Truth be told a 1999 article I found on the Internet archive showed the Saturn sold 4.1 million in US by the summer of 1998 due to the console being in the discount Ben at rock bottom price of between $49.99 and $29.99 just to get rid of them, mind you, Sega made no money this way 😢 In Pal region it sold 1.9 million South Korea 200K Australia 60K Japan 8.8 million by 2001 The wiki version of the story was a late 1997 figure of 9.13 million. It kept selling in Japan till mid 2001. Died in the rest of the world in 1998 In August 2001 it's grand total was 13.2 million units still horrible when you consider the Genesis sold between 39 million & 43 million

It was actually the other way round, System 11 was based on a PlayStation prototype. PlayStation wasn't scaled-down Arcade hardware, System 11 was scaled-up console hardware. I'm also not sure that scaling down Model 2 would've been a good idea for SEGA, since the graphics tech was real expensive. Maybe it could've been done, but I don't know for sure, I'm not an engineer lol, but my gut tells me it would've been better to develop a console from the ground-up.

@@SixtyRGB thanks for the reply. The reason I thought of model 2 version in the Saturn was just because of segas experience developing for arcade hardware, and similar to what they did with the Genesis and the system 16 arcade hardware.
@SixtyRGB
@SixtyRGB 26 күн бұрын
@@Kruz8er Yeah I was thinking about that too, but then I remembered that System 16 was already 3 years old in 1988, upon the Mega Drive's Japanese release, and 2D hardware was going down in price very rapidly back then so it would've been a lot easier than scaling Model 2 down. Don't forget, Model 2 was being developed almost at the same time as the Saturn, and Daytona USA, its first game, was released only 8 months before the Saturn was in Japan, so it was brand-spankin'-new tech. And 3D hardware, while not expensive by 94, and coming down in price pretty fast, wouldn't reach the point where the newest tech was affordable from release until the end of the decade. So considering that, I think it'd be almost-impossible to scale down Model 2 to a home console price. Maybe it could've become way cheaper to make by '96, but they would've missed the boat entirely by then lol. So yeah, I get what you mean, the logic makes sense, but the situation wasn't entirely the same between each one. So I think pairing-down Model 2 would've been a bit daft lol.

I didn't buy it due to lack of marketing (I only save Sonic 3D Blast (meh) and some 2D Fighting game in a store a couple of times and the console gaming magazine I used to read didn't talk about it much), and the lack of IP continuation from the MD. If I was introduced to it via TR1 and RE1 for example I might've, but no one at school had it so I wouldn't have been able to trade games.

I just watched a video on the interviews with the developers of Bug! which was slated to be a launch title in America and got one of the first dev kits (the ones that were the size of a mini fridge, had no C compiler, and had to be debugged by affixing a cable directly onto the mother board) and one of the many eye opening details about the process was how late into development the Saturn's actual capabilities were "frozen", so whether or not the dual SH2 set up was always intended, it seems pretty clear that the final product was a somewhat slapdash affair and probably closer to the myth than the mythbusting here.

The Saturn also has a special place for me because of two games I discovered in the summer of 1998: Shining Force III and Panzer Dragoon Saga. I still think that what ultimately made them finally decide to quit the console business was the launch of the Xbox, because competing against NIntendo and Sony was already an uphill battle for them, but now you add Microsoft to the mix and the odds of Sega making even a dime making consoles drop to near zero. I would've quit too tbh just way too many major money players involved, the competition was crazy

Well, the Saturn's "VDPs" are actually GPUs, they provide hardware acceleration for graphics tasks. It's just that the term "GPU" wasn't widespread yet, especially not in the console space. They wouldn't be until NVIDIA and ATi popularised the term among PC gamers in the early 2000s, before making its way into the console space some years later.

