All of this and the comments miss the real differences… The Valar (Morgoth) literally built the world. They crafted it. The Valar raised and created mountains, vegetation, entire continents on Arda (Earth). They were very large physically and extremely powerful. Their ONLY limitation - and the ONLY thing that made than less than God himself (Eru) - was they couldn't create sentient life from nothing (though they could change and reshape it or judge/preserve it in eternity). The Maiar (Sauron) were also Ainur like the Valar, but they were smaller, less powerful, and not capable of shaping entire continents or manipulating life. Sauron built Barad-Dur (a tower). Morgoth built Utumno and later Angband, entire mountain ranges that acted as fortresses. The Valar in their wars between Morgoth and the others would destroy and remake the world numerous times. Sauron wasn't capable of that amount of destruction.

It wasn't uncommon in anchient time for fathers to throw away their children if deformed, after birth the father would look at the child and decide to keep it or not...not keeping it meant death for the child, another reason might have been gender or economic reasons, to my knowladge the mother could not oppose the decision, because children were considered only the father's, women were considered Just "containers"...that's why there are so many myths and tails about children being abandoned
