We’ve had the same issues with the grim reapers not opening my buddy heart shot a buck and only one wing opened. I’ve started using wasp jackhammer 1 3/4” and have had luck so far. Great video!

I have heard many good things about Grim Reaper broadheads and was confused by the fact that it took the deer 20 minutes to die. So, I reached out to Grim Reaper and the following is their response, which makes a lot of sense.. HI Doug Thanks for reaching out. I have actually watched this video/review before. I will be happy to give you a few thoughts and if you would like to call me id be happy to discuss further. I have shot more animals with our pro 1 3/8’” 3 blade than probably about anyone out there so I definitely have a lot of experience as well as thoughts regarding its performance. It is my favorite and most reliable mechanical of all time. First- his speculation that the head opened on the exit side is completely ignorant. Our blade retention system and blade deployment is up there with the most proven of all time, well over 20 years. Our blades work on an internal spring system and leverage.. If they are installed correctly and open smoothly by hand they are fail proof and in 20 years I have never seen one not deploy upon entering. They begin opening on the contact of the hide. The entrance hole on the skin can have variance for sure depending on a lot of factors, shot placement, distance, animal, angle, and on and on but the blades are always in the process of deploying on impact and are always fully deployed going through the rib, chest cavity and exit. I’ve seen decent to great entrance holes but ALWAYS full cutting through internals and exit. The reason his deer took a while to die is because if he did hit both lungs with that steep angle he barely clipped the bottom of the second.. and definitely didn’t get the heart. Also the green stuff on his arrow indicates it was a little further back than it looked or he went through the esophagus. How long the deer lived had nothing to do with the broadhead performance and everything to do with the angle his arrow and broadhead traveled through. If that deer had been further out in the field and his angle better you would have watched it drop within seconds.. just simply a matter of what was hit and blood loss. I have killed 200 big game animals with that very broadhead and been on hundreds of other recoveries. Always comes down to shot placement and as you know with bowhunting it a game of inches. The pro 3 1 3/8 is one of the most consistent all around mechanicals ever made. If you want to discuss further I’m happy to do so. @24:30 I think you hit the esophagus too. Plenty of grass still in that at the time of the shot. Don't think you hit anything below the diaphragm. imo. Also, I made a similar bad forward shot on a buck once, as you did. I never recovered him. Little to no blood. Other hunters found the remains a few days later. I couldn't see my shot as the carcass was in bad shape at that point. You did a really good video with this topic. I believe there are so many variables in blood vessel anatomy that vary from each deer that a test of this sort is not firmly conclusive. Examining the lungs and organs upon dressing would lend more insight to the broadhead performance. All in all a great video. I have been shooting Slick Trick Magnums for several years now with no complaints. A large reason why is because I got a great deal on several 8 packs one time and still have many of the broadhead components, and 5 years later still don't need to change up. lol Good luck this season -J in Virginia. ps, totally subscribed.

So if u have hit deer in the shoulder and they have survived why keep shooting light arrow setups??Why not go heavy and build your arrow right for that sake of the animal?

Shot 4 animals in Africa with the g5 mega meats. Honestly they fly true and the damage is diabolical. Every shot was a pass through impala 77 yds, zebra 81 yds, white blesbok 66 yds, blue wilderbeast 85 yds.

why are u shooting at deer that far away with a bow no need for it i have bow hunted for fourty plus years an have never had to shoot at a deer over fifteen yards an i have a wall of giants an have shot more deer than most people see in a lifetime an i can shoot with the best of them out to sixty yards with the best of them for fun an i must say all of my deer come from public or state land

The only thing I took away from this that I didn’t already really think I knew is that there were a few shots here that would have been better served with a fixed blade. Not hating on expandables at all. I shoot them also. But certainly drives home the shot placement is king no matter what head you’re using.

if you are small, or weaker, a mechanical isnt for you. Good video. I personally like a pass through everytime with broadheads i can resharpen because i am cheap. I hate when arrows break. Its a waste, and im that much closer to having to buy another dozen, ill lose them soon enough. I also believe deer don't run as far with smaller heads and pass throughs.

I’m only on the slick trick but I hope you’re learning something with the info you’re getting out of a fixed blade. With the full pass throughs and quick deaths. That’s the thing about a sharp fixed blade, goes through so fast they dont know what happened and they just die. When the big mechanical slaps the side of them then hangs up they panic and run a lot further. Still die yes but run a lot further. But that’s anecdotal. I’ve only killed one deer with a mechanical and that was last year with the sevr 1.5. Zipped right through her, double lung but she ran 100 yards. But I’m glad you’re out doing this even though I think the broadheads worth a shit on this list are the sevr and the slicktrick 😂 good shootin!

Decent round, but highly under powered. If it was a true 10mm as you well know it should be around 1250 FPS. I have taken 37 deer and 31 wild hogs both out to 62 yards with my 10 mm from 135 grain to the thumper 230 gainers. Dead is dead, I just don't under stand Federal, Winchester and Remington, they have NEVER made a tru full power load 10 mil. But I'll stay will Buffalo Bore, Double Tapp and Underwood. Great videos keep up the good work.

The only broad head out of those I've used is the Swhacker. I've killed a younger doe at about 20 yards with the 3" and it hit that deer like a freight train. She jumped spun around and dropped on the spot. Arrow went clean through and was sticking in the ground about 4". Then I killed a big mature 9 point using another 3" Swhacker and and didn't need to track it either. Definitely slowed my speed down and had a little more arch in the arrow flight because of the weight but supper accurate and deadly. This year I got some of the new 1.5" Sevr hybrids and am going to give them a try. I've heard really good things about those G5 dead meats and your results speak for themselves.

Great video! I’ve done similar tests over the years. I shoot about 10 each year. I much prefer Swhacker #207. The straight blades are easy to sharpen. The rage have exposed sharp edges and can open in quiver. Sevr good design but very difficult to replace blades. Slick Trick easy to sharpen and sharpest out of package. Great fixed head.

This has probably been said already but the grim reapers have a similar concept to the schwackers - they go past the skin and the blades open in the cavity. So they’ll have a small entry hole and large exit hole.

@peterstilp3327 facts. We've seen all the other reviews where Sevr blows past the rest of the competition but just wanted to see what this video was about.
