I love homemade dog food but it is now extremely hard for me to cook for my dog because she was recently diagnosed with early kidney disease, and this means that most recipes you find online won’t work for her since she needs low phosphorus in her food.

I've been reading a couple wholistic veterinarian nutritionist's books and their recipes for a balanced diet include carbohydrates from Oats, Buckwheat, lentils... Why do you believe this is not required? Can you explain your educational background that you're basing this balanced diet from? I'm not trying to be argumentative; I'm just find so many different ideas as to what is "balanced". Thank you!

We feed my bulldog half taste of the wild grain free recipe and half meat (chicken, beef, ground turkey) and he seems to do very well. We originally were doing 100% raw from a company called Darwin’s, it was ok but he wasn’t as muscular and his digestive system was unpredictable, even though they said raw would help with that. We moved to the 50/50 recipe with taste of the wild kibble and meat and now his digestive system is wayyyyy better, solid poops, minimal farts, overall way better for us. He also doesn’t have red skin nearly as much before. We give him supplements and vitamins to ensure we fill in any nutrient deficiency that he otherwise wouldn’t get. Over all I would say it comes down to experimenting and finding out what works for you , your budget. And your dog of course. Originally we had tried a brand called Royal Canine , we seen a bulldog on the bag and had thought it would be good for him, WRONG. He ultimately ended up getting bumps all over his body. Moral of the story , it’s what works for your dog at the end of the day

I feel so guilty. 45 years ago, I got a little six month old puppy, and I fed him Moist and Meaty ultra-processed, semi-moist, feed-grade dog food for his entire short life of only eight short years. It wasn't the cheapest dog food in the grocery store, so I thought I was feeding him a better quality dog food. But I have made mistakes with every dog since that have lead to health problems, starting with the homemade diet I made for my second dog. Homemade isn't necessarily the best, if it's made with the wrong ingredients, or made the wrong way, or lacks any variety. The recipe I used was supposed to meet AAFCO standards, but she went blind from not enough taurine. My third dog, I fed her all organic homemade dog food, but she died prematurely of bladder cancer caused from arsenic from the organic brown rice I used in her dog food. I fed her entirely organic. What could be wrong with organic? Lots, apparently. I'm four years into my current three dogs, trying my best to give them the best possible diet, and I've made mistake after mistake after mistake. I just recently learned from your Forever Dog Life book how to figure out the carb amount in dog food, and discovered that I was feeding one of my dogs, who has an amylase deficiency, a higher carb food, labeled for carnivores, and actually has more carbs than any of the foods I feed my other two dogs. And what's worse, I discovered that several brands that I've been using with them, the percentages add up to 100 without including the carbs, or add up to over 100% in one case. What is with the dishonesty of pet food manufacturers, even some that are highly recommended as top quality dog food brands? But the homemade food I've made for them has had just as many mistakes. Now, all three dogs at four years of age, have health issues in spite of my best efforts. My dogs eat better than I do. But they still aren't getting the perfect diet for their needs, apparently.

How do we know which kibble is best when I don’t know the meaning of the words on the ingredients? And why is it when I go to my vet and ask about homemade dog because it’s healthy and they always recommend Purina, iams, or science diet?

Rodney is holding up a bag of Honest Kitchen when Karen is discussing the dehydrated companies that are blending previously dehydrated and then processing again. I stopped using Honest Kitchen for 3 reasons: 1) Not on Susan Thixton's "The List" which is her vetted list of companies who can prove their human grade ingredient sources with receipts; 2) My dogs really don't like any of the Honest Kitchen formulas and their newer, nugget formulation made all three of them barf; 3) They use Sodium Selenite as an unnatural selenium source not allowed in human foods because it has a very narrow range of safety. The form of Honest Kitchen with dehydrated greens and meat flakes mixed together with a lot of dust settlement on the bottom of the bag indicates a problem with homogeneity and if that Sodium Selenite is not perfectly, equally distributed on that fodder then how is the narrow window of safe concentration controlled? For that matter, how are any of the other potentially dangerous supplements (dangerous if fed in too high a concentration) kept homogeneously distributed in that bag (copper, vitamin D, vitamin A, iron)??????

Another consideration needs to be addressed and that is copper content. Unfortunately, the human grade, all natural fresh frozen and freeze dried raw balanced and grinds are tending to have way too much copper. This is because ungulate liver and also heart contains a lot of copper and when in the recipe at a level higher than would be found in prey, has too much endogenous copper. Compounding that issue is that most of these companies then dump in copper chelate even in the ungulate liver containing formulas. Please pay attention to the copper and make sure that you rotate ungulate liver containing recipes with poultry liver recipes and/or no liver containing recipes. I'm finding the copper to be 5 to 11 fold over AAFCO minimum in most of these recipes. This is a concern given that there are veterinary experts that are saying that AAFCO should establish a maximum for copper that is only 2 fold over the AAFCO minimum. I try to rotate the higher copper ungulate recipes with poultry formulas from brands that do not add copper chelate to any of their formulas. Karen and Rodney, please start talking about copper too.
