Dr. HARMON who I saw at UAB NEUROSURGERY for Cervical Spinal problems, apparently, only seems to care about patients with Extremely Critical Situational Conditions! DISCOUNTING the other Multiple PAINFUL and Debilitating conditions in my Cervical Spine, there is one area at my C2 Level Vertebrae that concerns me Overall. Dr. HARMON after examining my situation refused to do a procedure to remove a bone spur at my C2 Vertebrae which is Obviously, (MRI), pressing into the Spinal Canal Sheathing Fluid, which IS CAUSING EXTREME THINNING of the fluid next to my Spinal Canal. His excuse is, he doesn't feel ANY Surgery would help relieve ANY of the MULTIPLE PAINFUL conditions I am SUFFERING from related to my Cervical Vertebrae. However, my greatest concern, was and is, this C2 Bone Spur problem. He said to me concerning this problem that, "IT'S NOT CRITICAL ENOUGH, YET" to warrant surgery!!! Well, My honest opinion is, why wait until it gets Critical!!! It's called PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE! AT LEAST by Removing the Bone Spur the Spinal Fluid would be returned to a more Thickened and Normal state. It probably would have taken less than thirty minutes to an hour of surgery to debride the bone spur!! Here is were it gets really interesting. I did not pick Dr. HARMON myself just out of the blue, nor did I make the appointment to see him. THREE OTHER DOCTORS recommended I have Cervical Surgery and two recommended I go to UAB and get SURGERY there. One is an Emergency Room Doctor who upon examining a MRI of me informed me I had a serious problem in my Cervical Spine and recommended I go see a Specialist doctor at THE ANDREWS INSTITUTE, which is a well known PREMIER ORTHOPEDIC SPORTS MEDICINE CLINIC in my area. They Mainly treat Only PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES from All Professional Sports, from all over the USA! I went to THE ANDREWS INSTITUTE and the Doctor I saw there said I needed to go to UAB because he felt my condition warranted BETTER SURGICAL METHODS than what they were capable of!!! Wow, imagine my Surprise and new ANXIETY after that visit!!! I then had ANOTHER MRI done by my PRIMARY Doctor who had to have one done AGAIN and reviewed, in order that he could justify a referral to UAB. After he reviewed this new MRI, he too informed me that I was approved by the Clinic he practices at and they also approved what the other doctors recommended that I indeed needed to go to a Clinic such as UAB for Cervical Surgery! ALL THREE of these Doctors felt I needed to go to UAB because in thier PROFESSIONAL opinions UAB offers the Best Technologically ADVANCED Surgical Instrumentation (robotics, etc.), and the Best Surgically ADVANCED "Superior" METHODS more than any of what the doctors or clinics in my area of living can offer!! SO, an appointment was made FOR me at UAB NEUROSURGERY and I went to UAB! I had to spend money on a HOTEL (9am appointment), GAS, FOOD and other TRAVEL EXPENSES! Now, Imagine my Surprise and Shock when at my appointment at UAB with Dr. HARMON he tells me my condition is not Serious Enough to warrant ANY Surgery!!! This is TOTALLY OPPOSITE of what THREE previous Doctors Recommended after examining me and Reviewing the MRI's and informing me I NEEDED CERVICAL SURGERY!!!! Sometimes it is clear to me at the moment what it concerns and sometimes I find out later what it was about. Those feelings and thoughts right now are Extremely Heavy about this WHOLE EXPERIENCE with Dr. HARMON and UAB, and these thoughts and feelings RIGHT NOW are what I call, 100% BAD VIBES!!!!!!! GOD IS NEVER WRONG!!!