I think what really screwed their dual-CPU architecture was their shared data bus, you couldn't really have them both working concurrently, they'd work one at a time which negates the "buff" you'd normally get from a dual-core system, i still don't understand why the bus was shared, still makes no sense to me at all. I think it would've just ballooned the cost of production even more to make it truly concurrent. But even then i think it wouldn't have helped that much the biggest issues were graphical issues not really processing issues, compared to the two other systems it's graphics acceleration was weaker without easy support for transparency and stuff like that, and it kinda showed over and over, direct comparisons of Saturn vs PS1 were often embarassing for the Saturn, keeping in mind it used to cost more money than the Playstation did on top

@liquidsnake6879 Ай бұрын
@@yeolemillinial8295 You can use them both, but you can't output both at the same time, so they're bottlenecked, and you might as well just have one. There are cases in which the second processor can handle things separately to optimize a few cycles that you'd lose if you were only using one CPU, but that's not really a common occurrence. Most cases of weak games at launch were not so much caused by the single-CPU but rather failure to orchestrate the two VDP chips, which is a can of worms in of itself. SEGA themselves were guilty of this with the original Virtua Fighter looking visibly embarassing compared to Remix because they failed to harness VDP2 when developing the original VF. So the original VF on the Saturn actually runs on just one VDP chip completely ignoring the other and when games looked bad on the saturn that was usually why, not so much the CPU but the VDPs

Fun fact (I wish I could remember where I read this). The textures in HotD were not intended to be the final ones. Essentially, the developer showed the work in progress to their boss saying something along the lines of 'of course the textures are not finshed and many are place holder. To which they were told 'nonsense, just ship it'.

Then if You wanna see something realistics Ridge Racer has more contents than Daytona. If You want, You can see in real roads something similar ti Ridge Racer, but nothing You Can see from Daytona!!! More of this happens 2years later with Granturismo, more realistic then other game ever made!!!

The corner in Ridge Racer that you said that you can get around with a small power slide has tiles around the outside. If you clip it just right, then you can take that corner at full speed. I've got Daytona on the PS3, but I prefer the Dreamcast version. It just feels better, you really feel pushed into your chair by the inertia of the car on the screen. I've never played another racer that does that.

I can't stand the Dreamcast version personally lol. It might have a better feeling of intertia, but for me, steering is so twitchy. I don't like how trying to take a turn ends with a 50/50 chance of sliding out that I then have to try and (fail to) correct for. It's a shame, if it had controls closer to the Arcade version, it'd probably be my favourite version of the game, it looks awesome and has some pretty neat extra tracks.

Perhaps the biggest way the difficulty with 3D hurt the Saturn is in its lack of groundbreaking event titles. You mentioned the lack of a mainline Sonic title, but basically every groundbreaking title that generation had to be 3D (as evidenced by Virtua Fighter in the early Japan era). While many of the 2D games of that generation are quite respected now, I think only SotN really made major waves during the generation at the time, and possibly some 2D fighters. It wasn’t that no one was playing 2D games, but rather those were the only ones that could usually capture the imagination of a lot of consumers. PS1 had plenty of those, and even N64 had Mario 64, Goldeneye, Ocarina, and a few others. I’m generalizing a fair bit, but I think there’s some truth to it.

@SixtyRGB
@SixtyRGB 3 ай бұрын
I picked not just Wipeout, but also Croc, Resi and Pandemonium, to show that the Saturn can create 3D very close to if not on-par with the PS1. I thought it'd be easier to show people the difference, or rather lack thereof, by showing them games they might be familiar with, giving them a more direct comparison. I thought that people would still find a way to grasp at straws with NIghts'/Burning Rangers' implementation of 3D if I just showed them and them alone, and that they wouldn't believe it to still be on par. So I thought I'd take a shortcut and say "Here is 3D literally on par with the PS1, as in appearing more or less invariably the same". In retrospect, I wish I showed both Saturn-specific 3D games, as well as PS1 ports, it would've helped to drive home the Saturn's ability to match the PS1, and its ability to create 3D experience all on its own.

