I'm far out. I suspect Parker [ not sure about others dogs] can read. Iirc. A few months back Parker uses another dog's board, to press a context appropriate button. This button iirc , was newly added to the other dog's board. And parker hadn't seen it on that dog's board before. Again I might be misremembering. The video ends with the other dog's parent asking something like, ' can she [Parker ] read'. And then laughter

It was such a pleasure seeking Parker and you in the Netflix dog documentary. I was so excited to share the recommendation with many friends and family... and told them they would recognize at least a couple "participants" - as they are amused when I send them various shorts clips of Parker and the other "talking pets" I follow.

So cool, my dog doesn’t have buttons, but he gives me his paw and stares into my eyes when when he wants something. If it’s noisy when we’re out or if someone is a bit loud and erratic, I know he wants to leave, as he was badly abused before I adopted him 2yrs ago. She pressed the first one while I was behind her so I’m not sure how that would work. If you watch a lot of my vids you’ll see my back is to her or I’m not focused on her in a lot of them when she starts pressing. Sure there are some people who cue their animals to do this but it’s typically for entertainment not evidence of genuine communication and tellingly they’re always offscreen with the dog facing the camera.

It’s wild to me that you could think dogs don’t understand words at this point. How many people have had to spell out words in front of their dogs before! Also action response - you mean she presses a button and we do the thing that word says? That’s… how communication and meaning works?

@@puppyparkerposey If I provided evidence, /honestly/ would you even bother looking at it? I can prove my position. In short, it's basically operant conditioning combined with body language. You could even consider it 'Clever Hans' in the age of electronics and internet. Skeptoid does a great analysis of animal communication through sign language with apes - that are smarter than dogs - and they fail miserably. I would be very interested if a dog could explain exactly which plant it was about to pee on and why.

@@puppyparkerposey Watch your own video. Pay attention to the cues your dog is following. Notice how intently s/he is paying attention to your /body/ language. I'm not saying it doesn't understand key words in a sentence, but I really think you could consider what your own /behavior/ is communicating to your dog. How you stand, where you stand, the speed and tone of your voice, your eyes, your smile, your arms - the dog reads it all.

I don’t mean to hate, but I have a hard time believing these button videos, or at least the ones where the dog pushes the buttons to say “Dream bad.” The buttons are a form of operant conditioning, where the dog will expect a certain reward for pushing a certain button. I could totally get behind them pushing a single button for like “potty” or “treat” because dogs already do this without the buttons. The part that I just don’t believe is them stringing these words together.
@puppyparkerposey

@@wrandy593very mature. Just for the record Newsweek does this click bait and has also published a number of stories about dogs using buttons positively. Neither of the scholars interviewed for the article do research with dogs and the buttons and, as I’m sure you know, Newsweek is not an academic publication either. The researchers at ucsd who are studying these dogs have a number of publications in the pipeline. You’re not wrong that there is no published research demonstrating that this is “real” but there also isn’t any that demonstrates that it isn’t. As for bias, of course what you see on social media is a selection but the researchers have all the data not just videos posted and the idea that scholars who haven’t actually done anything but watched these videos aren’t impacted by their own biases is naive.
