I played Beast of Winter at a much higher level than recommended and took Vatnir with me, which was a boon for the fights in the White Void : a lot of mobs there are Spirits and Vatnir's automatic leveling gives him the Dismissal spell, which kills those enemies in one strike. It makes a lot of the fights a lot easier.

Does 'game of the year' really mean much when folks haphazardly throw it at pretty much everything these days though? Same for calling things 'legendary', 'iconic', 'masterpiece', 'hidden gem', etc. Words and phrases like that lose their meaning when they're tossed around so frequently :C

I played this game on release and I had a bit better impression of it. Most problems like lack of meaningful choices does not bother me because I'm fine with linear stories as long as I'm only going to play it once. The Fetch Quests were mostly just reasons for the player character to visit a special area and see the story play out there. Wile it is inspired by D&D it is also based on the old Might and Magic games. At least the magic system seem to be. A lot of the classes seem to be quite unique also, with the fire mage being a melee specialist that buff himself and others with fire magic. Finally, I liked the low and gritty fantasy meets Lovecraft esthetics. Yea, the fact that the main solution to eldritch horrors seem to be to just kill them... Well, thats RPGs and D&D in particular for ya. I thought the writing was good for what it was. The scenario is believable, a stranded hero on a mission to save the girl are stuck on an accursed island and discover that the only way out is through. After finding the girl she and him decides after their successes that whatever this is is bigger than them both and that they have been successful at fighting it so far. The plan is not to kill the big bad though. It is to stop whatever ritual is summoning him before he arrives. I have never played moonring however so I dont know what you are comparing it to.
@chuckwood3426
@chuckwood3426 6 күн бұрын
Some comments on the UI. It is possible to start combat stealthed. You do this by entering stealth and starting the battle manually before the enemy have seen you. Doing so will give you a free round in combat which is very powerful. But I dont know if the game teaches you this.
@YeOldEntertainment
@YeOldEntertainment 6 күн бұрын
@@chuckwood3426 Well. A couple of observations here. I didn't say the plan was to "kill the bad guy". It is to stop the ritual, but as player you are lead to believe that that is going to entail some sort of epic fight against the evil that's behind it. And second, no the game doesn't tell you how to start a fight stealthed. The way I see it, it should've been by allowing you do use your combat skills before the fight and then presenting you with the position interface. To me me, the fact that this isn't how it works, makes it a bit obscure. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's just not great and didn't do anything too different from stuff that we have already seen. I think Moonring is much better experience as far as old game-inspired RPGs go.

Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 are better games than 3! The first two games have a better plot, another level of music, and a far superior living world feel, taking you to kingdoms, territories, and politics that make you feel alive while giving you freedom of exploration through a world map!!! I could go on and on giving you reasons to say that this isn't based on nostalgia, just the perception of superior quality, but now I have a child of my own to raise, so that is it!!!

This game rules but not having even a one-time respec option isn't difficult it's just a waste of time. Oh you have a job and family? Sounds like you're too much of a pussy for a game this hardcore then. Give me a break, thank God for cheat engine
@YeOldEntertainment
@YeOldEntertainment 10 күн бұрын
It has nothing to do with having a family, a job, nor any other thing (that everyone has). By using a cheat engine, you just rob yourself of the consequences of your decisions. Dealing with them is the way this game is intended to be played. Every build is viable in Underrail (if it's reasonable), even those that are flawed. If your build is not "great", it just takes a little bit more of trial and error to overcome a situation.
@HamidKarzai
@HamidKarzai 9 күн бұрын
@@YeOldEntertainment yes my build was definitely viable, but there were a bunch of really interesting feats I could have gotten which I had passed up for feats that turned out to be boring and uninteresting, because I didn't understand the mechanics well enough at the time I picked them. The consequences that I missed out on were either moving on though the game playing in a more boring way, or redoing a big chunk of the game which is so immersion breaking I'd rather restart outright. I can agree I would have robbed myself out of something if I resorted to cheat engine because I found the game too difficult, but I'd already spent 70 hours figuring out what works and what didn't and got through that. Way I see it, not allowing a single respec just encourages players to follow a build guide which I think robs them of a whole lot more
@YeOldEntertainment
@YeOldEntertainment 9 күн бұрын
You are equating "no respeccing" to "having to use a build guide" and this is simply not true. I've played the game three times (without using and respeccing editor or whatever) and I have never used a build guide. Sometimes my choices were a little bit more satisfying, sometimes a little bit less, sometimes I hated not being able to do this or that, but not being able to hack that final construct or to open this particularly pesky door or whatever IS part of the game. The way I see it, respeccing is like: "I want to see all the content and experience everything the game has to offer in ONE PLAYTHROUGH, so let me re-spec to a build that will allow me to get the most out of EVERY situation" and I detest this approach. But hey, if that's how you find your fun, then by all means. This is a great game and respeccing is how you make the most out it then by all means.

