Have you sprayed the inside of the box section with corrosion inhibitor? Wax oil? You can just spray the inside top of the box, because it will drip down, when it gets very hot! Very good build by the way :).

Thanks for the quick and dirty review on this awning. I have to say the biggest thing about freestanding awnings that scares me (seeing all the horror story on the tube....) is how quickly it is for a huge wind gust to essentially mangle the entire thing beyond repair. That's a LOT of wing surface and a lot of cantilever force applied to that one articulation where all the arms stack up. IF I ever buy another one (did buy an ironman once and returned/sold it one hour later after installation and realized the backside would NOT cover my kitchen/hatch area of my truck) I would certainly advocate to ALWAYS drop the extra pole or at least put the guy lines down. $270 is a great price. Best of luck.
@javilee9824 күн бұрын
I agree with you, it just depends on the day/weather. Certain days in my driveway there's absolutely no wind so it's free standing. Every time I've taken it to the beach, even with mild wind I stake it down. It only takes 3 minutes to stake it down so it's worth it. If it's crazy windy I won't open it up, I'm familiar with the horror stories as well!
@dattran637222 күн бұрын
yep, and most of these lower priced awnings are REALLY weak at the joints and that's where they get messed up or break even in weaker winds.

Great project! The WaterWeld might be a bit overkill. Applying PVC glue to both the male and female parts of the pipe should prevent any leaks. This method is commonly used in building sprinkler systems, gutters, and perimeter drains.

Thanks for the video! I successfully installed one strut on the wheel side using the screws with no protrusions. There are solid plastic “feet” that make the sidewall much thicker. So far one strut does me just fine and I did 2 cases for $30

Not only should those shock bolts to torqued *TIGHT* but also require use of lock nuts. The shock's bushing is designed to relieve the torsion stress. The bushing sleeves *MUST* be fastened secure and static.
@jasonbarnett125622 күн бұрын
You want the shock to rotate and since there's going to be some side-to-side movement of the axle, something needs to allow for that play. It could be the shock sliding on it's mounting bolt (or sleeve), but you're saying the bushing is designed to take that torsional load and deflect?

I'm considering a homemade rack for my roof that does NOT have channels or existing mounting holes. Did you use the spacers just to clear the channel grooves? On MY roof (no channels), would placing the angle iron directly on the roof give more surface area (contact) to distribute the load better? Of course, I'd have nuts beneath the roof. I appreciate your opinion. This is just a brainstorm at this point; so, no dreams dashed if you think it's a bad idea. ;-) Thanks!
@javilee98Ай бұрын
Correct on the spacers, just used to clear the channel grooves. I think placing the angle iron directly on the roof would be a bad idea, any rubbing/moving will scratch and rust quickly. Could potentially make a rubber/silicone washer to keep metal off metal but I still wouldn't really recommend it.

100%!! Pressure is no joke. Air leaks out at 15 PSI at both caps and my relief valve so I'm very comfortable with the design.

Why did it leak? It should have welded plastic together...something was wrong with your glue for the PVC. I think most likely is that you applied the purple primer and let to too many pieces and it dried before you put them together. Everything needs to be wet when you push them together. Some teflon tape on threads might have sealed the screw on pieces.
@javilee98Ай бұрын
I did it wet on one of the joints and it leaked as well, this DWV pipe doesn't have as tight of a fit as regular PVC. I also did Teflon tape on the threads but it's still leaking, not terrible enough to worry about it. Can still get up to 20ish PSI and plenty of pressure
@javankuusisto6614Ай бұрын
When gluing a joint, hold it for about 15 seconds. If it backs out from the hydraulic pressure, you could have leak
@svakula123Ай бұрын
I had the same issues with leaks. I used JB Weld which seems to help. Rather than use my big inflation pump, I bought a cheap Amazon adjustable pump for $23. You can set the pressure where you want it. Nice job on your mounts. I never thought about 3d printing something. I just used the extra large tie wraps.

I lived in the 2017 path - like you traveled to AR for this one (Twice) -- And coming to You in FL in 2045...but I may be too old to drive -- You might start saving money for going to Sydney AU in 2028. - I may be there for my Third. -- Glad you had a safe trip and thanks for taking us along. -- Your Drone Footage was great and special among the vlogs I've watched about this event. - Googled KY DOT and it looks like they contract out the removal and replacement of those 10 ft slabs as a way to repair (when they think it gets bad) - a contract I saw online gave a company 5 million to redo "slabs" in a 4 mile section on both sides. - wow. -- Since your Toyo is 4x4 (steep gravel driveway) -- make a reservation to see the NC Mountains in Summer or Fall. - $52 a night gets you a personal campsite with a flush toilet and hot shower - Can un-hook and explore the GSMNP about 10 miles away - maybe also explore some Forest Service land as well for future trips (for free). HIPCAMP.COM - search Holley's Wood Solo Site. Sorry, but the closest Disc Golf is a beginner course.

Thanks for this comment! I think for me I would've enjoyed the eclipse more with family or friends to experience it with. That slab repair is interesting, we don't have that in FL that I'm aware of, they just redo the surface. I'll also have to look into HipCamp, that could be a great tool to add for trip planning. I want to try to get to the mountains this summer/fall, get away from the FL heat!

2 things I would add. I installed the exact same winch and ampd up mount as you did on my 05 Tundra on Easter weekend. First, the synthetic rope line doesn’t go into the hole on the winch roller, it’s too big. So we had to auger out the hole and also strip back some of the rope strands and then heat shrink the end. Kind of a pain. Apparently the rope line that Harbor Freight sells is for the more expensive Apex winch so that’s why it doesn’t fit right. Second, I bought the $40 cordless winch remote and it works great. I just put the remote in my center console. Outside of that it was a fairly easy and straight forward install and that ampd up mount made it easy, it fits great. I had mine powder coated for $150. Nice video, very informative! :-)
