As a person long in the photo game (director of photography in publishing in NYC and then a commercial shooter since 2000) I'd like to give my idea of what editorial means or used to mean actually. Editorial meant shooting for a magazine. Usually the photographer was given more free reign creatively (and less fee) than shooting for a commercial client. Often it would be you and the crew but not uncommon for no magazine staff to be along. When I was a director of photography I'd hire a photographer, give him or her the shoot outline or shape of the job and then just pray and hope that when I opened the box of prints it would be a spectacular shoot. If the subject of a shoot was a celebrity then staff would go but the shoot style was usually decided before hand by input from the photographer and discussions between me and the creative director and the photographer. Covers would always have staff on hand. When I first began shooting I did a ton of magazine work but as magazines faded away I turned to shooting almost exclusively commercial. I think "editorial" is usually the way to think when creating your portfolio or viewpoint but it certainly won't pay the bills. The goal is to find clients that like your editorial work and then hire you for commercial...

I too have just started to shoot video with my GFX100. The bottom line is that a person can create truly beautiful video with it. It is not a good tool for all situations. But if you have a controlled situation such as a demonstration video or advertisment, then it works very well. It is not suited to 'run and gun' or highly dynamic situations where AF is critical. The great number of video settings matter a lot. I have been shooting Hlog so far with in camera recording. Yes, a variable ND filter is a must so as to keep the frame rate and exposure correct. I have recently shot with the Zeiss Milvus 50mm and 85mm F1.4 lenses. Those lenses coupled with the medium format sensor create wonderful, beautiful video. They also allow for very precise manual focus which is important when using the lenses wide open. There are many lenses out there with an aperture of F2 and less. The number of Fuji GF lenses are kind of lacking in this regard.

I am an aspiring Editorial Photographer, but I do not own a camera at the moment. I plan to save for a good if not best camera I can purchase. What do you guys think should I buy? What kind or brand of camera? I am a freshman college student and the camera price here in my country is quite costly. Need your tips about this.

@@kevintitus I would go with something simple like a Røde VideoMic Pro or similar with a boom kit, as close to your face as possible. As an alternative I would try mixing both stereo channels into one to have a more balanced MONO feeling, with a bit of compression to make it more stable it should be good enough. Cheers! =)

Great video Kevin! Would you recommend price anchoring for a test shoot with a “new face” from an agency? This is my first time contacting this local modeling agency so I’m just curious since you said this doesn’t apply to every shoot
@kevintitus
@kevintitus 3 жыл бұрын
What's up, Joseph! Nice to see you here, man. I think price anchoring is a great idea with model tests. When you contact modeling agencies, I would make sure to mention what your testing rate is but then offer to do one or two unpaid tests to get your foot in the door. Keep in mind that once you build a solid portfolio of model test work, you probably won't have to do any unpaid tests anymore, but offering one or two free shoots is okay if you're just getting into that world.
