If you have a greenhouse you can use them to absorb heat during the day to keep your plants a bit warmer for longer at night. Or ive seen them used in a home built barbeque.

That is a great idea!! I’ll recommend that to people from now on 👍

Hi, do we have to take any special precautions when it comes to disposing of stones? Or is taking it to a local recycling center enough? Thanks

I took the bricks to the local recycling centre. They’re rubble at the end of the day. Not sure whether some have begun charging for this now though…

When I had a smart meter installed, I insisted they fitted a cutout switch at the same time, and they did, free of charge. They also replaced the fuse seals which I broke some 10 years previous, and nobody said anything. 😊

Hi Stuart, yes, I think there is a grey area where the public are concerned... it's more a regulation that I feel I must follow as I am a "professional", following the IET Wiring Regulations is a statutory requirement but not law.However, touching the main cut out or pulling the fuse is illegal, but would it be more of a civil matter... I am not 100% on the rule of law :) I do know that some electricians will pull the main fuse to cut the power but I just won't, it doesn't cost much to do things properly so long as you're organised and let the DNO know when you want them there, our DNO is very punctual! Those seals that you "can't buy"... can be bought on a certain selling website where lots of other bits and pieces are sold and distributed ;)

The Colin wood are crap , I have been called back six times in eight months to replace them because they just stopped working.

Hi Sean, I've not had this issue and I've installed quite a few of them. Another reason I use Collingwood though is their Customer Service, it is really good and they're very helpful. They're sending me out two new dimmable light drivers for other lights I've installed as my wholesaler sold me the wrong ones, free of charge! **they are not paying me anything by the way, just my experience!

In America we have no idea what a storage heater is! The idea of using low cost electricity to create heat is a great idea but the heat is to keep the house warm during the day. Most folks are not at home during the day and want their house to be toasty warm at night? I'm not getting this storage heater thing at all? When we lived in the UK we has forced air, just one blood vent to heat the whole house I recall :) Way ahead of our time, I believe new construction in th 70s but don't recall any vents going to bedrooms!

Just one vent... Yeah, I am not sure how and when storage heaters came about but logic dictates that they were created to ease heating bills... in the UK we used to have "off-peak" electricity and so the heaters were on at night during these off-peak hours and then during the day you turn them on and they heat the house without using peak rate electricity... now however, these tariffs have largely gone.

@@spellerssparks the tariffs are all still there. In fact there's probably more of them now to charge EVs overnight from renewables and nuclear. I'm on E7 and the night units are about 1/3 of the price of day units. I use a programmable high heat retention storage heater to keep the charge for later on in the day when I need it.

Any experience with quantum? Comparing with the cheaper creda like you installed... i am a sparx too but haven't installed any of the newer heaters and have heard not good things about the controls... ???? 🤔👌👌
@spellerssparks
@spellerssparks 7 ай бұрын
Hi Nick, no afraid not - however I've not had any complaints about the controls with the Creda models and presumably with the Quantum, by Dimplex, they have to be similar because I believe Dimplex make heaters for Creda? They're one and the same aren't they? Surely being the more expensive brand the controls should be even better!! With older customers I will generally have to help set up the timings etc, but with many of my customers being local I am happy to go back and help if needed - once they're set though I don't generally hear about any issues. Hope that helps! Rich

Page 99 in the onsite guide states that it is important that installers do not recommend an upgrade or place if the existing consumer unit simply because it is old. We should be looking for Damage , ie any cracks/breaks , thermal damage signs or burning. Expose live parts. If there is none of these issues we then test to BS7671 18th edition 2018 +Am2 2022 and if all test are within the parameters set out in BS7671 then we can can sign the installation of as safe for continued service. BS 7671 in not retrospective and can not be back dated to an earlier version, ie no RCD protection on older installations does not mean a CU needs to be replaced or upgraded. Regulations are only enforced from the date that regulation came in and onwards. A installation that was installed forty years ago and is in good condition and doing its job as it was designed to do is likely to last another forty years.

Hi there, Thanks for the comment! Yes, I do agree, all Consumer Units were installed to the regulations of the time and are still safe. However, as I think I have tried to say in the video the older Consumer Units just don't protect as well as the newer Consumer Units will. I do mention that it is only ever a "recommendation" and that you're still here so I am sure the circuits etc are safe, however, there is no other way of putting it really. I could say the consumer unit is outdated and doesn't protect you as well as an RCBO or AFDD will, which is the same as saying I recommend it. If we, as electricians, don't spell out the safety features of newer units, then I don't think we're doing our jobs. I will always explain to customers that they're still here even though this is an older unit. As you're also aware, we can't make alterations to a circuit without an RCD, so we have to recommend either an upfront RCD or BS 7288 OR a new Consumer Unit will future proof for any alterations. My point was just to say that older consumer units won't be in a position to detect the break down of appliances, and I mention a customer whose cooker blew a hole in here saucepan and this is why she upgraded her Consumer Unit - the fuse wire didn't have time to blow and the Main Fuse blew first... so the Consumer Unit was useless in the instance anyway! There were also signs of arcing on lighting fuse carrier. If you feel I could put in a better way I can put in a note that just states this more clearly? Cheers! Rich

I've just read P.99 of the OSG... "it's important installers do not advise the replacement of CU's if they do not comply with current regs of BS 7671" - agree with you, and I am not doing this. I am telling my customers that they complied with the regulations at the time and are safe for continued use - only that I recommend change if you want added protection and alterations to circuits where no RCD protection exists.

I didn’t mean to suggest you were. I was just make a point. About what is safe and what isn’t. But I’m sure you will agree that there are some sparks out there doing CU changes or upgrades for no real reason but to bust there profit. As specially after doing and EICR . They see an old rewirble fuse box and there eyes light up with pound signs . But what do I know I’m just a grumpy old spark whose opinion means nothing.😂

@@Dog-whisperer7494 well, your opinion matters to me! Thanks for highlighting it, and yes I agree. I will always say to customers that their CU is not "illegal" as I've heard customers saying that other electricians have said it is... and even after doing an EICR, by regulation, I have to state that it's "unsatisfactory" due to not having RCD protection I will always highlight that this is due to current regulations and not because their installation is "unsafe"! Cheers!

Help needed if you wouldn't mind. I was replacing one element and took the front off to take elements out now I can't remember which wire goes on what. I have 3 browns and 3 purple can you help. Thanks in advance

Hello, it’s hard to be really sure without looking, but generally speaking it sounds like you have 3 live and 3 neutrals and these will need to be connected to the correct terminals to avoid polarity issues… most Storage Heaters will need to be earthed too, but this is probably earthed via the casing of the unit… in future, and I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, take a photo of any wiring before disconnecting
@spellerssparks
@spellerssparks 11 ай бұрын
I should have mentioned that the brown will be live and the purples (or blue would be neutral) - hopefully this will be indicated on the new elements ie “live” and “neutral”. These will then connect up - also try to ensure that the earth is connected up too!!
