Age of the earth is a deep question. Old earth requires evolution which carries with it death before the fall of Adam and the curse of death didn't come till Genesis 3. The Creation was a miracle of the same sort Jesus demonstrated throughout his ministry on Earth. So there's a biblical authority issue here because the New Testament states that Adam was the cause of sin! It doesn't get much deeper than that! Jesus' miracles which required creative actions were mostly instantaneous so we can assume there was no necessity for a history before Day 1 and every time the Bible says the evening and the morning was... it was 24 hours.

Lately I've been reading both the Psalms and Dante's Inferno. The fear of God in the Psalms is like an antidote for rage. I will give you one point. If you want to say some long period of time passed between Genesis 1.1 and 1.3, I'll grant you that but do tell me - what events occurred during that time? Other than " the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters," nothing happened. No stars were formed. No mountains arose. Nothing lived. Six days later - day is defined in verse 5 - Man was created. One hundred thirty years later that man fathered a son named Seth and that first man lived a total of 930 years. When Adam the first man died, the Earth was less than 1,000 years old - according to God's Holy Spirit who inspired Moses to write.

The point of contention that is being missed in this discussion is how this topic affects the gospel. If as a Christian you believe the earth is naturally 4.5 billion years old then it implies death pain and suffering came before Adam sinned which is in direct contradiction with Rom. 5:12. Jesus, Paul, and Peter refer to Genesis in a historical narrative context. Genesis has to be understood in a historical narrative context, if not then Adam never truly sinned, therefore a Savior is not necessary. This is what was missed by John Lennox.

A big sticking point though, is that Young Earth Creationists are also counting on the relatively short age of the earth (thousands or years vs billions) because it puts a serious death blow to evolution, which depends on billions of years to "work". I personally am skeptical of "full on evolution" and especially naturalism (which is self defeating). But I also cannot go all in on the young earth discussions. There definitely was a beginning as professor Lennox says.
