First: Sorry for being a little late with the video. I had a lot of stuff going on plus a lot to do for university. Also I am planning on future projects and on 'expanding' my workshop. Stay tuned :)
I got the bunny from ‪@HeldderSteine‬ btw 😄.
In this video I restored an old grater made in 1929 by 'Alexanderwerk' which I bought last year on a flea market. The guy who sold it to me said that he found it a couple of years ago in a house clearance and used it for decoration purposes since then.
When he found it it didn't have the wooden parts that I had to remake. Those parts always seem to miss, but I am very happy with the result of the ones I made.
The work on the project took about 30 hours (inclusive filming) plus about 15 hours of editing.
If you are willing to support me leave a comment, subscribe and share my work, I really appreciate and it helps me a lot!
D.R.G.M. stands for 'Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster'. That was the 'small' patent in Germany from 1891 till 1945.
The grater was in a quite good condition considering its age. The plating on the inner part was in a good condition and didn't have much damage, so after a lot of thinking I decided to leave it on and add a new layer of plating on the original layer. Even though that is untypical you can do that, if the original plating is in a good enough condition, meaning that there are no major damages and the plating is not corroded much or is peeling off.
I hope you will have some fun watching the video! If you have any further questions on the process, tools, material, nickel plating or else write a comment, I will try my best to answer your questions.
I hope you liked the video! Thank you for watching and feel free to leave a comment and subscribe if you liked :)
Disclaimer:
The experiments are only for educational purposes and serve as entertainment.
I am experienced in handling the used substances and I advise everyone who is not a trained professional not to imitate the experiments I show you.
For experiments which could cause potential danger I will not tell you which chemicals I am using to prevent imitating. Those who know what is happening, know the chemicals anyway and probably are trained professionals. :)
I am not responsible for personal injury or property damage if any actions shown in the video will be imitated.
I hope you understand.
Until next time :)

I inherited the exact same grater from my grandma. the original color is "okkergelb" no painting on the letters, the wooden press piece had a square top and is made of one piece. originally it was tinned and not nickelized i think.

The labor performed on this grater was outstanding. Especially the fabrication of missing parts; retrofitted in order for the machine to perform as when it was new. That being said, I did have a major concern regarding the paint type, and particularly the grease that was used. Neither were food-grade certified, like Fakolith paint, and Apiezon PFPE 501 non-tox grease. Other than that, i will issue a thumbs-up. Well done.
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your comment! While I absolutely understand your concern I have to say that neither the paint nor the grease come in contact with the food, because of the build type. Also the grease is actually food safe. Since the tool will also only be a decorative piece for me, I didn’t bother getting food safe color, which I of course would have done if actually used (especially since I am a med student 😄).

Great work, but, I have SO MANY QUESTIONS ! 1) If we are going to use the sandblaster, why bother stripping the paint? 1:26 / 1:39 2) If you are going to re-plate it anyway, why not sandblast down and remove the old plating? 4:50 3) If that wooden circle piece will go on the lathe, why not cut the circle using that? 13:35 OK, I only had three, but I am subscribing anyway !
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your comment and your support! To your questions: 1.) Old paint, especially those that were used back in time on old stuff may contain lead and lead is toxic. So you remove the paint safely first with paint stripper and sandblast afterwards. Different lacquers also may contain chrome, especially Chrome VI, which is also toxic and carcinogenic. Also sandblasting paint is very annoying and makes the blasting medium turn bad much faster. 2.) You can of course do that. But if the plating is in good condition, you can just keep it how it is. The old plating also protects the steel and was in a surprisingly good shape. I suppose the tool wasn't used very much or was used with much care. Removing or leaving the original plating is I think just a matter of style. I actually always remove the plating and replate, but this time I wanted to try out something new and share it with you guys. 3.) I try to avoid working with wood on the lathe, I only do that when I don't see another way to get the desired finish. Also I wanted to work a little with the bandsaw since I have it and like working with it, it's a great tool! Plus I wanted to try out the jig I made. As you have seen in the video I just turned the face clean on the lathe, made a chamfer and sanded on the lathe. Thank you very much for your comment and your great questions!

Fabulous job there! Lots of different skills and techniques used here. I must say that the hand painted lettering always seems not worth it to me. When the rest of the paint job is so flawless the lettering being slightly jittery detracts from the quality. Seems that original did not have painted letters and it would still be legible with just the ivory.
