Do you only use potato’s for fiddle tunes or do people also use them to kick off (idk what to call them) tunes like John Henry, Long Journey Home kinda tunes?
@HayesGriffin4 күн бұрын
Mostly for fiddle tunes, but they’ll work in a pinch for songs/vocal tunes like the ones you mentioned. There are 3 standard kickoff phrases that you would use for songs/vocal tunes. Guess I’d better record a lesson… 😆

I'm from Spain, I love Old Time and Bluegrass and I wish one day to go to Steve Kaufman Camp. I play the american guitar (steel string) where's here people mainly play Spanish Nylon guitar. This Camp Looks like a really fun and enriching experience! Sadly, I d'ont have the resources to do such a trip and my english is not good enough (I think).
@HayesGriffin4 күн бұрын
There are some Spanish speakers around! Would love to see you there in the future 😊

@@HayesGriffin Good news! Maybie in 2026 I will go to the camp! Or 2027! And if there are some Spanish speakers there that can help me with the language barrier better! I'm studying English, but in a slow pace. Thank you for the video!!

This Blue 3rd lesson unlocked the front door to Bluegrass. Before this I could only play G-C-D rhythm and a simple G run. The examples had me up and running in minutes... playing lines over all three chords. Thanks to 50% video speed, I have learned to play most of Solo 2 and I'm having a blast!

What is their definition of "traditional fiddle tune?" Would something that's considered a Celtic fiddle tune or an old-time fiddle tune be disqualified if it might not be considered part of the bluegrass genre? Let's say I played Abe's Retreat (I don't know of any bluegrass albums with that tune on them). Would they say, "Well, that's more of an old-timey tune, so we should toss it." Or are they pretty lenient as long as it sounds like something that would be in the bluegrass genre? Thanks!
@HayesGriffin21 күн бұрын
Our judges will be lenient especially if the tune is traditional/public domain, even if it’s more old time or Irish. I think the main issues are just no vocal tunes, etc.
