This looks a little more challenging than the previous route which I really enjoyed, so must give it a go sometime.
@whereisgibsonАй бұрын
I'd say Section 1 was harder before, the new route didn't have any committed climbs. It could also do with being condensed a little more. I'd be inclined to merge old Section 1 and 2 into new Section 3+.

Really enjoyed this Martin. I did the ACT Portugal in September last year, stunning country to ride through. There certainly seems to be a few sections which are tougher on the TET! Can I ask what's the device you're using below your Garmin? Thanks 👍🏻
@whereisgibson2 ай бұрын
Thanks! I'm using a Ulefone 18T running DMD2, with an ARN Rally Box and F2R controller. 15W wireless charging, and big battery which can double as a powerbank so perfect for multiday camping, has a thermal camera and boroscope for mechanical work, and is very rugged. But not great in the rain (you can see it failing at 20:10) so I would not have it as my only device. Garmin Tread also fails (crashes) but the hope is both don't fail at the same time 😄 The Tread also integrated better with the inreach which is how we messaged between the devices, both as we sometimes had no signal, but also a phone might be in a pocket or out of battery etc.
@darrenoconnor34022 ай бұрын
Thanks for replying Martin. Great detail! That's a pain that it failed! Did it come back to life at all? I used an old Samsung Note 9 running DMD2 and Locus Maps for my Portugal trip. It ran well, but the weather for my trip was amazing, so no idea how it would have faired in the rain. My issue was bright sunlight. The Samsung wouldn't have the NITS level of a Garmin, and the Carpe Iter is a hefty price tag...so I've been trying to find an Android device with a higher NIT level that could handle a beating.
@whereisgibson2 ай бұрын
The 18T is only about 400 whereas the Tread is 800 iirc. It's not such a problem as you can cast a shadow over it using your helmet, but, I believe Thork Racing now offer high NIT devices. I'll personally wait a few years as they seem to be n-2 generation devices, whereas the 18T is a good 5G phone outright other than the brightness. Edit: both came back to life, Garmin wants a restart or sometimes a resync to a phone, the phone needs the screen wiped dry or locked until it stops heavily raining.
@darrenoconnor34022 ай бұрын
@@whereisgibson Yeah the Thork Racing seems to be the pinnacle of Android based devices. Last year I did quite a bit of digging on their new Nav Phone, the DMD-T665. Turns out that very device is commonly used by couriers or the likes of Just Eat delivery drivers, sold under a different model name...but I could only find business to business sales for multiple units. Shame. Thanks for all the info Martin, all the best 👍🏻

@whereisgibson6 ай бұрын
It's provided for the week yes, a Stella 3 Evo, though you need to own the mounting kit. Great system, it knows where you are so the organisers do too, helps make safe overtakes, and warns for the risky bits.

what is that bag you got on the tank? Did you piece that together yourself?
@whereisgibson8 ай бұрын
Yes, using molle straps and pouches from Amazon. On this trip they held the tank pouch, and on the side a first aid kit and 1L 2t oil. Works very well, and as a bonus cheap, and can be customised to whatever is needed.

Coming off your bike is scary. Asking a mate if they're ok and hearing a No, takes your heart to the pit of your stomach very very swiftly.
@whereisgibson8 ай бұрын
Agreed. Thankfully it was just a scare, and, ATGATT. I almost did this trip wearing less protective gear, which, had I done so would have been a trip to A&E. Instead we were in the pub an hour later having lunch. The impact put a crack through a carbon lid and took a chunk out of my goggles.

Have you do something on this bike, so it runs so smooth in the lower rpm, mine just need more rpm, to run powerful. My plan is to change the carburator to a Fcr 39 and put the older non Hiflo Head on.
@whereisgibson9 ай бұрын
Stock BST40 with HiFlo head. The plastics in the carb do wear out, I've completely rebuilt it a few times with new slides etc. I've considered a pumper carb, but a CV carb is much better at dealing with altitude changes, which happens daily on these trips...

I currently have a 990 adv and am looking for a 640 because its more basic than the 990 carb kick start etc has it been a good reliable bike? Can you still get parts easy for the 640? All the best Carl
@whereisgibson9 ай бұрын
Thanks! The 640 is a tough bike, though they are known for bearings exploding around the 100000km mark, as did mine. I was lucky and got a brand new engine. But I've retired it from active use as I can't get the parts new any more. It will be my choice for long distance gentle offroad and classic rally. I have a 2020 EXC as my primary bike as parts are cheap and easily available.
