My father was the toughest man I knew. He was a grunt in 1971 in Vietnam. Lived in bush. It had to mess him up mentally. He never talked about it. I guess he was tough cause he had already been to HELL.

I see a red door And I want it painted black No colors anymore I want them to turn black I see the girls walk by Dressed in their summer clothes I have to turn my head Until my darkness goes I see a line of cars And they're all painted black With flowers and my love Both never to come back I've seen people turn their heads And quickly look away Like a newborn baby It just happens everyday I look inside myself And see my heart is black I see my red door I must have it painted black Maybe then, I'll fade away And not have to face the facts It's not easy facing up When your whole world is black No more will my green sea Go turn a deeper blue I could not foresee this thing Happening to you If I look hard enough Into the setting sun My love will laugh with me Before the morning comes I see a red door And I want it painted black No colors anymore I want them to turn black I see the girls walk by Dressed in their summer clothes I have to turn my head Until my darkness goes I wanna see it painted Painted black Black as night Black as coal I wanna see the sun Blotted out from the sky I wanna see it painted, painted, painted Painted black, yeah

All that U.S. firepower and hardware and millions of Vietnamese military and civilian casualties and the Vietnamese nationalist-revolutionary forces refused to yield, refused to stop fighting. Now that's an iron-willed people for you!

Seen from today's perspective, the USA has fought and lost against a nationalist and undemocratic opponent. Ultimately, nothing else stands for what Trump stands for today.

It’s weird that these songs, like Fortunate son somehow give off a cool vibe about war, about the boys armed to the teeth campaigning in the jungle in commandos and on aerial operations in a swarm of low flying choppers during aerial ops, guns blazing, raining napalm from fighter jets. It’s definitely odd. I think some of these songs and how they got culturally embedded became more than they wanted to. Maybe what contributed to this aspect is the fact that the soldiers themselves in the little downtime they had at camp and had to pump themselves up before battle operations. It was about raising the spirit. And in short videos we get the wrong idea. All in all who doesn’t know that Nam was more horrendous.
