After starting my scotch and bourbon journey 4 years ago (having been and irish whiskey drinker for many years), my wife still only likes bushmills white label or black bush or jameson mixed with ginger ale on ice. Which isn't horrible in the summer while grilling or something like that but my wife can't handle any whiskey neat e em at 80 proof

Yea I've been putting my wife on hard mode. I know what she likes though, lighter bodied whiskies with some citrus and sweetness that are smooth. Crazy enough she really liked Weller Antique 107...haha. But at least your wife still gives it a shot! Some people just write it off forever

Have tried a few red wine finished whiskeys (like the Margaux finished whiskey that's the subject of this review) and for me they've all been terrible. Something about the wine tannins not meshing well with the whiskey oak/vanilla/rye I think. OTOH, I've had many variations of Sauternes/Tokaji finished whiskeys (e.g. Penelope, Starlight, Far North, The Judge, etc.) and have enjoyed every one. The Coalition Sauternes finished variation I've also found to be excellent. Especially with rye whiskeys, the sweet white wine seems to mesh very nicely. As always, my opinions only and YMMV.
@glencairngamer5 күн бұрын
I usually love red wine finished whiskeys, one of my favorites right now is my lowland scotch 17 year and finished in California red wine. This would have been my first bourbon finished in red wine. I haven't touched a coalition since this bottle but maybe I'll grab the sauternes because sauternes finished whiskies are generally quite good. Penelope tokaji I have and think it's decent as well. I'll be on the lookout for another red wine finished bourbon and see if it also doesn't fit my eye...

Started getting more into Irish whiskeys the past year or two. If you haven’t yet, try Teeling small batch. So good, they age it in rum casks and you get an awesome raisin/date note on the palate. Plus, it’s only like $30-35.

Another great video. I would like to know what you think about Blanton's Straight from the barrel. Have you had a chance to try this whisky? And if so, is it worth $130-$140 per bottle? I want to buy this whisky because it’s my dream since I started my whisky adventure. Unfortunately, it was a period when many whiskeys stopped selling (and even importing) and now there is an opportunity to buy some cool bottles, including Blanton's SFTB. But I don’t want to overpay either (although 120 euros, or about $131 per bottle seems like a fair price). Greetings 👍🥃
@glencairngamer9 күн бұрын
I have not had a chance to try this whiskey yet unfortunately. However, if you have found a Blanton's STFB for 120 euros and it is your dream whiskey, I'd jump on that. People like to compare it to the Gold, which is lower proof. So if you enjoy higher proof bourbons then that sounds wonderful. Normally prices in Europe for american whiskies get high because of imports and markups but 120 euros is fantastic. Cheaper than I would ever find over here. I say absolutely jump on it and let me know how you enjoy it, cheers !! 🥃
@mikolaj...9 күн бұрын
@@glencairngamerThanks for the advice. I have to admit, I'm not gonna open this whiskey. First of all, I am a collector and buy them for the collection. Of course, cheaper whiskeys (e.g. Wild Turkey Rare Breed or Bunnahabhain 12 yo) I like to drink, but whiskeys for more than 80 euros go on the shelf and I do not open them. In the case of older/premium whiskeys - I buy samples and write taste notes. So Blanton's SFTB, like whiskey older than 18 yo or single cask, will stand on the cabinet next to the rest of my collection. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll break through and open it ;) Greetings 🥃
@glencairngamer9 күн бұрын
Oh ok! Well yea I think if you are going to put it on the shelf then you are absolutely not overpaying at 120 euros. That is the best price I've heard in a long long time. And yes maybe one day you'll get that itch and crack it : )

Despite our love for Laphroaig we need be honest about beam suntory’s practices. They add dyes and chill filter most all their whisky. This behavior should be criticized. Also laddie’s prices can be downright silly. Octomore is 5YO whisky and they charge $300.
@glencairngamer13 күн бұрын
Will NOT discount the criticism of laddies prices. They get by with "limited release" on the octomore. However, in my opinion I do think the 5 year octomores drink older than 5 and they do craft a great distillate. I'd be happier if they went $200 on some octomores. I'll warrant that the distilleries sometimes do questionable things, but I feel like if I tried to get upset over what a lot of companies do I would just not buy anything 😂 But the criticisms are valid for sure

I started out as an Ardbeg fanboy, but these days Laphroaig Quarter Cask, 10yr Cask Strength and 10yr Sherry Oak Finish are among some of my favorite bottles. I just wish the peatiness wouldn't fade from them so fast. I think that's an issue with all Islay bottlings, but I've found that they have a tendency to taste "flat" rather fast.
@glencairngamer13 күн бұрын
I'd say I agree with most of that. I think a lot of the more complex notes go away quickly and you are left with just the peat. I enjoy the port Charlotte 18, however it is a limited release and expensive. I do really love Laphroaig a bit more than Ardbeg though

Question: do you think its possible that the origins of the fishy taste in ardbeg and a few others comes from distillate stored in used fish barrels by our forefathers?
@glencairngamer15 күн бұрын
God I hope this is a joke. Salty/fishy taste comes from the peat moss and coastal ingredients in their malts. Technically to be a scotch it has to be distilled and then put into "ex American oak" barrels so maybe they got some fishy barrels but I truly hope not 😂
@lessimcdowell989715 күн бұрын
@@glencairngamer I honestly am just curious. I know that islay is an island and there’s lots of fishing and people used to store whisky in whatever they had. Your answer makes more sense lol.
@glencairngamer15 күн бұрын
@lessimcdowell9897 lol! I mean it's not something I've ever thought about to be honest. I think there are lots of regulations with where barrels come from and what they previously had in them. Islay and campbeltown both inherently have brine and coastal like flavors considering they are both along the water. Your question does make me think though, cheers! 🥃
@lessimcdowell989715 күн бұрын
@@glencairngamer just to be clear, I’m only speaking from a historical and non commercial perspective. The scenario would probably be that fisherman stored their own scotch and shipped it from a to b and much like wine barrels, people became very accustomed to the secondary taste and so nowadays ardbeg would have to be adding something to the mash or something. It sort of tastes like smoked fish. All complete guesses. Btw nice list, I was like wth when I saw laphroaig as b tier in the thumbnail.
@glencairngamer15 күн бұрын
@lessimcdowell9897 ah OK! Yea from that perspective I can see it. I don't know or rather (hope) Ardbeg isn't adding anything to give it any sort of distinct taste commercially. I get a lot of salty bacon notes from a lot of Ardbeg but can also see how smoked fish comes out as well. Haha thanks! Also yea I'd never put Laphroaig in b 😊
