You’re supposed to cook it at least six hours on high. It makes the meat very tender. Also don’t take the lid off until the six hours are up. A crockpot works by trapping heat. Every time you open it, it loses heat.

I am not sure about the reason for using a crock pot if it is done in 4 hours. I cook mine for about 10-12 hours on low.

My mom’s secret ingredient for stews was Dijon mustard. I would also put a tablespoon of two of that into this stew. It looks good - I want to give this a try! It is still cold and rainy here in almost April (Northern California ).

Damn! This looks awesome. I was a little skeptical when you put the taters in 1st, but when you precooked them, you had me curious. I think I'll use whole milk instead of sour cream, but when you topped it with the french fried onions, that's what sealed the deal for me. I never thought to use them on a tater tot casserole! Awesome idea. Can't wait to try this.

I was told that if you put a can of cream of mushroom soup and a can of whole potatoes on the bottom of the pot then, add 2 lbs. of stew meat and repeat the mushroom soup and potatoes on the top for 8 hours, and don't do nothing, it will be tender and delicious. Do you think this will be delicious? I am concerned about the mushroom soup not being enough liquid. I would appreciate your input.

when you coat the beef in the flour , then brown it off in a large pan it gives the meat alot more flavour , then put in the slow cooker , deglaze the pan with your stock and pour in slow cooker

My beef stew is similar ingredients. but the cooking technique is completely different. I start with onions and celery and sweat them in a sauté pan with clarified butter, add garlic, fresh thyme, fresh oregano, a bay leaf, salt and pepper and sauté until the garlic is just starting to brown. then deglaze with sherry wine. and add the whole thing to a Dutch oven. then i clean the sauté pan, add some additional clarified butter and start getting it extremely hot, take your meat, season all sides with salt and pepper, then dreg it in flower. add it to the sauté pan sever peace's at a time, browning all sides and then adding them to the Dutch oven, then in the same pan, sauté some use button mushrooms, until the water just cooks out of them, deglaze with sherry wine one more time, and add it to the Dutch oven. add small can of V8 juice (i like it better than tomato juice or crushed tomatoes). and some beef broth or better than bullion and water which ever works for you. and then put it in the oven at 300 degrees for about an hour. then add the carrots and potatoes, put it back in the oven and cook it until the potatoes and carrots are soft. usually, an hour and a half to two hours. finally, About 5 minutes before you are ready to server it, add some frozen peas. let it sit int the over for 5 more minutes until the peas are cooked al dente. then I like to server it in a sour dough bread bowl. or with some fresh French bread. one of my favorite dishes to cook in fall or winter.
