You could have run the sides of the slide on a belt sander to smooth out the rust pits before bluing it. The same goes for the frame.

この方法でヘッドライトをきれいにするのが一番だと思いますね、ハロゲンバルブの熱で内側が変色し、外側は自然環境の影響で変質したのですから、両側をきれいにして再度組み立てて、コーティング剤を塗布すれば一番見違えると思いますが、中を磨くためにから割をしているので組立てをした際に水などが入らなければいいですね。（どれくらい自然環境に晒されて持つのか解らないけれど）