We talk too much about North American (especially USA) and Japanese markets but never about Europe. Yes Sega managed to finally "beat" Nintendo in Japan with the Saturn, but they lose the European market when they were the leader with the Master System and Megadrive here. When Sega of America and Sega Japan were fighting, Sega Europe was living its own life peacefully, but I still remember reading about Sega Europe who had to correct some of Sega of America's bullshit that came to the UK/Europe. I'm pretty sure if Sega invested more in Europe they could have sold a little more consoles (especially if they translated their games, in the 90s less people were bilingual).
@SixtyRGB
@SixtyRGB 4 ай бұрын
Funnily enough, there's some new translations of some interviews from not too long ago that say that there wasn't as much friction between SOJ and SOA, as much as there was between Tom Kalinske and everyone else lol. SOJ CEO from the Dreamcast era, Shoichiro Irimajiri, says that Kalinske wasn't making a whole lot of money in that market during the latter-half of his time as SOA CEO, and that a lot of time and resources were spent on nothing. He was given from 1995 to launch the Saturn and restructure the company, and by 96, no restructuring had happened, and so Kalinske was out. Plus, what success they did have in America was still beneficial to the Japanese branch, since SOA bought hardware off SOJ, and then passed some of the profit from American sales onto the Japanese, so SOJ had little to no reason to view the US branch with any sense of envy or contempt for their success, since US success was Japan's success too. Also I would've loved to have covered the PAL/UK side of things as well, especially being a PAL-dweller myself, but I just wanted to dispel the main myths around the system first and foremost, which means America. Perhaps I'll do that another time though, that would be a really interesting deep-dive for sure.

Great video. I'm not sure if there is a term for it but I feel like there is a lot memory "retcon" that occurs with the Saturn (and endless other things). By that I mean a narrative that develops after the fact that people start then pretending was the prevailing sentiment at the time. I feel like I had a very unique situation in that both my best friend and myself had launch year Saturns and then Playstations in rural U.S. We were the only two people in our school that we know of who had Saturns. In the real world from the perspective of two 12 year olds who had both consoles: 1. The Saturn's 3D performance blew us away. I think the most compelling game was actually Panzer Dragoon. It truly felt like something other worldly and the future of gaming and the Saturn did that first. 2. There was no feeling of notable graphical superiority from the PS1 in those early days. We had some cross platform titles like Tomb Raider and of course competing titles like Tekken and Virtual Fighter. Did we recognize and discuss differences in graphics? Of course, but it was more often that each console just did things differently and it rarely impacted our impression of playability. 3. The biggest failure of the Saturn to us 12 year olds in the U.S. was by far the limited library and release of games. The U.S. Saturn library still had a great list of top tier games once it was all said and done but it missed out on tons of those "pretty decent" games to fill in the gaps. After the initial batch of launch games it was more than TWO MONTHS before ANY other game came out. I don't mean a top tier game. I mean ANY game lol. You got Panzer Dragoon and Virtua Fighter (and Pebble Beach Golf Links lol, thanks dad) and then two and half months later you got Bug...and then a few more weeks and Myst. That's 3 months after launch and you only had two new games to pick from, neither of which were at the top of anyone's list lol.

I’ve had the same argument for years when people always say that it wasn’t made for 3d games all these people seem to forget about Sega in the arcade and all those awesome 3-D games that they made in the arcade. They have plenty of experience in 3-D games and 3-D hardware. Also that Sony classic moment of “mic dropping” the price makes me cringe so much. Just like when they said the ps4 wouldn’t need to be always online. They were just following trends to optimize making money and capitalizing on mistakes made by sega and Xbox. It’s easy when you follow trends to make these decisions but when you are creating or leading an eco system it’s harder. Sony isn’t doing this stuff to be good to gamers they just are in it to make money like everyone else

There was an extra chip added last minute, it wasn't a VDP, it was a 2nd SH-2 processor. Early dev kits /debuggers only supported 1 SH-2 processor which explains why so many early Saturn games didn't tap into the 2nd CPU,. because it was a late add-on to help with the 3-D, not that Saturn couldn't do 3-D. The biggest mistake was probably that part of the development which meant Saturn left the get with a distinct disadvantage when half its CPU available to it wasn't tapped by many games.
