I was insulted and also why the emotional whiplash in one episode instead of in four episodes later like any other anime. Episode 7,8,9 are mediocre and episode 10 was the best.

episode 1, is filler and straight-up boring. at least like one piece where majority every episode is filler, but ... there is always a story goes down the line. as for HGS, the episodes are just filler and literally goes nowhere, and episode 1 is a perfect example. that whole time, both rosemary and sage would've taken a broomstick and did the kiki delivery service, instead of going vehicle by vehicle. not only that, since they're going to this magical military academy, they should've been training, not tourism. i would like it a bit better if this was inspired by HXH where the mc would through deadly obstacles and become official hunters. that would have been interesting. also, none of the characters never show any skills. the team behind it focused too much just the characters and nothing else. what I mean by skills, like: what are their strengths or agility? what kind of power moves does the characters possess, plus limitation? those types. again, every character in HGS never once present those art forms. even their choreography and camera work never done justice. it was so lazy I couldn't be bother.

An easy fix for the cave mission is to have the main girls sneak in with older students. Make this a voluntary after-school activity for second- or third-years, and Thyme sign herself up to get the healing water on her own. Parsley can join out of concern for her friend's safety, then Rosemary insists on tagging along for the sake of adventure. Sage can begrudgingly follow but worry they'll be in trouble, so she'd try the hardest not to get caught by teachers. They can even get trapped on the outside of the healing water room, and instead of sharing secrets in a happy little bonding session, they get in a heated argument where Sage blames Thyme for Rosemary getting hurt. Thyme points out that she didn't force any of them to go with her and Rosemary is responsible for her own carelessness while she continues searching for a way to access the healing water. The writers didn't really do enough with the danger factor in that episode, it's a shame

What I noticed the really oidd thing is that they are preaching against the 'conservatism' of old magic and to move forward with new magic. However they are also preaching that new magic is 'Pollution' and that old magic is returning to nature and respecting it. So... what is the message? That you are a conservative fuck if you use new magic but a horrible polluter and neglecter of nature if you use the progressive new magic?

Caraway being trans and how being transgender might fit into the world building of the show isn't a bad thing, the execution was just handled very poorly imo. For episode 3 i think professor caraway's coming out would have just benefited from being a show don't tell thing for rosemary, and then being verbalized for snapdragon in the later episodes. We as the audience can put two and two together from the pictures alone in the book rosemary's holding, and Since rosemary's already been exposed to transformation magic from the previous eps she could figure it out that way as well, and we can still focus on rosemary's mom fr the scene and conversation. For snapdragon it wouldn't be as obvious so theyd probably need a verbal explanation from caraway and how it might work. It would make more sense and actually fit the tone of the scenes better.

The issue the writers have us they just add fantasy tropes into the show and do NOT think about world building at all. The consequences and effects of the things they add are either never are addressed or actively forgotten about. It's like every episode, every scene exists in its own little pocket reality. Transition magic is really important and impressive except when it is completely mundane. The stakes are really important except when they are completely meaningless. The cast is diverse in a very limited way. The show contradicts itself and throws in fantasy and anime tropes just because they are fantasy and anime tropes. It just throws the standard fantasy and anime "things" together sprinkles in some problematic anti-male pro-trans feminist messaging boils it till lukewarm and spoons out half cooked slop.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, forget the writing and animation, this show was broken from the _pitch_ stage of the process. Not a single one of the main characters has core motivations that would actually cause them to end up at High Guardian Academy, Rosemary and Thyme are going to school even though their core issues will, in all likelihood from what info they have, become irreparable disasters if they wait until graduation to address them. Sage is going to a school that only teaches a type of magic she has a moral objection to. Parsley is going to school to learn to be a blacksmith, even though she already is a professional blacksmith (or at least has pro skills). All of this is firther undermined by the lack of any definition of Guarduans, the Rot, Old vs. New Magic, etc. Rodriguez approached Crunchyrol with absolutely nothing to this show.

Fine show if you’ve seen better demon slaying anime and need something to satisfy that craving between episodes but it’s nothing to rush into. It had some interesting concepts and ideas but through generally mediocre storytelling and lackluster presentation it has yet to reach its full potential. Magi is a better series.

In the scene where Rosemary meets her "Mother", I find it a little hard to believe that she would fall for Mandrake's disguise so easily. Throughout the show, Rosemary's mother and her will to try and find her wash her entire motivation. She knew her mother and she love her a lot. The moment Rosemary found her mother in High Guardian High, and never running into her until now, despite being in the academy for presumedly almost an entire school year, is a little convenient but ignorable. However, throw in the fact that she's now asking her information about the Rot, the very thing she was dealing with throughout the entire series and wants to know how many people she's talked to about it, should have given her some red flags. And if nothing else, Rose mentioning Caroway and her "mother" replying with a confused "Professor Caroway?" should have been the final kick in the head. Rosemary should have realized this mother was a fake the moment Lavender said that. Professor Caroway, her best friend, and from Rose's POV, she's been in the school the is whole time, and she does know about Caroway? The person she was best friends with. I know Rose is stupid, but are the writer's seriously trying to get us to believe that she wouldn't be able to tell apart her mother from an imposter?

I hate it when shows make the parents look like they could be siblings. Like why do Sage's parents have (very) similar hair colors? They both look like they could be cousins! Same with Rosemary. It just comes off as cheap and uninspired.
