Great Video Roy, I am currently in the process of building my first real "Profesional"/working studio in Mexico. It is a huge challenge deciding on gear because everything costs so much more here due to 16% import tax and retail markup. I love Warm Audio but i think I am going to go with the DIY Recording Equipment 500 series 1073 clones. 500 bucks for a great rep seems hard to beat! have you any experience with the diy kits from them?

So I'm confused. Can I ask two things? So, Isnt there a way to set the Bias of an Amp with just the Multimeter, without having to use bias probes? Like with just using your regular multimeter probes? Because when I tried biasing my 900 for the first time, I had some help, and I just remember having to have the black probe on the chassis, and touching the red probe to a leg of a certain resistor, or the bias test point, and then setting the bias until I got a certain reading on the MM. Like within the recommended bias number as per Marshall, and then I made small tweaks while playing to decide where I wanted it. Second, so is using bias probes just a more in depth elaborate way to bias the amp, or a way to get a better average if tubes are not matched or something? So the process is, If your using those Bias Probes, are you just getting the plate voltage first(with the normal MM probes), then sticking the bias probe in one of the Sockets with the tube in the bias probe, doing the math, and then setting the bias trim pot, while that same tube is in the bias probe, and then thats it? That's what I don't get, because it seems odd to me that you only need to use the Bias Probe with one tube, but then if you do for some reason use it with every tube, and each tube reads different, or is unmatched, then how do you set it since theres only one trim pot? You just take an average of all the tube bias readings first? Like what I mean is say you set the bias to 44 with the first tube, and then go to the second tube and it's not 44, how can you set it to 44, without the other one drifting? Also, don't you need to get the plate voltages for all the different tube sockets? I guess so I'm not confusing you by babbling, Im just confused, because in the video it looks like you are getting the PV off one socket, putting the probe in one socket, getting a Bias reading, doing the math, and then setting the Bias while the bias probe is in that same socket/tube, and thats all there is to it.

Loved the video, even though I can't take some of the preamp talk seriously with the "controlled low end" etc. Especially after watching some great interface reviews that show that almost all modern, even cheap, preamps and ADCs are super linear with extremely low distortion.
@roycox441524 күн бұрын
i absolutely found the same thing and thought there were absolutely no differences in any preamps, etc. Then i added a set of the capi vp25 preamps and the difference in the fullness of the kick drum outside microphone was vastly different between the capi and the presonus built in preamps i was using at the time. There are a lot of preamps where i cant tell the difference, some preamps i cant tell the difference unless its compiled with a bunch of tracks together like with an entire kit recorded with the audient preamps and then the the capi. Again a big difference in tone to me. Then there are preamps where i absolutely couldn't tell the difference at all. There is definitely a reason that foo fighters track through the old neve board rather than off the shelf interface preamps. The difference is that the interfaces nowadays all track really well so in many cases there isnt a huge need to have higher end preamps unless those minor differences matter to you.

A very informative guide. But, we have the trem wired to the screw inside the body. So where does it ground to after that? Because as far as I can see, though the trem is connected to that screw, collectively they're not grounded to anything. 🤔 Did I miss something?

It’s connected to the ground wiring that goes from pot to pot in the electronics and the final point is to the top of the volume pot.

@roycox4415 Thanks SO much for your video. I have two issues: one is that for the umptheenth time my middle tone pot somehow is a volume and sometimes the volume is constant on. Now this didn’t just happen once but it’s a recurring mistake. I followed the video step by step. Could you please tell me how my tone pot could falsely become a volume pot for neck and middle instead of tone? I have soldered middle tab of tone pot to first tab plastic side of switch and third tab tone pot grounded to top of very pot sharing the leg for the capacitor (that goes to the bridge tone pot; bridge tone works!). I also jumped tab 1-2 on the switch like you say in the video - how could the middle tone pot suddenly be a volume? Pickups work, volume works, bridge tone works but the middle tone pot is now a volume for neck and middle pups… any help is greatly appreciated
@SixStringJoy2 ай бұрын
So the problem is with the capacitor connection from first to second tone pot somehow idk why. In my world logic would dictate that if I connect the same tab of a tone pot to the respective pickup it would be a tone pot - that works for the bridge just fine. But once the tone pot is added to that equation all kinds of weird things happen. I took out the capacitor and now I have no tone pot for some reason but everything else works…. Idk 🤦♂️

