggest town of sin in all of Texas, full of whores, plumb up, they say you can get clapped a days ride out when the winds right, and about any kind of meanness you can name!” And historical references made during the anti texas remonstrances against Texas annexation verify these claims, Texas is a haven for vagabonds, criminals, bigamists, hellbenders, fire eaters , and desperadoes in the entire North American continent, call the Texasses sons of America?! So are the sons of Botany Bay England , but who will place the transported convicts of new holland with our reputable and intelligent New England puritans?! And so will rank Texans who immigrated on necessity to escape justice and the gallows amongst our northern free and industrious citizens, sons of pilgrims and Washington?!

Great video, thanks for sharing! I attended school in Harlingen and we played a few baseball games in Roma so know that stretch of 83 well! I always thought it was odd that yhe RGV was not considered south Texas, too. Not sure the origin, but geographically for purposes of research, South Texas is considered area soith of San Antonio through the brush country region and then roughly south of Laredo-Corpus line is Deep South Texas. Coming from the Willamette Valley of Oregon also thought it was odd it was considered a Valley, too. My HS history teacher claimed it was called a Valley because when they were trying to entice farmers way back when they often associated valleys with fertile soil. Supposedly when they would bring them down via rail they would go through the King Ranch region during the night so no one knew they actually weren't passing mountains. Marketing at its finest!
