This is a great video and seems really timely. I was speaking to a lady on the greenway earlier this week who said she'd seen an ad online for woodland for sale, adjoining the M606, with ponds. I've searched online several times and haven't found anything related, but I wondered if you'd heard anything about that? Sounds worryingly familiar... :(
@urbanwildlifetips2 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comments. The land the lady refers to is the large pond at Toad Holes Beck which is privately owned. I have made planning aware and they are keen in preserving the bio-diversity at the site. Thankfully I have many important wildlife records for the site. Natual England are also aware. Just have to sit tight to see if and when it's sold and what the new owners plans are. My view is they will have a big fight on their hands if they want to destroy it...

Great video, thank you. Great idea re. hedgetrimmer too! I've successfully grown Yello Rattle in my lawn last year, then spread seed again last Autumn (in case they didn't self-seed very well) and now I have absolutely millions beginning to come up right now! My question, which I cannot find an answer to anywhere, is What wildflower seeds to try to establish next? What grows well once Yellow Rattle is well established and the grass is well reduced? Currently it looks like I have a thick 'lawn'' of purely yellow rattle seedlings, in large areas. Thank you for any ideas. What will you be doing? I have actually sprinked a selection of 'wildflower mix' in with last year's YR seeds so maybe something else will come up. If anything I'm a bit concerned that the dominance of YR will be hard for anything else to compete with! Thanks and all the best.
@urbanwildlifetips3 ай бұрын
Hi, Thank you so much for your comments they are appreciated. What I do when I have a large patch of Yellow Rattle growing is to take some YR out, say from the middle and plant small established wildflowers. The wildflowers then grow as they have no real competition from grasses and unaffected by the YR. I have never tried using windflower seeds but it might work if the YR is just sprouting and the wildflower seeds have time to germinate. Good luck and hope this helps Kind regards

@MirzAli You identify them by looking in a moth identification book or online, record what you have found and then release them.

I’d love to try sugaring last was a bumper year for red underwings I’d never seen so many hopefully this year will be the same
@@urbanwildlifetips Ophrys, this sassy orchid chick, is basically the Tinder Swindler of the plant world. She rocks a bee costume so convincing, it'd fool even the smoothest Casanova bumblebees. Fuzzy velvet petals, glistening "nectar shine" - she's got all the right curves and tricks. Then comes the magic (or should I say, manipulation). Ophrys wafts this irresistible pheromone perfume, driving the bee boys wild. They land, all heart eyes and buzzing hormones, expecting a steamy rendezvous. But BAM! Ophrys pulls a fast one. No sweet nectar, no fuzzy lovin', just a quick pollen dusting and she sends them on their way like yesterday's news. Brutal, right? But Ophrys is a queen, gotta give her that. She's playing the game smart, using her deceptive charms to guarantee pollination. She's basically the Beyoncé of the flower patch - fierce, fabulous, and always gets what she wants (pollen, obviously). So next time you see a blooming beauty, remember, it might just be Ophrys in disguise, ready to fool you and your bee buddies. Keep your wits sharp, guys, 'cause in the jungle of pollination, everyone's out to get their share

I live in the USA. Is there a moth trap that you know of that I can order online with very high catch rates that is portable and can take out to a wooded area for a few hours? I live in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan and want to go mothing next summer. I was thinking of getting the NHBS skinner style moth trap with a UV lightbulb and inverter but was curious what your recommendations are. I do have a very large mercury vapor bulb mounted to a tripod with a heavy ballast that I can take out into the field but the fire hazard is significantly greater and wanted to see what else is out there.
@urbanwildlifetips10 ай бұрын
That seems a good setup to me. I have used NHBS many times and have never had any problems. Best of luck
