Watching Jurassic Park made reading the book so much easier to comprehend all the technical jargon, I was only 13 when the movie came out and had zero knowledge of splicing dna etc

I watched the movies first and then read the books. I do this for all adaptations now. If I read the book first then I’ll focus on characters not matching their descriptions, plot points being left out, etc. However, if I watch the movie first and I like it then it’s a good movie, and reading the book afterwards will be enjoyable because I get more detail and I’ll still like the movie because I’ll be able to give the adaptation more grace.

You are not familiar with the creature that is King, but let me tell you that he wrote "Misery" as an insult to his loyal readers whom he believed were "imprisoning" him and keeping him a horror writer! Thirty years after it and him STILL having failed to write "the great American literary novel," and no doubt he still blames the fans who made him rich and famous! Best book of last month was a toss-up between Richard Wright's 1940s novel "The Man Who Lived Underground" and Robert Stone's 1980s "Children of Light." Least was John Williams' "Nothing But the Night," but it was not "least" by much and was still pretty interesting.

If you run out of Agatha Christie I recommend you try solving John Dickson Carr novels! He was a contemporary of Christie, writing in broadly the same tradition, but using different approaches to surprise you.

Not remembering Arwen is not on you. She's not a huge character in the books, which is kinda disappointing. I'm glad Peter Jackson gave her a bigger part in the movies.

Never been called a “Ringer.” Thats a new thing I guess. Read the books before the movie because the movies didn’t exist when I read them. Though I did see the animated Hobbit movie when I was very young. I would also like to add that the reasons the hobbits were actually chosen to carry the ring that because they were not really powerful people. The ring didn’t really have the same effect over them as it would’ve had over the more powerful people. Boramir is it very honorable man. He is also a very strong and powerful man, strangely, that is why the ring affected him so badly.

Excellent taste from your dad, "The Alchemist" is a fine, classic-style book don't listen to its naysayers!! 👍 By the same token you must read "Crime and Punishment" which will give you a different view of the world as any Dostoyevsky will, as you already know from "Brothers Karamazov." That was Dostoyevsky's pinnacle just before he died, so "Crime and Punishment" and all else of his will be somewhat less taxing. Save those other, entertainment books for when you want light stuff maybe late at night. 👍

In my opinion, books from authors that are very descriptive, can be daunting. I have to shift into a different mental pacing so I don't just skip over the two pages describing the entrance to a forest. If I can accomplish this feat I enjoy the work so much more.

I read the Lord of the Rings when I was in junior high. At first I was disappointed because there was no romance, but very soon I got caught up in the adventure. I enjoy all the descriptions and frequently look at the maps. Re the Hobbit, sometimes life doesn’t go as planned and we get swept up into something more complex and difficult than we expected.

None of this is True 😅 is big oof energy lol If you’re scared to just go straight to blonde you could always gradually work your way up going lighter and lighter each time until you get the shade of blonde you want. Also some ppl’s hair can’t lighten but so much without harsh chemicals so just something to keep in mind.

It was 1965, I was fifteen, the cover looked fascinating, I took it along on a hundred mile canoe trip in West Virginia - every morning before launch, every lunch break, every evening - the hobbits' journey and our journey merged together. Twenty-five complete readings of the trilogy later, Peter Jackson made his wonderful adaptation on the big screen.
