Never saw this 2 years ago when you posted it up so coming to it really late and you probably won't see the comments now but - yes the weather and seastates in the North Sea are indeed like that. This is one of the reasons why the English ships in the age of sail tended to be so ruggedly constructed - because they evolved from merchant ships that plied their trade up and down the North Sea, unlike the French ships which could be just that bit more lightly built.

If you're on a 90° attack course like in your example, just bring your periscope to 0 and set AOB to 90 degrees, since you already know the ship will be at 90 passing your 0. Then bring the gyro to both 0 by turning your scope and you know the bearing your torps should leave the tubes. This easy way I sank ships from a distance of 1km to 1,5km in the thickest fog without even seeing them. Just wait until it reaches the perfect shooting angle according to the gyro. All you need to get right is the speed, as it's the most important factor.

I can't for the life of me remember how to listen to the hydrophones manually. I started SHIII back when it came.out mid 2000's but stopped long ago. Now a days I struggle with ship identification.

One of the patches to the .exe introduces these duds. It simulates any problem with setting the torpedo at 25 meters depth. So each year there is a certain percentage of dud. if you set torpedoes to run below the depth from wind speed, that percentage is flat out the chance torpedoes will run 25 meters deep. This simulates all sorts of failures, but the developer uses the 25 meter depth to fail the shot. Separately from that is the usual SH3 failure where torpedoes blow up earlier, bounce off the hull, magnetic pistol failing to arm and etc. So if failure is 20% and windspeed is 7, at 2.8 meters and below you get 20% failure rate. At 0 meters depth you get 98% failure. Between 0 and 2.8 meters running depth it will be a line between 98% and 20%. so at 1.4 meters you will get a failure in the middle between 98% and 20%, or about 60%. If you shoot a torpedo slightly above the depth given in the table it will ave a little higher dud rate, but usual practice is to shoot under the value given.

Ha! Sometimes all they need is a little nudge. I’ve never known the flak gun to do much to ships, tried it once when I had a ship limping away. No torpedoes left, no cannon shells left… but i ran out of flak ammo, and she refused to go down as I sailed away.

I have GWX installed and I do not have the angle of bow and target clipboard in upper right. Do you know why?

Nice start on your career. A late comment. you needed to get closer for your torpedo shots. No escorts no planes. get in closer! 1000 meters is perfect. 1200 m at maximum. Would have avoided the misses. Also for shooting with the flak gun, get a lot closer. Like 1000 m. The shots were spraying all over the place. However I don't think the damage model allow to get holes in the hull with a 20 mm.

What mods are you using for the charts of knots, distance, and time traveled? Or is that the vanilla version of this game? If so i cant find them. Beginner here 😅

I like to dive to 25 metres for sound checks, especially if the weather is rough. I've never used the compass method to plot target distance over time, just guesstimated and eyeballed it. I look foreward to trying your method next time I play. My current game is the "onealex" supermod, based on GWX; a much more challenging and realistic version compared to unmodded SH3. I'm currently on involuntary "shore leave" as I am at home, recovering from major surgery. I am using this bunk time to view SH3 videos. Thanks for your work.

I taught myself trig/nav, etc doing manual solutions with protractors on the screen and operations on notepads. No TDC. In game TDC seemed to be more of a dice roll than an actual physical computation...

You say that it's tedious and boring cuz you can't see the target. I disagree. To hunt and sink a target you never saw has its own rewards.

hello great series thank you. was thinking try 3or 4 but I wonder which one if not using mods. is it necessary to use mods on SH3 and 4? Are they buggy or what the mods fix , only the graphics or gameplay too? Also graphics play some role also but heard that 5 is not that great or is it if using the mods?

Hey, Just wanted to say I've just started playing silent hunter and this has been AMAZINGLY useful. I've been eyeballing all my torpedoes and hit maybe 1 in 6, I tried all the guides but couldn't do it, but you have dissected it in just the right way that I understand it now!
