Good old victor propaganda, like ww2... or the german corpse factories of ww1 where they accused them of making soap our of corpses, it was a lie, rehashed in ww2.

Any incarnation of the Baltic project was just utter insanity. Even if everything went exactly as Fisher planned - a very big assumption - the Germans would just have mined and closed off the Skagerrak and Kattegat; effectively trapping the entire BEF on the belt isles without any supply. Forget Salonica, *this* would have been the largest open air POW camp in the world.

Although your strategic considerations correctly reflect the situation in 1914, this was not the reason why Austria and Germany took up arms in 1914, but it was the fact that Moscow and Paris had done so before.

Its been over 100 years, and people are still blaming Germany for a war it didn’t want and didn’t start. In 1913, Former US President William Howard Taft called Kaiser Wilhelm II and Germany at large “the single greatest force for *peace* in Europe.” In 1914 the main bulk of Austro-Hungarian forces did, in fact, go against the Russians. With the bulk of the German Army in France and Belgium, the AH forces were no match for the surprisingly well equipped (initially) and well organized Russian forces, and the Serbian front was undermanned, hence the defeats there. Italy stayed out of the war initially because they didn’t foresee anything worth winning by joining the Central Powers. It wasn’t a matter of who liked who, it was a matter of “would we send men to die in France for no gains we actually want?” Russia took longer to mobilize than German and AH, but they also started much sooner. In fact, they started almost as soon as the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and didn’t stop even when Germany begged them to not intervene and waited until the last second to mobilize. Overall, this video is based on a lot of half truths and some outright incorrect information, all filtered through a premade conclusion: Germany and Austria-Hungary *must* take the blame for the war. In reality, if one must put the blame on a specific country, it would be just as if not far more accurate to blame Russia for mobilizing first and not standing down.

Sorry, but that is bullshit. Italy wanted to claim Croatia and other parts of Austria. Austria didn't want to give up territory. France promissing them more territory in Austria than Austria promised them in France made the break the treaty. Austrias Army lost their veteran forces in Galicia to Russian Maschinguns to which they adapted to late. It wasn't some kind of great serbian army that hit them hard.

Czarist Russia started the war by mobilising its troops, forcing Germany to try to knock out France quickly so it would then be fighting on only the Eastern front. And Soviet Russia was complicit in Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939.

I am trying to remember all I can about Norman Friedman's Fighting the Great War at Sea, which is where I first read about Fisher's Baltic Plan. He discusses it extensively and agrees that it offered a viable alternative to fighting a massive land war on the Continent. However, he discusses it not so much in terms of cutting of trade with Sweden as much as conducting pinprick raids against the North German coast, forcing Germany to divert its attention for more obviously vital fronts (sounds not unlike the Commando raids in WWII). As for throwing shades at Churchill and the Dardanelles operation, I recall that Friedman defended both on the grounds that something had to be done to keep Russian wheat exports flowing through the Black Sea (hmm, that sounds familiar), and also that Churchill was hardly the only one in Cabinet who argued for such a move, but he definitely took the worst fall for it, and he continues to take the worst fall for it long after his death. From other sources, it seems to me that the Dardanelles operation, for all its failings, actually came closer to succeeding than is often recognized - the initial landings could very well have opened the way to Constantinople, but for the efforts of Mustafa Kemal. It's hard to plan for your enemy showing such heroism as the future Ataturk.

This gives way too much credit to the Baltic Project. Risking capital ships against mines and torpedoes in the narrow confines of Germany's backyard, far from the safety of either the open sea or secure bases, was never a serious plan. Launching a major amphibious campaign against Aleppo, Damascus, and other strategic positions in the middle east in 1915 or 16 is a much more rational concept of how Britain could have used the strategic mobility enabled by naval supremacy. They would have had to give France something in exchange for their Syrian colonial ambitions, but there were a lot of German colonies they could have offered.

Pretty solid if one is looking solely at the mainstream history book narrative. In truth, the banking cartel that recaptured England with the mysterious William of Orange coronation after being ousted in the 14th century, was a primary mover here. Nicholas II had repeatedly refused their overtures to set up a Central Bank in Russia. The US succumbed to them in 1913 under Woodrow Wilson (who later admitted it was his greatest mistake) and Russia was next, one way or another. Add to this the fact that Germany was outproducing the UK industrially and in other ways. The Hapsburgs were a mess for sure and bound to fall, like the Ottoman Empire. Feel free to look up all US Presidents who were assassinated (including the 6 attempts upon Andrew Jackson) and their opposition to a Central Bank. Or just believe the nonsense on tv.

A better video would be about how Britain changed a local European war of less then 2 years, into a global war of 4 years and when they realized they could not win it, got the US involved. The AEF came to Europe and brought the flu which killed over 50 million people world wide. This also led to Communism, Nazism, the Holodomor, the Holocaust and all the resulting wars. Good job Britain.

Unfreakinreal, that churchill was given control of any amount of military or just in control of any other human lives period. Not only ww1 but ALSO ww2. What a sham, giving politicians who are more worried about their ego, more power, than the proven longtime military commanders that are more worried about their troops and arguably more worried for the future than politicians can imagine. What a sham.
