Boromir was no more a bad guy than Sméagol was. Both are driven by forces most have never had to nor ever will. Boromir has the pressure of being the captain of Gondor and under the eye of a father who expects much from him. Sméagol was stricken with an addiction far worse than any could imagine. Boromir only saw the ring as a tool to help his people, he’s a good man driven to desperate measures, any of us could fall into such a perilous trap.

Boromir never wanted the ring for power alone he wanted it to keep the realms of men safe but the ring would only bring ruin though he didnt know it. Boromir thought of his people above everything else even in as the ring corrupted him with sweet promices.

He bodies courage, nobility, and caring for those under his protection. And with all of that, he not only accepts aragorn but encourages him to be king. Great man and great actor who plays him.

Boromir has always been a good man. Its just that circumstance had everything stacked against him. His father was constantly putting entirely too much on him, all whilst he tried to get Denethor to notice Faramir like a good elder brother. When he gets to Rivendel and becomes a member of the Fellowship, everyone is constantly shooting down his suggestions. Boromir was used to being Captain. Used to saying something, giving orders and people snapping to. And if they didn't do that, they would at least listen and then tell him why they wouldn't do that. Combined that the man he stood beside was meant to be King of Gondor and yet seemed to want absolutely nothing to do with the city he loved, and having the Ring poking and prodding at his insecurities, made it so he was corrupted; even momentarily; by the Ring. Boromir is the perfect example of how the Ring can corrupt even the best of us. He was a good man, with strong, noble principles, who loved his City, which had bled against the Forces of Darkness for decades. Man deserved so much more.

Boromir had a good soul, and he did not crave the ring for his own gain, instead he wished to protect his people by using it. He wasn't truly corrupted by it, instead he was tricked by it.

Came just to say Boromir is a good man almost all of the time. That’s the point of the ring it corrupts and turns good into evil. Then I stayed to watch my favorite character in LOTR who’s name isn’t Tom or Bill. “Actually being a good man” you’re a dick and you’re dumb.

yes its precisely because he's a good man that he was corrupted so easily. he wanted to change the world more than anyone, and thats what the ring abused.

No one has ever claimed that Boromir wasnt a good man. And anyone who has or thinks he wasnt a good man was missing the point. The ring was supposed to represent temptation, a temptation of power. And most men, even many of the best men fall short and would eventually be seduced for a variety of reasons. Even Gandalf explained that he himself would have been seduced by its power if Frodo had given him the ring. The main difference between Aragorn and Boromir when it came to the ring was that Boromir had felt soo duty bound to Gondor and his father that he saw the ring as a means to save his people. Aragorn on the other hand, never had such attachments and had been raised primarily by the elves who were less tempted by power than men who were known to desire power.

Borimir is the epitome of the golden boy burnout who had a whole bunch of pressure thrust on him at a young age, when all he wanted was to be allowed to be one of the guys. And he managed to find ways to do that within his role.

Boromir’s relationship with Merry and Pippin was absolutely precious. I don’t know if it was in the book but it’s one of my favorite things in the movies! He was like their protective big brother and he gave his life in an attempt to save them 😢 Edit: unrelated but the way Legolas walks over the snow while the others have to dig through it always makes me laugh 😂

Boromir and Faramir are two faces of the same coin. Desperation/Hope. The Ring can feed on desperation and reinforce its hold, but it can't suck hope out. That's also why Sam was less prone to be affected, he was just a simple, hopeful dude. (I know Frodo wore the Ring much longer, but Sam had it for a while 'in Mordor, the cradle of evil'.

watching lotr as a teenager as a Faramir stan: "ugh Boromir he just doesn't GET it like the others in the Felowship do, smh, the Ring is Bad ok, it obviously can't be used to SAvE gOnDor" watching lotr in my thirties as a Boromir stan: "Yes well Elrond this here uh (checks notes) *fellowship* thing is very nice and all, but tell me, what percent of Rivendell's defense budget will be used to support Gondor's war efforts holding back the forces of Mordor? None? That's what I thought"

As Aragorn says in the book, while Gondor was holding in the south, there was plenty of Orc's and Evil Men in the North that the Northern Dunedain and Elves of Lindon & Rivendell had to contend with. Also Boromir in the books doesn't even ask for weapons or money (Elves don't even have that sort of economy its more of a keep what you make/get from the King) he came to Rivendell for Knowledge, to quote Boromir himself: '‘In this evil hour I have come on an errand over many dangerous leagues to Elrond: a hundred and ten days I have journeyed all alone. But I do not seek allies in war. The might of Elrond is in wisdom not in weapons, it is said. I come to ask for counsel and the unravelling of hard words. '

@@Jsay18 all fair points! I was trying to indicate the priorities of a viewer change as you age and that Boromir comes off better to an older audience who can better understand his character. Sort of like that old meme where teens think Legolas is attractive, college students think Aragon is attractive, and adults know that Sam is by far the most attractive, because the qualities prioritized in a romantic partner change drastically at different points in life.

One thing about the movies i wish they added in was more characters acknowledging boromirs death. Gandalf, Theoden and Eomer all have something to say about it. Even the uruk hai seem to use the fact they killed him as a boast against the rohirrim around the time merry and pippin make their escape into fangorn. If i recall correctly, even some of the regular gondorians had things to say. Ah well
