My best lessons have been my mistakes. Keep at it. I always put “cookies” under my mugs that are thick and smaller than the mug bottom. The drips will not reach under it to melt into the cookie…then you can always grind the drip away from your mug. Hope I made sense!

I test all my mugs after firing by putting hot water in them. If the clay isn't fired to the required temperature to vitrify it, it will weep and you will get moisture under the mug. All clays have a certain temp for vitrification so you have to look at that when you buy it. Also, for dinnerware I look for clay that has an absorbtion rate <2%. A lot of clays will absorb water up to 20%. I accidently bought cone 9 clay when my studio only fire to cone 6. All my mugs were weeping it really sucked. I didn't have any cone 9 glazes nor a place to fire that hot. Now I am very careful about what clay I buy. Nice pieces!

Hi Suza, I consider myself new at pottery too ( 3+ years now). I know how you feel when things come out of the kiln wrong. There is SO MUCH to learn. I have started to read the labels of the glazes to try and figure if they run or not. That help me a little... but now I and trying to write down what my experience have been with the different glazes. Even though I do not like an unglazed line on the bottom. I have been leaving (about half centimeter) clear at the bottom. Applying wax resist before ( on the area you want to keep clear) helps to keep it clear from glaze and helps keeping the glaze from running too. I love the work you are doing, you are very creative.

Hey! So glad to see you again. I’m so sorry the baking dish warped so much. Please remember that clay has memory. So if you bend it and flatten it out again it will remember the way you bent it and it will bend back that way. Also when you dry handbuilt pieces that are flat you need to put weights on the flat part until it’s completely dry. You can fill socks with kitty litter or sand and use them as weights. I love your pieces you’re doing great with all the glaze combinations. And yes when using kiln stilts it will make the clay sag in the areas where it’s not supported. The leaking is as people have said. Be sure to use witness cones on each shelf if you can to make sure the kiln is getting hot enough. Also be very very careful refiring pots that have had liquid in them and leaked like that because the clay is now wet and could explode. Make sure you let pieces like that dry reallllly well before firing again. For the mugs that you want the lettering on maybe you could put the writing on a round piece of clay and put the writing on it then apply that to the side of the mug. Then it will be raised and you don’t have to put any glaze on it just the mug and it won’t run? If you have any questions please let me know and I’ll try and help explain better. Loving the mugs. Even if they aren’t round. They are hand made. I love how you put the glaze combos on the screen! It’s so helpful to take a screen shot. Great kiln load!!

Your glaze technique is really great, glazing is (to me) the hardest thing to learn. The mug that leaked coffee, the inside of the mug looked like it had texture, not very smooth glass like finish. This could be because not fired at full temp or the glaze may not be completely compatible with the clay? Either way it could harbor bacteria in the texture so may not be 100% food safe. Also, the mug not being completely round, could that be the metal kiln stands? Or, some clay has a deep memory, like porcelain, so if it was out of round while drying it could revert to that shape during firing even if you fixed it before completely dry/bisque. Hope that made sense. You are doing really good, your pieces are so gorgeous .

Dear Erika, I am so happy that you are around to give me such good advices. Never thought, that the metal stands could have an impact. I used them the first time. Will keep on trying to find out. When a mug is not completely food safe can I use it anyways? I’m not so sensitive. Or is it really dangerous ? I hope I can count on you and your knowledge also in the future. That helps me a lot. Great unload Suza! With your cup that is leaking the problem is that your clay isn’t vitrified. Liquid will leak through glaze if clay has not been fired to a high enough temperature. My favourite piece is that nimbus mug even though it ran. I’ve got to give nimbus another try 😊

I think GLAZING is the most difficult part of the process ... and I've been making pottery for 30 years! This kiln opening reminds me so much of my early ceramic days. A couple of suggestions, even though you use cookies, you can still put kiln wash on the cookie. Also, while you're learning about glazes, you could leave the lower part of your vertical pieces (mugs) without glaze and do an oxide wash. Inscribe a pattern into the raw clay and put glaze only on the top 3/4 of the mug. Brush on an oxide wash on the lower part and gently wipe it off, leaving oxides in the inscribed area. Red iron oxide is easy to find. DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED! This is all part of the process of learning! Best of luck!