Wow. And just like that I went from not knowing a single thing about what goes on inside the electronics of a Strat, to thinking I might be able to wire one up. Very clear and methodical explanation!!! My only question is what is the function of the capacitor. Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge with us.

I don't know if you were referring to Rene Martinez (Stevie Ray Vaughan's tech) or not, but it's funny because his first tech was a guy named Cesar Diaz who was both famous and infamous at the same time. He has since passed, but he did some great things such as making and modding amps, making pedals and such, but he was known to do some things that drew a lot of criticism also. Things such as using WD-40 on pots, which most techs consider a no-no, and being pretty outspoken about doing things that are now considered blasphemous.
@roycox44159 күн бұрын
That’s exactly who I was referring to. He must have been quite good at what he did but I think he had a lot of weird habits that are now seen as “do not dos”. You’re right!

Super helpful video Roy, many thanks from this newbie! Could you talk briefly about input power conditioning if you do any of that? Thanks!
@roycox44159 күн бұрын
There are two main power conditioner units in the rack. Both are 8 input furmans. The best thing about these is the stable power levels they help keep but also making it much easier to turn on and off a bunch of the rack mounted pieces by only turning on those two units. I really believe that power conditioners are essential.

I listened to that beat in the car for hours after the session, pre mix and I was amazed at the clarity of a raw mix. I'd heard vintage Neve and SSL 9K also but the API made an impression I'll never forget.

While the effect may be the same for what capacitors do...affect the ratio of high to low tones that get output...your explanation is backwards. "Caps" act as high pass filters. The high frequencies passed do not vary with different value caps. What changes is the low frequency cutoff level...thus, the amount of low & mid range frequencies that are cut off. In other words, the output varies, with different value caps, from a wide mix of frequencies, to mostly high frequencies (smaller value cap). Thus, the higher value cap (as large as close to .1 will cut out the least mid & bass range frequencies...whereas the lowest value cap (say, .001) will allow only the highest frequencies to pass. The most common values used are : .015, .022, .033, .047, .065 but higher are lower values are available. (...values in "micro farads")

The Sonarworks Plugin with the Fixed Curve Profile has always to be running in the background, if i quit Sonarworks i get the normal "untreated" sound again, right? I have the Sonarworks reference with the Mic here, but still kinda figure things out and also building more absorbers, Basstraps etc to get the most out of it. Thanks for the Video, very interesting suggestions! Great video! For studio, the Remo Powerstroke 3 Coated will be great, but an impact patch will extend the durability more. If I’m doing a hard rock and metal band gig, (Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC), the Remo Pinstripe or Evans EMAD Heavyweight will be perfect. If I’m doing a jazz band gig (Nat King Cole), then maybe the Ambassador Coated or Fiberskyn Ambassador. If it’s a punk rock gig (Green Day, The Ramones), the Remo Powerstroke 4 or Evans EMAD 2 will be great for that. If I’m doing a classic rock gig, (Led Zeppelin, Boston, Queen, Pink Floyd), the Emperor Coated will be great. It all depends on my personal preference, the genres of music and the durability I want

How do you connect the XLR input from the microphone to the patch bay?
@roycox44153 ай бұрын
You aren’t connecting your microphone directly to the patch bay, you are connecting it to a preamp first. Some patch bays can actually be xlr patch bays but in most cases you will connect your microphone to a preamp that is wired into your patch bay, not directly to the patch bay itself. In my case I have stage boxes on the floor that are wired to the patch bay. My mics get plugged into whatever preamp I want to use via the floor boxes and then the floor xlr stage boxes are wired to the preamp inputs in my patch bay.
