Did I hear you correct when you said you installed these two windows in front of existing windows? How do you do the actual installation for that? Could we get a break down please?
@Mr.StainedGlass3 күн бұрын
Yes Many different ways depending on the style of window In this case, we did it directly on drywall anchoring 1/2" aluminum u channel through to the Studs to secure in place and used existing window frame as a back stop

Excellent video, I am adding it to our tutorials playlist. Very well done and clearly explained. You might mention that the 50/50 and 60/40 solder DOES contain some lead. I think most people nowadays will prefer the lead free solder.

Thanks McGills! I normally prefer it also.

If I'm not ready to go all in with a grinder, can the peices be sanded by hand while I figure things out?
@Mr.StainedGlass22 күн бұрын
You would need a paid of grozer pliers. Edges will be a bit rough. Technically you can sand them.

I have found it to be pretty cost friendly for supplies. I suggest that you start with scrape glass and make small pieces. You can get scrap glass in many sizes, pretty cheap. Stained glass is a process and does take some time. One store just gave me a box full of a scrap glass free.

Great video. I am making several windows that will be exposed to wind and weather. Should I use copper foiling or lead for that environment. My project is a for a charity and I am paying for the glass. Where’s the best place to buy large quantities of glass with a fair price and inexpensive shipping online?

Probably basic tools like a glass cutter, grozers,growers, scissors, marker you can get away with. Scrap glass should be enough to make this panel Almost forgot, solder, soldering iron, Flux, Flux brush applicator, copper foil

I am new to stain glass. After copper foiling and shouldering, with a little pressure, my pieces get separated. What is the reason?
@Mr.StainedGlassАй бұрын
You need to secure the pieces on the perimeter with nails or scrap trim boards

Hi Mr. Stained Glass, I'm new to your channel. Thanks for these videos. They are very helpful. I'm retired and just getting back into working with glass after a 40 year hiatus. I find I spend an awful lot of time grinding due to poor cutting and grozing skills. Especially with smaller sized pieces. I suppose it will improve with practice. Any advice on how to practice? Also, I am shopping for a new grinder as the one I have is quite old. Do you have a mid priced one you would recommend? Thank you!
@Mr.StainedGlass2 ай бұрын
Hi! The best way really is to just keep practicing. It may be wise to buy some cheap 1/8" clear glass just to practice scoring. Gryphon gyphette is a nicely priced smaller grinder. We use them often.

Good video with some important points mentioned. It would have been helpful if you started right at the beginning - by demonstrating how to measure up the window in the door taking into account the rebate and then how you need to lay out the lead around the border of the pattern taking into account the rebate and where the border cutting line is. It’s imperative to get the measuring aspect of this kind of project accurate since the panel has to fit into a frame. I would also have liked to have seen a slowed up video footage of how you actually cut & fitted the lead around some of your glass pieces. This part of building the panel can be challenging too. Otherwise this was really informative thankyou!

It took quite a bit of time to do the bee piece. It's more intricate than I imagined, but not only is practice makes perfect, but more importantly, perfect practice makes perfect. Hakko says not to use the sal block on their irons. Its not compatible with the metal used. You will shorten the life of your tip. Use their tip cleaner. More info on care can be found on their KZfaq channel eye on Hakko.

Silberschnitts for curves are a game changer. And colored carbon paper allows you to trace your pattern to darker glass without cutting the pattern.
@Mr.StainedGlass3 ай бұрын
I like the color carbon paper idea! A bit of work retracing but if you have no other option, seems easier than cutting out a pattern and tracing it

Your shop looks like Delphi, when you mark pattern on glass, your mark stays? spray adhesive, cut pice, spray on back, adhere to glass, cut to line. residue washes off then use glass
@Mr.StainedGlass3 ай бұрын
Never been there! Our facility is ~30k sqft. It stays well enough to get the first score off and an initial round of grinding. Occasionally may have to remark if your score was really off. I find the cutting of the pattern, gluing, etc is a big hassle personally! But it works!

pardon my noob question but googling has left me drowning in information: What's the difference between stained glass and leaded glass? Why do you need a hotter iron for leaded glass? Thank you!
@Mr.StainedGlass3 ай бұрын
Stained glass is an overarching term for many mediums. Leaded glass is a medium of stained glass among others like copper foil, faceted glass, smalti mosaics, fused glass,etc. Think of it like painting as the over arching terms with different mediums like water color, oil, etc. We use a higher melting point solder for leaded glass so the hotter iron is faster for better productivity.

With all the flux you are using, it doesn’t seem to be spitting and sputtering. Why is that.? I know someone that cuts his bristles down on his brush since, “You don’t want to bath your foil in flux.” 🥴 And it saves on flux.
@Mr.StainedGlass3 ай бұрын
I notice if it starts spitting/sputtering,normally it's on the flip side with the Flux caught between the initially soldered side and the newly soldered side. I try to solder to not trap any Flux and have a way for it to easily exit if possible.
