Coppola couldve been that guy to leave Hollywood after an amazing movie in The Godfather and be a "where are they now?" kinda guy but dude is a real one and would rather take the rocky trail of show biz and take the risks to accomplish great works of art. He got those traits from his dad no doubt.

"Peggy Sue" achieved the only true acclaim and mainstream success of that very dark decade for him....and it was because he was at his lowest point at that moment in time, forcing him into a previously unbeknowst modesty of status, power, and position. Ironically enough, the film's acclaim at that time in 1986 rested on the performances exclusively, (sans his nephew Mr. Cage) rather than Coppola's grand directorial legacy and name-above-the-title superstardom. And even more ironically, it immediately restored that tarnished legacy and briefly restored that vaunted status through him being critically percieved as a humbled and newly reborn "actor's director" rather than a magnum opus fabulist of massive and epic "grand visions", the very thing that just killed "Megalopolis" and that vaunted legacy all over again.

@@vinylncelluloidRe: "Megalopolis" Consesus reviews so far amount to basically a terrible and even embarrassing failure, where the performances are shockingly bad and all over the place, where the ambition to make a final epic masterpiece and swan song sinks in the wake of an utterly spent and throughly disconnected filmmaker. Vanity Fair and The Guardian went so far as to call it an unmitigated disaster.

Me & my friends saw 1941 in the theater when it came out and thought it was hilarious. We were 12. I saw it again with one of those friends. Dad got it on tape when it came out, watched it over & over again. Not as much as JAWS, but a lot. It’s a comedy classic, almost as good as It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Mars Attacks, on the other hand, sucked. Tim Burton is overrated as hell. And the so-called “stars” mostly sucked. It wasn’t campy, at all. That’s why it bombed.

I assume you’re going to make more videos on how other 70s auteurs have survived the 80s? Because I’ve heard people say that the 80s were the worst decade in the history of American cinema and it’s a fascinating story on how the decade in cinema turned out to be.

@@patrickshields5251 I think there's a lot of unfairness when talking about the 1980s overall. Plenty of great titles made during this decade and certainly a lot of innovation with the explosion of sequels and blockbusters.

@@vinylncelluloid The reason why I asked is because I gotten into a debate with a Siskel and Ebert fanboy who can’t seem to get over his bias of the 80s. He goes by the name Flaccidus Minimus. He’s one of those bad faith dicks who claims to acknowledge that film criticism is subjective, yet acts like we should always see things from his perspective. That’s both pretentious and disingenuous.

thanks for these reviews. I am a lot older than the gentleman above, but I was fortunate to see both films in the theater. I remember the ending sequence of French Connection 2 was heart pounding. I had seen both French Connection and Chinatown in the theater when they came out. TWO JAKES for me suffered somewhat from the 1974 to 1990 16 yrs difference. I did not get all what was implied, until I saw both on DVD many years later, and after seeing both Chinatown and the Two Jakes in the same day. One problem I thought with the TWO JAKES, while reallly a good film, is that it is to CHINATOWN, what 2010 is to 2001. Space Oddesy. Also back in 75 or 74, I had heard that Dustin Hoffman was thought to be in the sequel, so a sequel even bakc tehn was thought of becuase of Robert Towne. Also I had heard that a 3rd Jake movie was supposed to happen, in the 1960's, regarding more freeways, the first water, the second oil, but because of the failure of TWO JAKES, never happened. But who knows, with AI, maybe such a film like that can be done. Also find it quite funny, but in FRENCH CONNECTION 2, Gene Hackman basically gives the same performance that he did it FRENCH CONNECTION, but no academy award nomination. And he is really good in the second film.
@vinylncelluloid
@vinylncelluloid Ай бұрын
Appreciate the support! Agreed with 2001/2010 comparison. Gittes vs. Gittes, the 3rd entry in the Chinatown universe almost happened. I believe had the sequel been greenlit in the 1980s and a success we would have seen it. French Connection II is truly underrated

I disagree with your take on the ending, especially with your dislike of the unclimactic deaths. The film was pushing a live television aesthetic, so naturally when shit hits the fan people will die quickly and shockingly. I felt that the film used the deaths as interesting callbacks to the characters (the para-psychologist who talks out the devil gets her throat cut, the side-kick whose head wasn't on straight gets his turned around, and the skeptic who fakes pyromancy gets burned alive). Anyway just my opinion, keep up the reviews dawg
