Wow, that spot has definitely changed from when I first got a pic at that location in 2003. Ancient jointed rails, rotted ties, mudholes galore and two semaphores made the scene then. Sad to see the latter is now gone. At least I have the pic of it all.

*Test, test, test...* The system clearly has been ready for action for at least a year... when are they going to turn off the fossil burners?!! I got tired of watching these electric trainsets test, and test, and test in Pueblo, CO in 2022!!! The last Magnetic Flagman wig wag operated less than 70 miles from that location! *Turn the switch! Start running the trains!*

A year ago the wires weren't even installed yet. They were still building the catenary supports. They will go into service in September. A few diesel sets will be retained for the Gilroy trains. As for wigwags, the one at Delhi was the last "Colorado wigwag". There are still a few left in California.

Looks like, per Google maps, the wigwag is still there? Question is, are the rails still in use?
@Pixeltoaster-TV5 күн бұрын
Yes, they are. I heard a train go by very recently, they run them pretty frequently.

When the last one came in, a few folks were being pretty sentimental and saying close to it. Someone (I presume from the Operations Control Center) got on the PA and said "please stand back from the platform, this train is ready to depart." Then, a few seconds later, "Take your hand off the train, that is NOT safe!"

BART is now starting a much better future with a much more sound technical basis. The old trains were groundbreaking for their time, but they were also exotic and fragile, extremely expensive to maintain, and not very good as metro trains due to their original commuter rail intent. The old train control system was, again, revolutionary for its time and copied the world over, but it was also insufficiently safe and extremely imprecise compared to that new Hitachi CBTC they're installing. The old magstripe payment system was immediately recognized as the standard to aspire to, and some systems in Europe and Asia only switched to it finally a decade ago. The new open payment system will actually grow BART ridership with free transfers and zoned payment Bay-wide. With the new trains, fully rebuilt track infrastructure, and a new payment system BART will be faster, more frequent, more reliable, and better as a near-metro quality S-bahn. We should be celebrating this moment. BART is growing up and becoming a better system.

how do you change the pitch of the bell?
@danosf9 ай бұрын
One of two ways... either turning the gong (hole is off center), or by adjusting the hammers. That adjusts the loudness. As for pitch, I don't believe that can be adjusted. Just depends on how the bell was cast. I think...
