Think letterman is throwing mega shade here: woozy at altitude is a question he ia putting about how everyone who believes that Scientology bullahit crap is taken into space and given a conversation (i mean this actually is supposed to happen daily) So were you woozy in that 600,000 meter instantaneous atmosphere pemetration? If that were to gappen nd you did get acceleratedat sucj speed uou qould be torn asunderuçh like your belief in a purpose in this crappy rock.

Personally I don't find his behavior that strange. At most it's just a weak interview. I'm guessing, given his veteran status as an actor at that point, that Dave's staff didn't see the need to do a pre-interview. That would have made for a smoother result.. but even if Dave is carrying the conversation, he was perfectly capable of doing so at that point. Even if this is in fact the interview that supposedly inspired Christian Bale's performance in American Psycho, it was clearly just a point of departure for the Patrick Bateman character. I can see a trace of it on a surface level, but it feels like nothing more than a symptom of general nerves. If anything, the reason most actors seem so articulate in interviews is because 1) they're actors, and 2) lesser stars are most likely pre-interviewed and therefore the entire conversation is mapped out from the start like bowling in a bumper lane. For whatever reason, Tom has this tense, disingenuous vibe through much of the interview, which is probably more in line with how an ordinary person would behave if they were being interviewed on Letterman. On the outside, it seems phony, and just a tad Patrick Bateman-esque.. but on a deeper level, it's a very human display of vulnerability/insecurity. I was surprised how normal it is relative to the title. I had this confused with the Oprah interview where he's running around and shouting and jumping on stuff. That's actually crazy. As for the plane story, I see nothing more than a recounting of the kind of ultimately harmless buddy story that, while a dick move at the time, becomes an endless source of laughter with age. Tragedy + time... But whatever's going on here, I admit I'm giving Tom the benefit of the doubt because from what I'm reading, this interview is from 1999, Tom's unquestionable GOAT year as an actor... (Eyes Wide Shut/Magnolia, anyone?) I don't think any actor in '99 had a better year than he did.
