Man, oh man, what an ordeal... I have been preparing to sell my awesome 2004 BMW R1150RS so I could buy a KTM 390 Adventure, but now that I have seen this video, it has made me rethink my decision! My RS is a dream to adjust the valves on: it's all within easy reach, with ZERO drama to get to, and make happen, but this bike (though I do love it), was clearly not designed with the "shade tree" mechanic in mind... I don't drink, but these images have me heading towards a Deschutes Brewery IPA for relief....and I'll also have to go on a long ride on my RS now, too, just to reduce my stress level.... Any excuse to ride her, that's all I need, I suppose: the sun is shining; it's raining; I'm not sure what the weather is going to do? What's the answer? Go for a ride, of course! Thanks for the video, brother, and oh yea, my new found drinking problem, too. 🤣

The main drawback on a ADV motorbike is that once is drop will go flat (the shape of the engine on the BMW let it drop less over solid ground, but they are heavy) while the engine protection bars aren't useful because they are made that way for when is used off-road. Someone use lateral bags to reduce this issue. I wonder if put bags is sufficient or add some sliders too do the tricks. Essentially these precautions are able to avoid a drop of the moto over the leg or not? So avoid an injury? Someone that have a ADV moto, purposely put down on the ground, could see if remain sufficient space for the leg?

Mine (2019 model) was professionally lowered/modified to flat foot with an above knee prosthetic. Here's what I learned: Before you mess with the geometry. 1. Choose your riding boots carefully and use an insole. You can win 5mm or more right there. 2. Cut the seat and put gel in. It will be just as comfy and you'll get something like another 10-15mm (compressed) height reduction. Narrowing also helps if you can take some side padding out. 3. Fit the Honda height reduction kit. Its a couple of plates that hold the lower suspension anchor point. Again that's about 15 mm saving - you should drop the front forks by about the same. 4. At that point you CAN push the envelope, and take it maybe 10mm lower still with soupy's and/or with a custom height reduction plates. BUT BE AWARE you are now in the area where everything you do is negatively affecting the geometry, suspension and handling. This could be a safety issue so keep alert, test it well in the dry accelerating, braking and turning. Most of all KEEP SAFE. Oh yeah, your sidestand will become too long, and the centerstand(?) probably harder to use. Be ready to change it out if you need to.
@amp2amp8004 ай бұрын
That's a cool kit. There's also a Honda kit that will lower the back end. It involves mounting plates, not the dog bones. I guess yours was already lowered to the max with this factory option? My bike needed lowered so I could flat foot my left prosthetic leg and support the bike with a locked knee. Having no ankle means I cant tip toe that side. The standard kit didn't quite cut it. When doing the mod we made up copies of the Honda lowering kit plates but with dimensions that reduced the height a tiny bit more. This was done by an experienced and qualified engineer, with attention to the fact that going too far can be a safety concern. Then we cut away the seat. After passing the assessment test, I got that tidied up and cut down even further and gel inserted. There is a big win to be had just by sorting the seat, and I find it more comfortable too. Finally I got new bike boots choosing ones with thicker sole and heel, and I put a sole insert in. I think seat and boots are probably the first things to look at, maybe you won't need to go further.

I lowered my NC 5 cm or 2 inch. The senterstand does not fit now, and the same with sidestand. Both will be changed. But for me with short legs, it fits perfect fully flatfoot.

The only downside to this motorcycle is the valve adjustment. What would happen if I don't do the valve adjustment?
@geeksonbikes4 ай бұрын
If it falls far enough out of spec the valve could hit the cylinder and you would need an engine rebuild. Definitely not recommend. Also, I was a little out of spec and I had trouble cold starting. After the adjustment cold starts were perfect.
@moturcu42264 ай бұрын
@@geeksonbikes Thanks mate.
@rvator72913 ай бұрын
The valves get tighter because they are working their way into cylinder head. The danger is burning valves, not them hitting anything. Performance would slowly deteriorate. Many engines level off after one or two adjustments.

Hi really cool video, have you watched videos from another You Tuber known as "Itchy Boots" a Dutch Lady Biker named Noraly Schumacher who's been biking pretty much around the world? You should watch her Season 3 videos where she did her camping until it got to cold she went the airbnb route, she stated that it would be her 1st & last time she'll be camping. I had a pretty bad accident & now disabled, so i just enjoy watching videos like yours & Itchy Boots.

@geeksonbikes Well, you don't have to start out big. You guys are based in FL, start with the Appalachian Mountain Range! Just don't make a "Wrong Turn!" If you catch my drift...! 😉😉😉I Oh BTW, I stumbled upon another YT Channel titled "Off She Goes" a Norwegian Lady who started you tube about a year ago, she started out locally exploring Scandinavia, Norway, Sweden & Denmark. For some reason she skipped Finland, Itchy Boots was denied entry into Finland during her Season 3 videos! So ya, like Off She Goes started locally in Scandinavia. You can start out in the South, beginning with the Appalachian Mountain Range.

Good job. I had a similar desire some years ago....found a switch device call "Auto Switch"....which is called a "parasitic" controller. You wire it to your garage remote controller and to some existing switch on your motorbike (like the high beam or aux light switch). The Auto Switch monitors voltage on the bike's switch...and after a few seconds it will then trigger the remote controller to transmit only if the bike's switch is shut off again within a few seconds. So you don't have the remote transmitting when you actually turn your highbeam on for regular use, etc. Worked flawlessly for many years on my bikes. No dedicated switch on the bike is needed. The remote controller can be hidden under your bike seat or in the headlight shell, etc, safely out of sight from pilferage or water spray etc. I'm thinking to get another one for my car soon....

Please check with your bike shop manual that your handlebar clamps are not inverted. Dots usually indicate "front" and sometimes also indicate that those bolts should be tightened first, then the back bolts tightened to "clamp". That's how Honda do it anyway. I used a remote to open the gate just like you, but I found that random local people locking their cars had the effect of opening my gate😮, and as we have dogs, had to ditch that idea🙁

My wife is height-challenged at 5'. Been thinking of one of these bikes and lowering it for her like y'all did. She likes the option of the DCT available. How tall do you think one should be to flat foot (or not a solid tippy toe) once it's lowered?
@geeksonbikes6 ай бұрын
So sorry about the late response! Zhen is 5'2" and her heels still don't touch the ground but they are WAY closer than before. I'm guessing lowering it a 5'4" person would get heels on the ground. I think the problem with height challenged people is the the seat is pretty wide on that bike. Does your wife currently ride? How is her slow speed maneuvers?

Thank you for the video, I just finished my valve adjustment on 390ADV. I got pretty same clearances as you: Intake 0.09 0.07 and exhaust 0.13 0.13, so all four are out of specs. I guess they don't check anything at the factory, moreover, motor is the same on Duke, but clearances are tighter, I guess they put same shims for Duke and Adv.