Dr. Harmon who I saw only seems to care about extremely critical situations and refused to do a SIMPLE procedure to remove a bone spure on my C2 Vertebrae which was Obviously (MRI) pressing on spinal fluid CAUSING EXTREME Thinning of fluid next to Spinal Canal. His excuse was he didn't feel it would help relieve my pain. Yet he said also IT WASN'T CRITICAL ENOUGH, YET!!! My honest opinion is why wait till it's gets critical!!! It's called PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE! AT LEAST by removing the spur the spinal fluid would then be returned to a more thickened state. It probably would have taken less than a thirty minute surgery!! THREE DOCTORS recommended I go to UAB and one worked at The Andrews Institute which is a Premier Sports Surgery Clinic near me. These Doctors felt I needed UAB because in thier opinion UAB offered more Technologically Advanced Instruments and Surgically superior METHODS! SO, I went to UAB! SPENT TIME, TRAVEL MONEY, HOTEL, GAS ETC., only to be told that my condition wasn't Serious enough to warrant surgery in Dr. Harmon's OPINION !!! Totally Opposite of what THREE previous Doctors observed from the MRI and Surgically recommended. My visit to UAB NEUROSURGERY was a Total waste of time and a Major Disappointment! DR. HARMON could have just called me on the phone and discussed his Opinion if my condition was was so Unimportant, and not as Critical as HE NEEDED to justify HIS REQUIREMENTS for surgery! My GUT Feeling after experiencing this is I am also experiencing AGE DISCRIMINATION because I am 67 ! He said several times, well, "IF YOU WERE YOUNGER" it might me something he would do !!!!!!! Also, my gut feeling is there is more to this, like maybe he has huge work load and only wants to take care of the Most Critical cases he sees! Any one who looks at the MRI will SEE exactly what I am talking about. Even a child!!! I don't feel this Surgery would have taken long to remedy smoothing out the bone spur causing the problem and at least this spur pressing on the spinal fluid would BE GONE, allowing the fluid sheathing to returned to a more thicker normal state around the spinal canal. It is pressing so much near the canal that the space near the canal and the fluid is a HAIR or less in width!!!!! Yeah, let's just wait till it actually gets critical and gets into the canal!!!! WHAT KIND OF PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE IS THIS ???? There must me more to this like MEDICAL POLITICS or something else ! Whatever his reasoning is, I do not know at this time, but I feel something is definitely not RIGHT! I think this is a pseudo disease and patients feel better after only because they are put on a calcium intake regimen after surgery. Basically you only get to take calcium after they give you surgery, that's why they never mention calcium intake. 11 calcium is at two standard deviations of normal levels, and obviously pth can vary over time to address calcium needs. 2.5 years after my parathyroidectomy. Had the doctor test pth and calcium and vitamin d levels just because I was told to add them anytime they do any blood tests at least once a year. Was not expecting anything unusual but Pth was high, vitamin d was low, calcium normal. Doctor prescribed vitamin d supplementation for 3 months to rule out secondary hpt. Seems like crazy bad luck to go from primary to secondary but at least that doesnt mean surgery again. So worried it is really back. Noticed so many symptoms returning before this result but I played them all off. I was cured! Have been feeling awful but didn't want to believe it could be true. My whole 20s were ruined by the disease because Doctors didn't look into why a young woman had kidney stones and extreme bone pain but eventually found the proof by accident . So scared it is back and of being made to jump through hoops just to get the treatment I need all over again.

Yes, very informative, thank you. I was just diagnosed with hyper parathyroidism, I had endometriosis ion my 30's and 40' (another endocrine issue..) I am now age 72. I was diagnosed with Autoimmune Hashimoto's' about 10 years ago and TOTALLY changed my diet and lifestyle. I have now gotten that condition under control (I even restructure my bone density by 6%.) and had was doing so well. Right now I feel like my body has betrayed me yet again. I am now realizing that my symptoms are fairly classic; exhaustion, bad sleep, frequent urination, heartburn/GERD) high calcium and high PTH. Fortunately, I don't have any mental health issues with this condition. I am currently in therapy for another reason and being in therapy allows me to vent as needed.

7 months ago, l suddenly started to lose weight… most of it muscle …I’m a 62 year old gym rat. Along with that came awful fatigue, constant peeing and muscle weakness. In 2 months, l lost 13 lbs. After seeing countless doctors, multiple tests and scans, it was determined l have normocalcimichyperparathyroidism. My calcium is normal, but PTH is high and have since found out i have osteoporosis. You are the first doctor to say that my weight loss and fatigue could be connected. You have given me hope. My surgery is next week. Fingers crossed this will help!

I had hyperparathyroidism in 2017 with a PTH level of 489 and it caused severe osteoporosis resulting in my right hip breaking. My bones never really recovered and my osteoporosis worsened after surgery.
