Mike, you can find out for sure if that msg is spyware, by changing the Windows theme. if that message still has the same colors as before, the system has spyware. They were too lazy and/or stupid to change their bogus message colors to match whatever theme you were using. They kept it at default.

Great diagnostic. Learned a few things! I really liked you use of Linux to have a deeper look at the system.

I remember the XT with the green Hercules monitor... my mom would type faster than it could process. (10 MB, oh yes, the vast amount of space we had available)

Hey, I remember those purple buttons. But my case the swoops down the sides were painted silver. I remember that the reset button on it was a PITA to push and liked to stick, necessitating the use of graphite, which was marginally effective.

That Pentium iii 700 with the 100MHz FSB is very hard to come by... I have a dead 850 and a 650... Been on the hunt for a faster one for my Intel Dot Station (i810 - FSB 66/100 only)

I have the exact same lite on dvd burner that's on the first system. That thing is bulletproof. It belonged to my stepdad who bought it for his rig in 05 ane used it for almost 10 years. I've been using it to burn audio CDs almost daily for 3 years now, et even has a direct drive tray, and a red LED for when it's burning data. Besides the rubber on the platter clamp wearing off from so much use, i never had any issue with that drive.

The only thing those Toshiba XM series CD-ROM drives deserve is a hammer. The tray loader gears on those are absolute garbage.

See, and here I thought percussive maintenance was only for old MFM hard drives. Guess it's time to add optical drives to the list.

That Toshiba CD-ROM drive has more plastic than my Cyberdrive of roughly the same vintage (and that's something, since the Toshiba must have been much more expensive). Btw, I moved in the summer of 2022 and in April of this year. Still don't know where some of my things went, including a Yamaha SCSI CD-RW drive, which I'd really like to use for my dual slot 1 workstation build.