@@YeOldEntertainment Nah, I was completely playing around and just poking fun at people who get offended that their game doesn't score a 10 lol. 7 is a fair score for a objective review. Without the Lovecraftian element I probably would have scored it around a 6 especially since I played it on patch one when the version was still showing"pre-release" and the final fight was WAY too easy, I mean it was a joke how easy it was (he patched it after I finished the game) I played on normal difficulty, not hard like yourself.

I finished the game in about 30 hours and can't safely recommend it if you're a spoiled CRPG fan like miyself who will complain when a game doesn't give you enough roleplay choices or interactions with the world. Too much stuff is missing in the base release. Some of which can be fixed, like class/spell balance or UI or lack of content in second half of the game. But what's the point of the "factions" tab in the journal? Currently there's no such mechanic in the game and I'm not sure the dev can add it at this point, it would have to be tightly integrated with the plot and game world for it to actually make sense. Also I don't get why do we need these first person dungeon crawler sections where you can't properly interact with anything and can only move in four directions. Not sure it can be helped unless the dev makes a whole new campaign. Also I noticed that many skill checks don't lead to anything meaningful and only give you false choices that don't even give xp or meager reward. And the writing is not that great, it's just OK, isn't rewarding enough in and of itself. All in all, not a big fan of this game, it's not bad per se and is very playable but I wouldn't recommend it blindly to anyone, you can get disappointed just like myself.

Hey thanks for this. I stumbled on this vid randomly and have just downloaded Moonring. I played Ultima 4 back in the late 80's for years on a Commodore 64. I got absolutely nowhere with it. Not a single quest completed, not a single virtue raised. Why? Because my copy was from a friend who lived far away and it came with no manual, no guides, and no internet at the time to look up anything at all. My friend was no help as he had never played it. Plus I didn't even know how to go on the old pre-internet message boards to get help/advice/hints which was how I learned years later most players who beat the game were able to do so. Even if I had known how to go on message boards it would have made no difference because I knew no one with a modem. Plus I lived in a very rural area with no one around me that knew anything about PCs. So what did I do? I played it like it was GTA before GTA was even a concept. Just randomly running into villages & towns swinging on anything & everything. Getting destroyed by the town guards, dying, or barely escaping with my life only to get poisoned in the wilderness fighting snakes, etc. And I did this for hundreds if not thousands of hours. Sooo for a long time now out of nostalgia and regret at never having properly played Ultima 4 I have wanted _something_ kinda like it but with a little bit better graphics & gameplay. Hopefully this is it. So thanks again and subbed.

Boards? of what kind of foul sorcery doth thee speaketh of?? Internet (or online communications for that matter) weren't a thing in my country up until the mid-to-late-90's. The way to figure out Ultima IV was to invite people over and collectively come up with ideas of what to do. XD (I know, primitive). Though the open-worldish approach was par for the course of the experience naturally. I think you are going to love Moonring. In my book this is how you bring back the Ultima experience.

@@YeOldEntertainment Yeah online message boards were a thing believe it-or-not in the 80's. At least by the mid 80's. I saw my friend's old brother on them one time. It was a very small crowd of early adopters tho with the know-how to connect a modem to a computer that had access to message boards. At least where I lived. I was not part of that crowd even tho I knew of early online message boards in the 80's. Pretty sure this was before America Online was a thing... Anyway tho I'm really looking forward to Moonring. I only half agree with Rick's statement that people don't care about game music only the game. I would argue sometimes the reason one is so into the game itself, which one may not even realize if it's sub-consciously, is because of the music. Music sets the tone of the area they're in and actions that it requires to progress. A couple of my many honorable mentions Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver or the original Deus Ex

I disagree that the best games are thise where you use your imagination. If you didn't like the second Castlevania it's because it was poorly made. Period. Baldur's Gate, God of War, etc. those games are good snd immersive being triple A's only because they are well made.
@YeOldEntertainment
@YeOldEntertainment 15 күн бұрын
1st. I never said that I didn't like the second Castlevania. The second Castlevania was Simon's Quest and it started the whole "metroidvainia" genre. It wasn't poorly made, it was a top tier game for its time. It was not voiced because NO GAME was voiced in 1987. 2nd. A game DOES NOT have to be a triple A title to be good. A triple A title is defined by its production values, not by its quality. Good graphics, sound production, voice acting these things DO NOT define the quality of a game. A game can be a triple A title AND a good game or it can be a Triple A title AND a bad game. 3rd. Baldur's Gate was not a triple A title when it came it out in 1998. It became a cult classic because it rocked the gaming world.
