Thanks for the TASCAM 38 love! Mine recently died and could not be repaired. Luckily I transferred all my analog recordings to digital and I’m uploading them to my KZfaq channel so people can hear how awesome half inch tape and a TASCAM 38 sounds.

Incomplete video. You have missed showing removal of front plate which will reveal a screw on the right side of the mechanism screwed in from the front to hold the mechanisim from its front side which must be unscrewed after removing the front plate. This mechanism is NOT designed to be easily user serviceable by pioneer.

Hi. I have one of these machines. Looked after well and greatly enjoy playing it. However one of the input nobs is really turning more loosely and sounds crackly and scratchy when using to adjust recording. Any advise on how I could remedy this.

Excellent video! Is this capacitively coupled plasma? Also, would you consider releasing a full materials list?

Hi! Thanks! I don’t think is CCP, since is DC plasma, not RF. If I find the time I would love to do a followup of this video (I’ve just upgraded the secondary pump to a turbo pump). In that I will add a materials list too.

.. This is why they put inserts on mixing desks or just record on computer and send audio onto tape there is no magic sound on the Tascam pre amps. Things get interesting if you record smpte on to one track from reaper daw and then sync reaper from your A-3440 so reaper plays or records when you start the A-3440

I have a 2213 fully functional. But I couldn't remove the power supply shield, the rear screws T7 didn't come, I would have to drill the head and replace them afterwards. Cheers.

I also changed the two pin mains input to three pin and connected chassis to mains earth, also changed the mains protection rifa cap at the mains connector, if this cap fails the chassis can become mains live, also changed the three motor control capacitors, the three big aluminium caps behind the mains panel.

hello, I have a B780 which was completely overhauled in 2016, and which works wonderfully. For a month now when I turn it on it works perfectly for 35 to 40 minutes then a fuse blows and the sound is full of distortion. I turn it off letting it cool and I can listen to it normally again for 35 minutes until the fuse blows again! what do you think could be condensation or another cause of the problem??? thank you in advance

Hi sorry for the late response. It could be a bad capacitor that is turning into a resistor, thus heating up and then shorting a part of the circuit, but I suspect there’s something else in your machine. These amps are exceptionally well constructed, but the board assembly, although very easily serviceable, means that you’ll have a ton of contacts that with time can oxidise and not make good connections anymore. They sometimes can move a little and short something too. On the unit I had there were a lot of contact problems due to bad storage conditions. In your case it seems that a component or some contact between boards or components may heat up and then short something somewhere. I would reseat all the connectors and boards and test the unit taking measurements of temperature around (even better with a thermal camera). Hope it helps!

You left one exploding capacitor right near the power plug in-line with the mains. I mention it because it just failed on mine.

I hate when people say you can't master a song on 7 1/2 ips. You can! And it sounds amazing when the machine is calibrated tho. It may sound different to a 15 ips machine, but the B77 is super good machine. Even A77 can handle that quality imho.

Thanks for this video! I have a Tascam 48 OB and channels 3 and 5 went out randomly and am pretty sure it is due to having to move or “scoot” the unit over while recording one day. Luckily i also have a parts unit that I can swap a card or two out with... thanks again, it was helpful. Cheers from USA!

I have a quick question, when using the bypass resistor instead of speakers, does hooking the DI Box add additional impedance? It seems that the resistor and the DI box together would have their own impedance.
@DaveElectronics
@DaveElectronics 6 ай бұрын
Hi, yes it does! But being the DI a high impedance device (much higher than the bypass resistor), its contribute is negligible.

I guess you found the other 3 Rifa caps and replaced those too? 1 is behind the iec power connector, 2 others on a small pcb behind the reel speed switch…. I found out about these when the one at the power went up in a massive cloud of smoke :(

@@dubdoodle7191 no not crazy at all I saw a video of a guy who drilled a hole someplace in the unit where he could reach the screw that adjusted the azimuth of the tape head so he could put a screwdriver in there and very easily turn and adjust it based on the tape he was working with. But I am depressed about is the fact that there are no new companies making reasonably priced real to reels there are a few companies making them but they want ridiculous sums like $20,000 which is absolutely ridiculous.

Strange that the meters change position when you turn at the output knob , I've never seen that before , I mean where is the reference . Normally only the volume changes when it's connected to the amplifier and the meter output in the display stays the same . Also strange that no-one below comments on that

I'm currently checking out and auction for one of these machines, I'd like to get a multitracking deck to work with, as I do already have two pretty nice quarter track stereo decks (AKAI GX-600DB and Sony TC-630). Love doing all sorts of experimental sonic stuff with them. Excellent video as well!

This is an excellent machine, very good and sophisticated mechanically and electronically, I have been very attentive to the entire repair and you have done a wonderful job, now, about TASCAM, why in 1/2" does this brand use a pulley to drive the steering wheel? I cannot understand this, the belts are good in the sense that they transmit less vibrations to the shaft and the tape, but it is a totally unnecessary added factory problem when the correct thing is to mount the shaft in the same motor and you eliminate parts and risks of disasters. Very good video.

Hey, sounds great, but the genre and style of music does not suit the A-3440 ! I had one of these in 1978 when they first appeared and music was far less raunchy. it would be nice to hear it in the style of the day. Great though.
